GOP Lawmaker Gets a Tiny Fine for Having Sex With Patients

Huffington Post | By Michael McAuliff | 05/23/2013 3:15 pm EDT
    Excerpts:

“Rep. Scott DesJarlais (R-Tenn.) was fined $500 Thursday by Tennessee medical authorities for carrying on sexual affairs with his patients.

DesJarlais' infidelities were first reported by The Huffington Post last year, based on records from his 2001 divorce.

The pro-life, family-values congressman - a doctor who once urged his mistress to get an abortion - won his 2012 reelection easily, but a watchdog group filed complaints with the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners.

The board has now slapped DesJarlais with a pair of $250 fines for inappropriate relationships with two patients.

The fines did not please Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, which filed the complaints.

"There are more expensive traffic tickets," said CREW Executive Director Melanie Sloan. "Tennessee authorities apparently believe sexual exploitation of women is less serious than speeding."

In a statement, CREW noted that "Tennessee law strictly prohibits such conduct and possible penalties include restrictions on a physician's practice, suspension, and revocation of his medical license. No such penalties were imposed on Rep. DesJarlais."

"Despite the fact that Rep. DesJarlais's conduct is a clear-cut violation of Tennessee law, state authorities gave him a pass," Sloan said. "Let's hope the Office of Congressional Ethics, which is also considering a complaint against Rep. DesJarlais, takes a dimmer view of his outrageous misconduct."

The fines were formally deemed a "reprimand" by the medical board, which found that DesJarlais' conduct had violated several state laws and amounted to unprofessional conduct.

The Tennessee representative signed a consent order earlier this week stipulating to the findings.

He may also have to pay costs for the adjudicating of the case, up to $1,000. The board could have taken stronger actions, such as suspending DesJarlais' license or revoking it altogether.

While Sloan was upset with the light fines, the board argued in its decision that it was acting "in order to protect the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of the State of Tennessee and ensure that the public confidence in the integrity of the medical profession is preserved."

DesJarlais' office and the board could not immediately be reached for comment.”

    ......

IMO: When the state of Tennessee allows a republican candidate with such a sleazy reputation to go on to become a Representative of their state, you know the party is corrupt.

This person who extolls family values, prolife, and being a man of integrity, cheats on his wife, tells his pregnant mistress to get an abortion and still is allowed to run for re=election, we gotta know something is really wrong with the “family values” party.

The republican party is so corrupt it is bulging at the seams and is visible to everyone. This is what happens when a political party is leaderless: It becomes everyone for himself, and without any morals, scruples, or integrity as each politician fights for supremacy within the party.

When sleazoids like DesJarlais, Vitter, Ensign, and Issa are allowed to be in office, it does not speak well for any political party, least of all the republican party that runs it party on alleged “family
    values.”

I would only argue that this is a travesty of justice regardless of the political beliefs of the offender, as opposed to you who describes your opposition to this light punishment as being contingent on the political beliefs of the offender.

This is the face of the GOP, act without ethics, sleep with anyone, even pay for it, and complain about lack of family values...I think if the GOP had any morals they would run him out of town, instead they re-elect him.
Pathetic and is the end to any right wing family values arguments.

Ensure that the DOCTOR confidence in their NEVER being brought to account of abusive, manipulative and illegal conduct.

What is even sadder is the fact that it is ILLEGAL for a doctor to have sex with his patients. It was NOT ILLEGAL for Clinton to have sex with a mid-20's college graduate groupie.

Yet Republicans see no difference between lawbreaking and bad taste.

Once again, your off topic. This thread is about a Dr. who happens to be a US Representative having inappropriate relationships with patients; not Bill Clinton. Stop trying to derail this thread.

No, the comments by HuffPo groupie Agent_286 widened the topic to Republicans in general and that lets in sleazy Dems like Bill Clinton too.

I kind of feel the same way about the Obama admin and the Democrat party. Instead of affairs, we are talking about Operation Fast & Furious' dead Border Patrol agent and dozens and dozens of dead Mexicans including kids at a birthday party killed with Obama admin guns; Benghazi- an assassinated US ambassador, 3 dead Americans, lax security, ignored requests for security, stand-down orders, Obama and Hillary leaving their posts, the Big Lie Cover up, the terroridsts identified, tracked, and left unmolested by Obama; The DoJ authorized by Eric Holder to seize the records of several news agencies and his many lies to congress; and the Obama admin's use of the IRS to harass taxpayers with audits and deny fundraising rights for political reasons.

The lack of outrage from the Left is amazing. They must approve of these criminal thugs. Disgusting.......

Glad he was caught but he should have gotten more then a slap on the wrist. It's a shame though that some people are only against this behavior because of his political affiliation.

Really? Is he the face of the GOP because they said so or is it because you said so? Very few people on the right are going to defend this man.
