This thread is a lie. Ted Nugent doesn't have a mind.

    He dodged the draft.
Not that I will condemn him for that, but I believe there is a lot of sub-conscious guilt in folks like that. Another young man took his place, who did not dodge the draft. Quite possibly this young man, this replacement, was KIA or WIA in Vietnam. Meanwhile Mr. Nugent went on to a successful recording and touring career. He owns a large plot of land and is able to enjoy his hobbies and enjoy life and purport the virtues of gun ownership and hunting. I have no problem with any of that or in his right to his opinions, but I have little respect for him.

If it was me, I'd own up to what I did...intentionally avoiding a military draft. Acknowledge another young man, took his place.

Thank the armed forces for what they do, acknowledge they are better men and women than you and slink back to your hunting lodge.

I would not want his endorsement of any conservative campaign.

    Dodging the draft?

    Roughly 12% failed to show...
    for the sake of argument
    1 in 10

Mr. Nugent goes on an on about the 2nd amendment and I'll say again the virtues of gun ownership which I support him on. The 2nd Amendment is clearly interpreted to mean law abiding citizens have a Constitutionally protected right to own firearms.

    It's all good.

However, what Mr. Nugent may not understand is that the uniformed services take an oath that in part....entails supporting and defending the very Constitution Mr. Nugent so aptly quotes from.

He didn't take this oath, he evaded it...intentionally.

If he is indeed so gung-ho..or should I say "gun-ho" 2nd Amendment how about taking an oath to support and defend it, up to and including putting your life on the line.

    He didn't do that.

You want to make a hero out of him, be my guest, it's still a free country.

I think we should have conscription. Mandatory 2 years for all competent to serve. When not fighting wars, they'd be repairing roads and other infrastructure and aid with relief efforts worldwide.

This way if the girls want to vote, they gotta fight like the other half. It would prolly cut down on a lot of inner-city crime too...

And we wouldn't be here (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)ing about Nugent's draft record.

There are many, including Slick Willie, who dodged the draft. I did not, but I never had bad feelings toward those who did or went to Canada. I knew the war in Vietnam was stupid and political even then!

The hypocrisy of some who criticize Nugent is a bit silly though!

"dead or in jail by this time next year"

It's a shame that Ted Nugent isn't a man of his word.

    What precisely is hypocritical.

    I served, 18 years.

If someone started a thread on Pres. Clinton, I'd say the same...
    another draft evader.

The fact remains, for every individual who evaded it...rightly or wrongly..someone else didn't.

Someone elses number came up in the draft and they honored it.

Would you like to know Nugent's story?

In August 1969, Nugent took his draft physical and was rejected for service. He was classified as 1-Y, indicating that he was qualified for service only in time of a national emergency. The 1-Y classification was usually issued to candidates saddled with significant medical or mental issues.

The story goes, and I can't confirm it as I wasn't there...he purposely stopped bathing for a month so as to appear unfit for service..a head case.

    It worked.

Apparently he later had the mental where with all to flourish as a recording artist and is now worth an estimated $20 million.

There are probably legitimate cases of 1-Y classifications, but it's clear to me, Mr. Nugent faked it to avoid being drafted.

Maybe he though the war was unjust...I don't know...what is known, is that someone went when he elected to not go.

You could say what you want about my opinion, it is a forum to express opinions...
however hypocrisy is an undue characterization.

I know all of that, and I agree. What I meant by "hypocrisy" was those who only criticize those on the right as being draft dodgers, but never criticize their own. I criticize both, but I also try to understand their thinking. It's not always because they were a coward, but what they did was wrong!

    I agree.

    I was born in 1964.
    Vietnam was not my war.

I cannot say with complete honesty what I would have done. It was an unpopular "police action," and it's very possible I would have sought a college deferment to avoid the draft. Very possible.

    If I did that,
I wouldn't be proud of it, and I'd probably keep a low profile, because once you get on a national stage, the past can haunt you.

I personally like Ted Nugent, he's entertaining, he promotes gun safety, he promotes hunting...I don't have a problem with any of that.
However, when he starts getting political, I'm not sure he helps the conservative cause all the time. He's a little extreme and he has a past.

That is not to defend Bill Clinton either, who openly expressed his hatred of the military in a letter to a Colonel in the National Guard. I do not support Bill Clinton in any way, shape or form...politically, though I served under him as he was CiC. I didn't have much choice but to keep my mouth shut at that time.

With Ted I mostly remember his music and met his mom one time living up in the burbs of Chicago. She was a real cool lady, she used to write an article in the local paper.

I liked her more then him.

But again I never met him and talked to him in person.

You left out the part where he (*)(*)(*)(*) in his pants for a week prior to the exam.

Also where he had the parents of an underage girl "sign her over" so he could marry her leading to him describing himself as a "serial pedophile." They were divorced because he cheated on her.

It's hard to believe Ted would have been turned away for smearing poop on himself and generally starving himself, they would have been wise to that at the induction center. When I went through the induction center there were guys trying to act gay, complaining about all kinds of ailments....all to no avail. NOBODY wanted to go....but basically, if you fit the uniform and could breathe you were as good as on the bus to basic training.

I read on Snopes he was 1-Y (student deferment) then 1-A but after induction he was 4-F. Funny story but, I think maybe there is something wrong with him that may be more than Ted want's to divulge although I don't know what could be more horrendous than the story he told.

That being said Ted does say he was part of the 60's culture that was down on 'the man' and the military, etc. That was a function of the media, TV and the new advanced camera technology that brought the war to American dinner time.

If Ted is to be believed, he now has 'seen the light' does no drugs, doesn't drink and has made a complete about-face toward conservatism and tradition. He supports the NRA which (IMO) is defending our constitutional rights so, I'm not particularly against him but President? Maybe, we have a radical leftie in office now....

I believe Mr. Nugent would make a very compelling yet dignified spokesman for the Tea Party. He definitely speaks their language. I discovered that Mr Nugent reads his Facebook page and even responds to it. I would encourage everyone to tell Ted what they think about his recent comments.

My father dodged the draft too. He volunteered for military service during the Vietnam War. So the draft number that should have went to my dad instead went to some other poor schmuck. My father doesn't feel sorry for that one bit; Uncle Sam got a piece of him, and my dad got a piece of Uncle Sam in return, in the form of specialized training in electronics. Which turned into a long career after the military as a telecommunications engineer; over 25 years of service to the state of Alaska.

My point is that not all draft dodgers were cowards. The smart ones played Uncle Sam to get ahead, while the rest, to paraphrase John Kerry, got sent to Vietnam. Ted Nugent's story, however, is a little different: http://www.snopes.com/politics/military/nugent.asp

The nugget didn't asvoid Vietnam because he thought it ws wrong. It would get in the way of his partying.

So he craps all over himself to convince the board his was nuts.

Well, maybe being nuts is not that great a reach.

We can call him a racist piece of crap for using terms like 'sub-human mongrel" which would be more appropriate for a venue like the Voelkische Beobacher.

Who cares? Another ploy for a few more minutes in the spotlight that will, like all the rest of them, end in nothing but failure.

If Ted Nugent was a left leaning, animal activist...tree hugger.

The right would condemn him for "avoiding" the draft. He'd be skewered.

The fact is, he loves guns and "shootin'" stuff and the right loves him.

It's why politics pretty much sucks...

I'm not right or left...I'm conservative.
more from the ilk of William F. Buckley than the loud mouth Ted Nugent...
but apparently the "neo" conservative loves guys holding semi-automatic weapons who pretend to be G.I. Joe, yet passed on the opportunity to shoot things that shoot back.

I'm taking an unbiased view of the guy. He "avoided" the draft yet projects the "tough guy" persona, an American patriot that's ready to defend the nation with his personal armory. The fact is, he passed on his opportunity to defend the nation.

You can claim, oh it was bad war, who could blame him...but someone with ideologically different views...well they're a coward.

Never said he was a coward, I just refuse to worship him as anything more than a has been rock star who reinvented himself as a gun nut tough guy, who is probably the biggest (*)(*)(*)(*)(*) there is if you take his guns away.

Not one of my more eloquent posts...but it is

    the BLUF

    the bottom line up front

Someone needs to remind Teddy Nugget that the Republicans don't take kindly to draft dodgers.

While this is on my mind and I'm on a "rant," so to speak.

Referring back to William F. Buckley, the father of modern conservatism, but is probably a big "?" to any conservative under 40...
he was drafted into the Army in 1944, discharged in 1946.

Since deceased...the man carried himself with class...you won't see photo ops of him at the "range" with his buddies or posing with dead deer....

What's happened to the Republicans is that it has abandoned it's intellectual approach to politics and instead adopted...cliches'
Photo-ops with an AR-15 will win over the constituency more so than articulate debate of issues that actually effect our daily lives.

America deserves the leaders it gets.

Appreciate the opportunity to vent, and apologies to the author of the OP for temporarily side tracking your thread.

on that note...you all may have the final word.

    Good evening...as it were.

    Total agreement here.

The GOP Southern Strategy since integration has been largely to appeal to racial prejudice and a sense that the Federal Government was out to suppress the good ole boys from Day-one. It went viral after the first gun control laws.

I honestly can't. It's one of the hypocrisies in the modern GOP. It just so happens that many of them claim to hate draft dodgers and those who are anti-war in general.

But you're right. If they accept clowns like Limbaugh, then anything is fair game to them.
