This is fricking insane. I realize there's been 70 something school shootings since Sandy Hook and schools and students are scared, paranoid, but twirling a pencil and being threatened to be put up for adoption? Asinine.

VERNON, N.J. (PIX11) – A 13-year-old boy was the most famous kid in school for a few weeks.

A simple pencil-twirling incident landed Ethan Chaplin in hot water with his school, which threatened to suspend him after a classmate claimed he was spinning the writing utensil like a gun.

After media attention from PIX11 and around the world, school officials backed off — but child protection agencies did not.

Letters to Ethan’s father, Michael, show the school found his son did nothing wrong at all, and that there would be no disciplinary action. The superintendent was even confident the issue would be behind all of them.

And that’s exactly what happened, until Ethan’s father received startling communication from New Jersey’s Department of Child Protection and Permanency and Department of Children and Families.

“I received a letter from them saying they had found an incident of abuse or neglect regarding Ethan because I refused to take him for psychological evaluation,” Michael said.

In an effort to play along and clear his name, Michael agreed to take his son for an evaluation.

Ethan was seen by a social worker, and had his blood drawn and urine taken. In the end, no behavioral problem was found.

The state, it seems, is ignoring that set of testing, demanding further evaluation and threatening that if Michael doesn’t comply, they are will terminate his parental rights and free Ethan up for adoption.

“All I can do is keep fighting, keep telling the truth and (keep) presenting the evidence. That is all I can do and hopefully the state does the right thing,” Michael said.

He has even reached out to Governor Chris Christie’s office, who replied they would contact the Dept. of Children and Families to investigate.

“…I’m scared because they have a habit of running away with things unchecked and that’s exactly what’s going on,” Michael said.

PIX11 tried to get a comment from DCPP and NJ Department of Children and Families but received no answers.

The agency told PIX11 they can’t discuss the allegations or even acknowledge they have involvement with the family.

You know, EVEN CHILDREN SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT TO DUE PROCESS.

However, you really shouldn't generalize about America in this way. All countries have incidents like this, so I don't see why it's okay to generalize about the US like this.

More importantly, I want to get rid of zero tolerance policies because of crap like this. Zero tolerance policies are for people who are unthinking retards who only care for their own authority.

How do you twirl a pencil that looks like twirling a gun?

I would bet the student who reported the twirling just wanted to get the kid in trouble.

Many of our social agencies have become run by idiots.

Just wait and see what happens the next time a kid bites his pop tart into the shape of a gun. I see prison time for that.

I mean his father. Obviously a man who would have a son who would bite a cookie into the shape of a gun is a very bad man. A man who is obviously a danger to society. Lock him up for at least 50 years.

I hope you're being facetious with that remark.

You do know that in some cities parents can be held responsible for the children's actions and be sent to jail, don't you?

They're gonna push it too far.

If social services shows up to try and take someone's child for a reason like that, the reactions WILL be violent and fathers most certainly be armed.

    I would be....

LOL this is nothing here in MA we yank kids out of school if they shape their thumb and forefinger into the shape of a gun or drawn one on paper, like every other child has done for centuries.

Just another product of the "everyone gets a trophy" culture that the "enlightened sensitive" have been promoting for decades.

We reap what we sow. Must be the fall.

The Republicans have made a LOT of political hay out of their "zero tolerance" policy. It was batpoop crazy when they introduced it, and it's every bit as nuts today.

Let me guess, the GOPs are now blaming everyone else for their creation, right?

I imagine guns in schools or the talk of guns is similar to bombs in an airport or airplane.
People will over react. Better safe than sorry.

it's not too surprising when you think of the type of people who work in these government social departments, especially the child welfare bureaucracies. If they do happen to have a college degree, it's most likely in sociology, which is the stupidest, most PC degree out there.

"Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he gets older he will not depart from it "

& the way the Government wishes the children to go
.......is to growup into a compliant, obedient little Zombies

So - Zero Tolerance makes perfect sense in a Police State
One that will make Orwell’s Dystopia look like a Beach Party

Hell ! - even adults are being trained
Try & get on a plane without getting your Junk tickled or Irradiated

Good stuff. 19 years ago, the little girl child of a friend of mine was in class. "Bambi" was the film of the day. Near the beginning, where Bambi appears, the 9 year old girl announced "bang", loud enough to "disrupt" the class. She was sent home with a note from teacher, and this was in Utah!
I thank God that I am old, and I will soon pass.

Amen to that! That's one great advantage to growing old: we always have something to look forward to, and nobody is going to rob us of it!
