You still don't get it, do you? We're for providing a safety net for those who really need it. We just aren't sold on the notion that you have to (*)(*)(*)(*) up 280 million people's insurance to cater to the needs of 30 million who either don't want it or can afford to get it out of pocket.

This always seems to slip the minds of the nanny-staters.

You mean people who think and vote like Pelosi. The ones who think we should vote before we read things. Them Dems are a wily bunch.

Well you are half right. Half the people are too stupid to handle their own healthcare. We call them Obama voters around here.

I doubt I'll like it unless it's "outlaw non-emergency health insurance."

    - - - Updated - - -

We don't need taxes for any of it. Sell bonds..

I'm no longer a GOP member, but I did make that suggestion to the Obama voter next door when she ran over my flowerbed with her lawn mower.

    - - - Updated - - -

Why? We'll let you know the specifics of it after the vote.

For whatever it is worth, they would be wise to combine all federally funded health insurance into a single system--Medicare, Medicaid, ACA, VA and make people eligible on a sliding payment scale and otherwise get completely out of the private or state meddled health insurance. Basically a non-universal, single payer federal system and anybody else could do whatever the hell they want without federal funding or regulation.

Please explain. It sounds as much like a protectionist racket as unions. What's wrong with Blue Shield of California having to compete with an insurance company based in Idaho?

"moocher", Ah, the conservative label for the impoverished, the working poor, the disabled, the elderly.

"moocher", recipient of all your hard earned tax dollars, but raise defence spending by 20 or 25 billion cause that'll make me think my arse is safe.

"moocher", dehumanization in order to dismiss them more easily.

"moocher", sneering contempt for a minority of a minority yet applied to all.

you keep regurgitating this notion that do not have any collective responsibilty for the general welfare of the nation. You seem totally oblivious to the benefits investing in the nation's children, of providing opportunities, or at least leveling the playing field a little. You heap the "sins" of the mother (mostly imagined) on all her children.

What a warm, wonderful caring attitude.
I just don't understand a political perspective that is so misanthropic, unaware of the big picture, full of agressive distain and that believes in "letting em eat cake" all so some individual can have a couple hundred bucks more a year in after tax income. Better that you should have a steak dinner than a couple of kids going hungry in the ghetto.

Pride that requires denigration of others isn't pride at all, its merely arrogant conceit.

"Competition" implies both insurers are subject to the same set of ground rules. But under the GOP across-state-lines proposals, they're not. Meaning one "competitor" is handicapped relative to the other. That's a recipe for a dysfunctional marketplace.

Here is an explanation from another member that sums it up quite well.

They will probably propose a plan similar to obamacare
    Or a savings plan

1988 my employer offered a choice
employees: remain covered under the existing group insurance plan
or leave the insurance plan and join a savings plan and receive 85% of their premium as salary
One person join the savings plan
He was young and figured he would not need Health Insurance
He did not count on detached retina Less than two years later
and the fact that the insurance company would not negotiate with the hospital for his operation cost
And both the Dr. and hospital knew that he would have to pay whatever they charged
    Bottom line total cost $26,000
He had accumulated less than $2000

replace the conservative individual mandate with a public option, I would support that

    - - - Updated - - -

republicans also want to make the employer side contribution taxable as income

Yeah, what was that plan that the Heritage Foundation came up with, and Newt Gingrich endorsed.
I think they called it the Individual Mandate........and it works, exactly like ObamaCare.....

Hospitals can't negotiate with people who pay cash.
Because they have a deal with the insurance companies that they get 80% of reasonable and customary fee.
So an insurance company would pay around $20,000 for that detached retina.
But not very many actually pay out of pocket, and if the hospital told this young man, "OK, give use $10,000 and we'll call it square", the insurance company would say "OK, so $10,000 is your customary fee, we paid you $2,000,000 for for 100 of those procedures, we should have paid you $800,000, you owe us $1.2 million.".
Gypsies pay cash, they show up at Mass General with $75,000 in cash when they need heart surgery, because Gypsies want the best, and they can pay for it.

There was not much of a reason for the Republicans to come up with an alternative plan before they would 1. have a chance to implement it and 2. the public realized that Obamacare was not going to work.

Why does it work with nearly every other type of insurance?

I can not believe that anyone believes that. We had 40 years to think about this reform. The GOP never offered anything. I now that some group has finally attempted some reform, the GOP obstructs and now thinks it knows what to do. 40 years too late, dodo.

Will you guys stop your baloney? You have never pushed for a safety net or health care reform. You johnny come latelys only talk about doing something when the Democrats have done something. You have sat back and have wanted to keep things as they were 100 years ago. It has taken the left to go after progress before anything gets done.

It should tell you something about yourself when a woman wants to run over your flowerbed with a mower.

Another one who cops out about some new GOP plan. Now not knowing what it is means there will be no bill to vote on.

Democrat solution = die by over taxation and over regulation

I'd rather die free than die under the jack-booted thuggery of the Federal Government.

What is there to explain? Jonsa said: but are fully prepared to usurp states rights by allowing insurance companies to sell across state lines, which effectively allows insurers to ignore state laws and rules. If that is truly the plan, it should be noted that the few republican states that have attempted to set up a "compact" amongst themselves have failed miserably, and most industry analysts have concluded that it won't have much impact on controlling costs, even it it did work.

Didn't you read that? That is why an insurance company in Idaho with different requirements should not sell in CA. If the company wants to meet CA's requirements, then it could sell it CA.

You guys only know about the corrupt monopoly systems in your Red States. Blue States set up what should be in a benefit package and any company that meets those requirements can sell in the state. Blue States do not what scam insurers to seel in their states.

Why? People were complaining about rising costs for 30 years. Why must they wait until some group puts their plan into effect before they came up with their "alternative"? That seems to fit their obstructionist method.

They are insurance for entities - house, car or boat. We don't care if you screw up your plaan and lose everything. But when you screw up your health insurance, we taxpayers have to pick up the slack.
