Australia has decided to remove the term “occupied” when referring to East Jerusalem in a move blasted by an opposition party leader Friday as “inflammatory” and “at odds with the peace process.”

The issue flared in the upper house Senate this week with Attorney-General George Brandis issuing a statement to clarify Canberra’s stance on the controversial question of the legality of settler homes.

“The description of areas which are the subject of negotiations in the course of the peace process by reference to historical events is unhelpful,” he said in the statement Thursday.

“The description of East Jerusalem as ‘occupied’ East Jerusalem is a term freighted with pejorative implications which is neither appropriate nor useful.

“It should not and will not be the practice of the Australian government to describe areas of negotiation in such judgmental language.”

He added that Canberra supported a peaceful solution to the dispute “which recognizes the right of Israel to exist peacefully within secure borders and also recognizes the aspiration to statehood of the Palestinian people.”

Israel’s army seized the West Bank, including Arab east Jerusalem, in the Six-Day War of 1967.

It later annexed the entire eastern sector, in a move that has never been recognized by the international community.

Brandis sparked a heated debate on Wednesday evening in the Senate when he stated that no Australian government of either political persuasion “acknowledges or accepts” the use of the word “occupied.”

A number of senators disagreed, pointing out that Australia had voted in support of U.N. resolutions in 2011 and 2012 where such language was used to describe the East Jerusalem settlements.

Independent senator Nick Xenophon suggested that dropping the term “occupied” would represent a “massive shift” in Australia’s foreign policy, Australian Associated Press reported.

The leader of the Australian Greens Christine Milne Friday called it “an outrageous backdown” by the Tony Abbott-led government.

“It is inflammatory behavior and at odds with the peace process,” she said in a statement.

“The use of the term ‘Occupied Palestinian Territories’ is the accepted term used by the U.N.

“The Israeli settlements built after 1967 are illegal. The settlements contravene the Fourth Geneva Convention.”

If the brave Australian can, so can we.
The Palestinian wall of lies will not live forever.

    Good for Australia.

It's good to see the antisemites pulling their hair out.

Hate Australia? No. The moron who came up with this decision is under fire, and rightly so. I agree with Bob Carr; the Zionists appear to have found new breeding ground in Australia.

On the contrary, we're a very important player in the Asia Pacific region. Not to mention, in giving all our military sovereignty to the United States, we've become an important country in world policing.

As for the OP, I don't think it's necessary for us to form an official national policy on Israel. We should stay out of it entirely.

If you want to become an important player in the world, and i hope you will, you'll have to deal with
    world politics.
I agree that Israel is a small country without importance, it's the Palestinian wall of lies which put her in the spot lights

I have no interest in becoming an important player in the world, but that's what we've become nonetheless. We should stay out of the Israel/Palestine dispute to the best of our ability. It's none of our business.

We did? Australia is funny. We have some strict laws and our taxation is high, but the judicial system usually lenient enough to give us more liberty than most. You can quite comfortably live how you like in rural areas, even when that way of life is illegal.

The problem when it comes to our foreign policy is that we don't know how to be independent. We've been a vassal of either Britain or the US throughout our history. We've come of age, we need to abandon such dependence and focus our diplomatic energy on voluntary integration with the Asia Pacific. Free trade unmarred by protectionism, free immigration, abandoning ANZUS and other military ties with the US/UK, and promoting independent friendship with other nations which respect our sovereignty.

But you're not 'important' in the sense that this decision will have any significant implications.

It's a bad and unpopular decision. Not even the US supports the view Australia has adopted. It'll most likely be repealed once Abbott leaves office.

How is this a lie? You are occupying the land, are you not? Or is it now officially your land? What else could you call it?

How East Jerusalem is called in Australia does not make much difference in practice but there may be a sinister intent behind the Abbot government's decision to take a radical pro-Israel stance. Attorney-General George Brandi previously attempted to legalise racist insults and hate speech in Australia by amending the country's race law and it's hard to believe that Brandi actually cares about the peace process. Brandi told Parliament that people have a right to be bigots and he may be trying to challenge political correctness in today's society.

"occupied" I mean in terms of international law, which means when a military invade and hold positions in a territory that is not their own, and then run things there. It's not actually your land.

As for what's the problem? The problem is an infringement on human rights of people there.

There are no soldiers and no check points between East and West Jeruslaem, ppl are free to walk and go everywhere in Jerusalem, it is in practice part of Israel and Israel sees it as unified,

What Zimbabwe may think of it is equel to what Israelis think of the Limpopo river illegal fishing.

No human rights are being offended in Jerusalem, civil rights may be for residents that refuse Israeli citizenship, that's life.

Using the term occupied is inflammatory and siding with one side. We are more neutral on the issue then to take either side... Bob Carr on the other hand was a really bad foreign minister and pushed his own personal agenda's.
