Should hunting purely for sport be considered poaching?

There are many people in my state who hunt for sport, and do not intend to use the meat in any way. They usually throw the meat away and keep the antlers of deer, or the heads and other things as trophies.

I think this should be harshly punished. Hunters should be required to either use the meat themselves or donate it to a food charity.

by definition that is poaching. men with very small penises who want to feel like alpha males for a wee while. you hunt cause you need to, not cause it makes your dick feel bigger.

In my state, Dick Cheney and his hunting buddies would have been arrested as poachers for hunting froma car. It's poaching as well.

I think it's stupid and surely for the least masculine among us, but if the animal in question is abundant and shot in season I would not consider it poaching.

I think the opposite may be true, since poaching is a business to sell what they kill. I have absolutely no respect for people who hunt for sport only and leave animals. I think the term sleazebags applies to them better. also there are some in my area who only take best parts - that can be called poaching.

I live in a hunting community - Allegheney national forest - hunting from a truck is the normal for Americans. the standard. I have yet to see any of those hunters step out of their vehicles. they drive around looking for deer. FACT. I never hunted from a car myself.

It doesn't say much about the hunter that hunts to kill alone. Its wasteful to allow good meat to rot.

But---where I live we have Coyotes--and they are usually hidden not venturing out. Which is how I like it. In some areas they do come out and can be a pest and danger--not fearing humans. When my husband was a teen--he used to hunt coyotes and could get a bounty for each shot. They were considered a pest and the smart ones stayed away from humans.

So----is it better to have them protected and venturing around your children and city parks? Or does sport hunting become a benefit?

Killing coyotes to keep them out of your land is not hunting in my book, but I think it should only be allowed if they are already on your property. It should considered poaching if you are hunting them off of your own property without a permit.

That isn't poaching. Poaching involves trespassing on private property to hunt without permission.

    That's because you hate freedom.

In Indiana, it is illegal to hunt without using the meat. You either have to use it yourself or donate it to a food pantry. Selling game meat is illegal here as well, it is considered poaching as well.

Permit? Why a permit? People shouldn't be hunting on land that isn't theirs unless they have permission from the owners.

Over population, Varmit Control, etc.... make hunting a necessity and positive for nature and the environment. If we allowed the Canadian Geese to go unabated our water supplies would be literally crapped out.

If we allowed the Deer population to go unchecked the mass starvation of herds would pollute and ravish environments.

Wild Boars.... don't even get me started here. (I got treed by one once.)

I could go on, but I hope many of you get the idea.

When you hunt more rare, exotic animals that do not fall under these categories for sport, then there is an issue.

Yes, they also like to put bait around the base of a tree, sit up it and wait for a deer to wander over for a sniff. Then they blast it. Very manly lol!
"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged from the way it treats its animals" (Mahatma Gandhi). Just don't get me started on Americans' love of mutilating their pets (de-barking dogs, de-clawing cats etc), so that they conform to their sad little lifestyles...

I live in Indiana. It is illegal to sell game meat of any kind. It is illegal to hunt with any rifles that uses ammo bigger than pistol caliber ammo for hunting. All of that, in Indiana, is considered poaching. My question is, should it be illegal to hunt an animal and throw away the meat? Should it be illegal to hunt without the intention of using the meat, or giving it away?

If, by discarding the meat, you're reducing it to 'trophy hunting' then I really don't see the point in hunting. What exactly have you proven, that you can kill a deer with a high-powered rifle and a scope? Not exactly an impressive achievement, is it?

All of the meat should be harvested. I went hunting and a friend tagged an elk, and wanted to leave about 40lbs. of neck meat behind.

I cut it out and packed it out. Then the next week I went vegetarian. Go figure. LOL

Anything illegal that deals with hunting is considered poaching in most places. Poaching deals with more than the illegal killing of animals for profit. It deals with what weapons can be used, where and when animals can be hunted, and other issues.

    No, its not.

I find the pictures of people who down large animals to be amusing. I hear them saw (in my mind):

"Ohhhhhh boy, look at me. I killed a herbivore from three hundred yards with a rifle!"

If it were a butter knife I would be impressed.

As well as hunting without a permit. "Poaching" is a broad term.

Poaching is the illegal hunting of an animal I believe. So no it's not poaching. If you want to argue whether or not it's immoral or should be illegal than that's slightly different. Most states require hunters to take the meat and throwing it away would be illegal. You might be able to turn people in if this is indeed going on around you. Giving meat away is also illegal in every state I'm familiar with(not too many).
