Illuminati, in general without going into great detail, has to do with the elite class that basically runs the world via secret societies. It originated in Europe and Weishaupt I believe is the founder(could be wrong) and like many other things made its way to the new world. It is difficult to summarize it because it deals with a lot of information. A lot pointing towards Freemasonry and their beliefs. Plenty of books to read on it.

So people believe that there are actually a hidden group of people that transcends the power of all the governments of the world? And further, that said group actually runs a shadow government that rules the world?

If there are powers so supreme such as illuminati, you wouldn't be able to do anything about it so why worry about it and why believe it?

This isn't a secret organization at all. Just another arm of the Catholic church. Nothing spooky or crazy at all about them.
