Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) was busted in what may have been another incident of plagiarism on Monday. As first reported by BuzzFeed, there are unmistakable similarities between an opinion piece Paul wrote for The Washington Times on drug sentencing in September, and an article written by Dan Stewart of The Week a week earlier. BuzzFeed highlighted two excerpts from Stewart's piece -- an introduction to mandatory minimum sentences for drug offenses and the story of a man affected by them -- from which Paul appears to have borrowed heavily.

Stewart wrote this in the introduction of his piece:

At least 20 states, both red and blue, have reformed their mandatory sentencing laws in some way, and Congress is considering a bipartisan bill that would do the same for federal crimes.

Paul's op-ed included the same sentence -- with the addition of a hyphen:

At least 20 states, both red and blue, have reformed their mandatory-sentencing laws in some way, and Congress is considering a bipartisan bill that would do the same for federal crimes.

Stewart wrote this about John Horner, a man who sold his own painkillers to a friend:

He will be 72 by the time he is released, and his three young children will have grown up without him. “Matt,” who turned out to have a long history of drug offenses, was more fortunate -- he received a reduced sentence of just 18 months after informing on Horner, and is now free.

And here's how Paul recounted Horner's story:

John will be 72 years old by the time he is released, and his three young children will have grown up without him. The informant, who had a long history of drug offenses, was more fortunate -- he received a reduced sentence of just 18 months, and is now free.

My take - although not the worst cause of plagiarism in history given both posts are informational and not opinionated, it does show the lazy and deceitful character of Paul.

Not surprisingly, the right delusionals are trying to ignore these truths.

Imagine if that had been a political lefty!

    What hypocrisy!!

    FAIL !

"Obama has acknowledged that he should have given Patrick credit when speaking, saying that “He (Patrick) had suggested we use these lines. I thought they were good lines. I’m sure I should have. Didn’t this time.”

Didn't bother reading your own link, huh ? Obama actually got verbal permission from the author of the quote to use it.

Credit should always be given where credit is due. Plagiarism is no different than stealing, it's deceitful, dishonest and frankly reeks of not being able to generate an original thought.

My "link" was 3,000+ links. Derr

Yes I read some, years ago.

Which one are you referring to, June 2008? Sep 2013? Aug 2012? Jan 2008? May 2010? Mar 2013? Nov 2012?, etc., etc.

(Good reading would be the ones where he stole many of his ideas from Hillary, his enemy, then friend, and now enemy again).

But hey, why let history end the fun... let's bash Paul !!

    Your turn!

plagiarism is not accepting the beliefs and ideas of other individuals. plagiarism is the deliberate taking and reproduction of words and tangible concepts and promoting them as your own. the problem with Rand is not that he read those words and paraphrased them, he freaking copied them word for word and put them off as his own.

    Poor Rand stuck now.

He backs down and admits he was wrong...all his supporters and the Paul Cultists look like fools for defending him.

He "sticks to his guns" (or calls for more "duels")....he looks like a fool and with Ted Cruz around, his shot at the 2016 Nomination decreases even further.

Are you unclear on the difference between permission and forgiveness?

If someone writes that the sky is blue, and then someone else writes, the sky is blue. Is that plagiarism?

I understand perfectly. I also understand when there is a witch hunt and a resounding attempt to find anything to undermine a persons integrity. The left are experts at creating mountains from mole hills.

    That certainly wasn't clear...

To plagiarize is to be without integrity, it's the theft of ideas. You have any idea what the consequences for that are in an academic setting? I'm gonna guess no.

Endorsing and condoning plagiarism, that's a new one for me.

Yes, yes they are. And so is the right. What do you think is all the fun in these forums? It is also why nothing gets done in DC that benefits the american people. To busy pointing fingers.

Democrats just hate Rand Paul because they're backward-thinking racists. They hate him more than they love the country.

What I don't understand is why people can't just condemn him for his actions without also condemning others.

Liars are liars, plagiarizers are plagiarizers. Why do you dolts care which "team" they're on, you sound like moronic sports fans incapable of rational thought.

No it doesn't. How silly. If you are so outraged at this then you should be really angry at obama and company. I forgot that libs only express rage at conservatives... LOL!

Yes, but... it looks like Paul has a problem here. If this is the worst of it then I won't get too worked up about it but I won't vote for anyone that needs Biden's behavior for a shield.

Apologists for Paul just do not get it. Paul will say whatever is put in front of him. Where is his own input? Most politicians give input to their own speeches. Paul just accepts what others hand him. Wikipedia??? Completely lifted and was obvious to everyone. I am not sure whether he added anything to his books.

I have questioned Rand Paul's intelligence for sometime and I cannot believe that anyone thinks that he would be a good candidate for President.
