Mexican, Chinese drug dealers in cahoots?
23 January 2010, TUCSON: The unforgiving terrain of the Sonoran Desert, south of here, whose searing summers and frigid winters claim hundreds of lives each year, has long been a favored avenue of entry for illegal immigrants from Mexico and other Latin American countries. But in the last year, the authorities say, smugglers have increasingly capitalized on a much more lucrative business — trafficking Chinese citizens into the United States. Quote:

But why would all those Chinese risk their lives to flee their communist paradise? Gee, for some reason that doesn't add up...

The wacky title “China's new export: Illegal immigrants” brings back memories of the infamous African slave trade in the United States before the American Civil War. However, after reading the contents of the article, the readers would feel a sense of great disappointment because they could find no Chinese replica of the US slave trade.
They could find none of the “romantic” atmosphere and image of a bustling Chinese sea-port docked with a large fleet of ships loaded with millions of half-naked Chinese with hands and legs in heavy iron chains, waiting to be “exported” to all corners of the world, particularly to be “imported” like slaves by the United States. A suitable and accurate title for the article should be something like “Mexican Smugglers Trafficking Chinese Immigrants Into US”. The misleading title also reminds me of a joke. An Asian tourist in Europe passed by a shop which carried an advertisement on its signboard: “Best hotdogs in town”. He entered the shop and ordered his favourite food. When he was served with the food, he shouted angrily to the waiter: “The food is hot indeed, but I find no trace of dog at all!” The misleading title about Mexican human trafficking can be put together in the same category of these titles: 1. America's new export: Tibetan separatism (by supporting a lama) 2. America's new export: Xinjiang separatism (by harbouring an Uighur woman) 3. America's new export: continued division and rule in China (by arming Taiwan) 4. America's new export: civil war in Afghanistan 5. America's new export: human misery in Iraq 6. America's new export: Muslim misery and humiliation (by supporting Israel) 7. America's new export: continued division and rule in Korea 8. America's new export: continued slavery of Japan (with the US airbase in Okinawa) I also wish to point out the factors of “supply and demand” affecting human trafficking in the US. If there is no demand, then supply will lose much of its effect. Please read about “modern slavery” from an article headlined “Slavery in the United States” in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavery..._United_States (Begin excerpts) Although slave ownership by private individuals and businesses has been illegal in the United States since 1865, the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution specifically exempts the judiciary, permitting the enslavement of individuals "as a punishment for crime where of the party shall have been duly convicted". The United States Department of Labor occasionally prosecutes cases against people for false imprisonment and involuntary servitude. These cases often involve illegal immigrants who are forced to work as slaves in factories to pay off a debt claimed by the people who transported them into the United States. Other cases have involved domestic workers. There have been incidents of slavery amongst illegal immigrants working in agriculture. The Immokalee region in southern Florida, which grows most of the tomatoes eaten in the United States during the cold months, has had many cases of slavery. Since 1997, several prosecutions have resulted in over 1,000 slaves being freed. The New York Time, ABC News, and The San Francisco Chronicle, among others, have reported on child and teenage sexual slavery in the United States. There are also reports on children working in organized criminal businesses and in legitimate businesses under both humane and inhumane conditions. In 2002, the U.S. Department of State repeated an earlier CIA estimate that each year, about 50,000 women and children are brought against their will to the United States for sexual exploitation. Former Secretary of State Colin Powell said that "Here and abroad, the victims of trafficking toil under inhuman conditions -- in brothels, sweatshops, fields and even in private homes." (End excerpts) Finally, I wish to point out a worrying trend in US immigration as shown in the following article headlined “Indians Fastest-Growing Illegal Immigrant Group in US” in http://www.amren.com/mtnews/archives...ns_fastest.php Full text follows: (Begin text) Indians in the US are not only the fastest growing Asian community, but also have the dubious distinction of being fastest-growing According to the American Community Survey of the US Census Bureau, the Asian Indian population in the US grew from almost 1,679,000 in 2000 to 2,570,000 in 2007. With a growth rate of 53 percent the highest for any Asian American community, and among the fastest growing ethnic groups in the US, Indian Americans are the third largest Asian American ethnic group, after Chinese Americans and Filipinos. When it comes to illegal immigration, Hispanic illegal immigrants largely outnumber other undocumented immigrants. Mexicans make up nearly 7 million of the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants. The next largest group of Hispanics are Salvadorans and Guatemalans. But Indians are the fastest-growing group of illegal immigrants in the US, according to US Department of Homeland Security report. There are 270,000 unauthorised Indians in the US—a 125 percent jump since 2000, the largest percentage increase of any nation with more than 100,000 illegal immigrants. Many Indians get into the US with an H-1B Visa so they do not have to cross the border illegally. Indian illegal immigrants tend to have attained a higher level of education than other illegal immigrants in the US. In addition, many immigrants from India can speak English fluently. Immigrants from India often work for high-tech companies and perform highly skilled jobs such as engineering and computer programming. (End text) Some years in the future, the first Asian president in the US will most likely be an Indian (not the so-called “Indian” of the New Continent) as Indians from India are rather outspoken and vocal as well as immensely interested in politics. |

In modern China, local government officials (bear in mind, not the Central Government) have been alleged of colluding with unscrupulous slave trade operators in exploiting workers and underage labourers in brick kilns, coal mines and foundries.
Please read the article headlined “Slave trade: Chinese govt cracks the whip” in http://app.mfa.gov.sg/pr/read_content.asp?View,7509, However, even if we include slavery in feudal China (as happened in Europe, Japan, the Middle East and other countries in the feudal ages) all this is like comparing a mouse with an elephant when we compare it with the “global endeavour”, “global human tragedy”, “global inhumanity to man” and “involuntary Holocaust” (all quotes by Dr. Nantambu) committed by the US government and other governments in Europe after the discovery of the New World. Worst of all, the Roman Catholic Church under Pope Nicholas V was also involved in this unholy business. As pointed out by Dr. Nantambu, “it should be crystal clear that the order for the global apology for slavery is as follows: The Roman Catholic Pope of Rome, first; second, the governments of Spain and Portugal; in third place, come the governments of Britain, France and the Netherlands; in fourth and last place is the government of the United States.” Please read the article headlined “Question of Apology for Slavery: Global View” by Dr. Kwame Nantambu, an Associate Professor in the Dept. of Pan-African Studies at Kent State University, U.S.A. Here are excerpts from the article in http://www.trinicenter.com/kwame/20010615d.htm (Begin excerpts) When in June 1997, Rep. Tony Hall, a Dayton, Ohio Democrat, proposed a national apology by the U.S. government for slavery, mixed public response and/or reaction followed together with some skepticism as to the apology's real intent. For his part, President Clinton has not only put the slavery apology question under consideration but has also adamantly opposed any compensation/reparations for the descendants of those slaves, viz, African-Americans. Let's now put the institution of slavery in its proper historical context in order to get a more appropriate handle as to exactly who should apologize for this global inhumanity to man…… ………It was to overt the danger of fierce competition and possibly war between these two European global powers (Spain and Portugal) that Papal sanction was sought for a Portuguese monopoly. And so it was that on 8 January 1455, the Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Nicholas V, issued a Papal Bull titled Romanus Pontifex in which he authorized the Portuguese "to subject to servitude, all infidel peoples". In another Papal Bull, Inter Caetera issued on 13 March 1456, Pope Nicholas V "granted to Prince Henry, as Grand Master, of the Order of Christ in Portugal, all lands (and peoples) discovered or conquered form Cape Bojafor, in Africa, to and including the Indies." Moreover, on 25 September 1493, when Cristobal Colon (Christopher Columbus) set sail on his second voyage on behalf of the Spanish Crown, he took twelve missionaries along with him "to preach Christianity to the natives of the lands discovered" and by this tactic he assured that the conquered people would "make good Christians and good servants (slaves)". In 1515, Bartdomé de Las Casas, Roman Catholic Priest of Chiapas in Mexico, suggested to the Spanish Crown "the employment of a limited number of Negro slaves instead of Indians" in the Caribbean…… What this historical survey proves quite categorically is that although the two major European global powers, Spain and Portugal, were the first to engage in the enslavement of African people in the 15th century in collusion with the religious authority and sanctioning of the Pope of Rome, it was not until almost two hundred years later that other European nations such as Britain, France and the Dutch also got involved in this global endeavor….. Let us now answer the question as to who should apologize for slavery and whether compensation/reparations is a valid demand from the descendants of the enslaved Africans who were brought to the New World completely against their will. At the outset, it should be crystal clear that the order for the global apology for slavery is as follows: The Roman Catholic Pope of Rome, first; second, the governments of Spain and Portugal; in third place, come the governments of Britain, France and the Netherlands; in fourth and last place is the government of the United States. Now there is an already established "unprecedented act of repentance" for the Pope of Rome to take the lead in this global apology for slavery. In fact, in October 1997, the Roman Catholic Church of France, atoned and apologized for its silence and begged "forgiveness for Catholic inaction as regime sent Jews to their deaths in '40s". This public "act of contrition" was signed by Bishops in France. Ergo, Christians of African descent in all the countries aforementioned in Africa and the Caribbean/Latin America should demand through their Pastor or Bishop that Pope John Paul II issue an apology using the similar medium of a Papal Bull (now called an Encyclical Letter) for the Roman Catholic Church's involvement in the enslavement of their ancestors. As the world's sole super power, the United States should cajole the United Nations Security Council (consisting of five permanent members with veto power -- the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China) to pass a binding Resolution demanding that all the European governments who were involved in slavery should issue an apology for their respective government's involvement to the descendants of those victims -- for after all, the descendants of those victims are represented at the official level right next door in the General Assembly. The European Union should also pass a similar Resolution. These are the only acts to bring closure to this global human tragedy…… This brief survey clearly shows that every people who suffered or were subjected to a global calamity either received compensation or reparations, even including the British slave owners. How can anyone in his/her mind conclude that it is okay to pay compensation to the victimizer/oppressor but it is NOT okay and absurd to pay/compensate the victimized/oppressed/dehumanized/enslaved for their involuntary Holocaust? To suggest that race has nothing to do in this compensation payment question, only begs the question and smacks of ethnocentric, etnocentric and xenophic hypocrisy. As the world's sole super power, the United States should cajole the United Nations Security Council to pass a two-fold binding Resolution demanding that (i) all the European governments who were involved in slavery should immediately cancel the official external/foreign debt of all the aforementioned countries. If no such debt exists, then the respective European government(s) should donate a U.N. - determined amount of money as a free gift to these countries for the treatment and eradication of AIDS. And (ii) that the Euro-American controlled international financial institutions, such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank, should also immediately cancel the official external debt of these countries. The European Union should also pass a similar binding Resolution. These are the only concrete acts to bring closure to the question of reparations on a global scale…… (End excerpts) |

The following article replaces the same news story in the erroneous link from my previous post.
Please read the full text of the article headlined “Chinese man gets death for slavery scandal” in http://news.asiaone.com/News/AsiaOne...717-18692.html (Begin text) BEIJING, July 17 (Reuters) - China sentenced a man to death and jailed another 28 people for up to life on Tuesday for their roles in a massive slavery and child labour scandal involving scorching brickworks. The owners, managers and thugs at the prison-like kilns which state media said numbered in the hundreds in the northern province of Shanxi were convicted of charges including forced labour and illegal detention, an official said. Zhao Yanbing received the death penalty from the Linfen Intermediate People's Court for maiming, and leading to the death of, a worker at a kiln in Hongtong county, at the centre of the scandal. Heng Tinghan, who ran the kiln where 31 workers -- including nine with mental illnesses -- laboured 14-16 hours a day for little or no pay, was jailed for life, said Liu Jimin, deputy head of the Shanxi provincial high court. Chinese said in June that hundreds of farmers, teenagers and some children had been forced or lured to work in kilns like the one Zhao helped run as a thug, enduring prison-like confinement and brutal beatings. TV news showed released workers with emaciated bodies and festering wounds, and China's leaders promised to punish those involved. "The black brick kiln incident is an ugly social phenomenon and an ulcer on socialist China...we must get rid of it," Liu told a news conference in Shanxi's provincial capital Taiyuan which was broadcast live on state television. Shanxi authorities announced penalties against 95 low-level officials on Monday for lax supervision and dereliction of duty that allowed the brick kilns to exist. (End text) |
