Gun owners are more likely to shoot you for going on their property. All they care about is their possessions and wanting to shoot someone. Unless you will be killed there is no reason to take another persons life.
How do you take the leap from gun owner to only caring about their possessions and wanting to shoot someone? I'm a gun owner and will protect myself and my family with a gun, but I would never wish for it to happen. Gun owners I know don't ever want to have to use their weapon to defend their lives, especially if it means taking the life of another, but they're willing to do so if necessary if the alternative is their own death or the death of a loved one. I'm not sure why that is so offensive to people.
I don't suppose there's much can be done about the paranoia that has it that there's always someone about to cause severe harm at any second. It seems fully ingrained and integrated into the US psyche. It's a form of collective insanity but since it's so widespread it'll never be seen as such. It's this 'unseen enemy'. They're there but just out of sight and ready to pounce at any moment. Be prepared at all times. It's the black dude with the hoodie. It's a Muslim with box cutters. It's the reds under the bed. It's the pervert behind every tree. They're there, waiting to kill. We've all read the stories. We've all seen the news. There's a great movie, it'll scare you silly. Check out this video game, wow! That chick, she got raped. Gay aliens abducted Bob's granny. Guns keep me and mine safe from all of that. It's all in the mind. Almost everyone goes from cradle to grave without major incident. The most blatant actual threat people face is probably cancer. Good luck with shooting that one to death to save your life.
self-defense is a natural right. if you try to steal my stuff, I will shoot you. if you try to hurt me, I will shoot you. don't like it? don't try to steal my stuff or hurt me.
A friend of mine that I work with has just decided to buy a gun. Someone tried taking her daughter the other day. You want to try again?
Her daughter just went out to the car to grab something and some guy grabbed her. She was able to get away and run to her aunt while her mom chased after him barefoot(I mention that because she got a piece of glass in her foot and still chased him). The police were able to find and pick him up though so thankfully he's in custody and her daughter is alright. Shaken up but alright.
I agree and disagree. I own guns. Far more than the average. I have never pointed one at a person. I did rack the slide of my trust 870 one time when there was four kids trying to break into a trailer my brother had parked at my place. I think gun owners are more likely to shoot because they own guns. I do agree that a gun should not be used unless your life is in danger. My thoughts are if someone was breaking into my house, I would simply go into my bedroom, close the door, grab a pistol, and call the police to let them sort it out. If at any point my life was in danger, then it would be time for self defense. If someone wants to steal my tv or other worldly possessions whilst we wait for the police, go for it. It is replaceable. I see no reason to go chasing after folks for taking something replaceable, and certainly no reason to shoot them. I also think too many folks think a gun is the solution to every problem. In the county I live in, a CCW is rarely issued. Would I carry a gun if I could get a CCW? Probably on some occasions, but certainly not all the time. Do I think it will solve the nation's problems? No.
Nah. We've got to tell you you have no right to defend yourself because you're going to hurt somebody who's life is more valuable than your own. Sorry. How dare you defend yourself? You have no right to. You must not defend yourself. By the way if you own a car you're more than likely to run over somebody just for the laughs. You know how evil those cars are. Let's ban them.
I don't think it is...I think its the unwillingness to find a way limit the carnage, finding a way of keeping weapons out of the wrong hands...
sorry about that man. hope she's ok. now that i have an adorable little niece, this story is VERY scary.
Everyone seems to be doing fine. I worked with her last night and she was doing pretty well. I'm trying to help her find a place in the same town I live because it's pretty much Mayberry. Anyway she's decided she was going to purchase a gun and even decided her children were going to take a safety class too so they will know not to play with it and treat it like a toy. I have no nieces or children of my own so I have no idea just scary it can be. The closest I can relate is when my aunt went missing and this story here when I heard someone tried to hurt my friend. But just from that it is scary indeed.
makes me sad that any mother would feel that she needs to have a handgun to protect her family. ...but it is her right.
as a born & raised NYC-boy, guns frighten me. and yet I still have my handy-dandy 10/22 sitting in my closet, for shootin' targets and cans.
I realize that your a Canadian. So, if someone comes to steal your TV, you would probably help them load it in their car. Then tell them to have a great night. So, the average burglar would probably come unarmed. But in the states, we have a tendency to believe in protecting what we own. For that reason, most burglars come armed with guns, It would stand to reason that the resident of the house would stand a better chance of survival if he/she was also armed. So, to an extent, you are correct. But that is not a testament on their humanity in general. It is simply a testament of placing the value of their families' lives over that of the thief(s). So enjoy your life in the land of the pansies, and stay out of US politics.
i would never shoot someone to kill unless they were trying to hurt me or someone else. if they were trying to rob my home or car but not hurt anyone, i would try to shoot to injure, if its possible.
Their needs to be a healthy respect for a gun if you're going to keep one around. You don't point it at anyone, you don't leave it where a kid can easily access it, and you don't treat it like a toy. More people who own guns need to remember that. When you have a gun then you have a responsibility to yourself and everyone else to treat it with the utmost respect and fear so as not to injure someone accidentally. As of right now I don't have one but I hope to get one in the future. Since I live in a sleepy little town I don't really need to worry about carrying it with me but I would like to have one for home defense in case I ever need it.
not much here folks, just another emotionally powered scare tactic. Learn to handle a gun and you wont be so terrified about them. Conquer your fears instead of feeding them.
I read your follow up post and since he was fleeing the scene there would have been no justification to shoot the guy. Also if your friend had a gun it would have been a bad idea to fire a gun in a residential neighbourhood. Also if she drew a gun on him he could have used her as a shield. Guns just don't make you safer.
I'm with Ron on this. Unless your life is clearly in danger shoot to incapacitate or disable. Now if I happened to see someone in my house with a gun then yeah, I'm not taking that chance. But if I can injure them and let the police do the rest then that's what I'm going to do.
