...are tax exempt for all eligible purchases? I had no idea. So not only are they given free money, but they can go further with that free money than hard working Americans can because we have to pay taxes on our food purchases.

What say you? I don't think that's fair at all.

So you want to tax food stamps? People who can't afford to buy food should use part of their taxpayer provided benefits to pay taxes? That's pretty stupid.

In NJ food, clothing, medicine are tax exempt and everything eligible for food stamps are already tax exempt, as they should be. This is true for 31 states.

So only if you live in Alabama or Mississippi does this really differ to a full extent from normal purchases of food.

Not in Florida. There is no sales tax on food or medicine here.

    They tax unemployment benefits.

Why shouldn't you recoup the tax payers a bit?

gov spending exempt from being taxed by the government? do you want them to increase food stamps and start taxing them

    - - - Updated - - -

why tax food, we don't, does your state really need to? sounds like a scam to get more tax revenue for the state... which would cause more states to start taxing food, means food would cost more for the rest of us.. is that what conservatives really want?

My state doesn't tax food, but we're talking about a federal program so your state may vary. I don't see anything objectionable about it though, since all kinds of public assistance is taxable, like unemployment benefits.

I think it's redundant. The program is tax funded. Each state and city have different tax rates, it would u necessarily complicate the system and make it cost more to administer, wasting precious money we could use to blow up brown people's homes or prop up the dictator who abuses their rights.

Besides, their allocation is based on what their food costs should be. If tax were charged it would just be included in the equation and they would be able to get the same amount of food.

Unemployment benefits are contribution based and unemployment taxes paid by employers are deductible. Completely different system.

people on food stamps aren't given money. They used to be given actual stamps. No sales tax applies to a food stamp transaction because a sale is not taking place. Food stamps could only be exchanged for food that the government was actually purchasing from the merchant.

I think every state has moved on to an ebt card system. The banks pushed for this for years. The banks collect on all sorts of fees thanks to these card systems.

Of course now there are too many things that can be purchased with "food stamps" , but I suspect you will find that the banks are lobbying in favor of that too because the more that can be purchased the more they collect in fees.

Social Security checks are not calculated based on the cost of food. Increase the cost by adding taxes and the SNAP bbenefit increases. So what's the point? Other than making the system more complicated by having to account for different levels of state taxes.

First we didn't listen to Perot, and average working americans voted so that our workers living wage jobs were shipped first to mexico and then to communists. Then, after losing millions of jobs, and no longer making what we consume, to keep our working people employed, these people still require food and those that voted for the men who allowed those jobs to leave are mad about feeing those people that our elites took their jobs away in order to make more money for themselves.

You trip a man up, blame it him for falling, and then you want to kick him when he's down. LOL. You guys take the cake, and if you can, you will take the other feller's cake too. LOL.

We are seeing food stamps grow for one simple reason. You allowed the elites to ship jobs over to where they can exploit poor people, and not pay a living wage. I don't know who is worse, the elites or those who blame the unemployed for their own bad position in a gutted out economy. All of this was done in order that the elites might make more money, as if they were not making enough to begin with.

And if you complain about this, like I am doing, the patent response is...."socialism"!!!!!!!!

Too bad for you capitalism loving brain dead folks that your beloved exploitative capitalism, is on its death bed. Then what will you do? One thing you won't do is to blame it on offshoring and automation, for that would be blaming the right people, and you would rather blame the victims.

Depends on the state. I live in Florida, so food is not taxed here. In Alabama and Georgia, it is taxed. In Alabama, at full rate, and in Georgia at 1%.

Let them starve. That hunger will force them to work -- especially the paraplegics, elderly, and mentally ill.

Taxing Food Stamps in DE isn't a problem since we don't have a sales tax. (the last state legislator who suggested we impose one was removed in the next election by a landslide. In DE suggesting a sales tax is about the quickest way to commit political suicide there is.)

If people on the dole had some skin in the game in the form
of taxes, they wouldn't be so eager to raise ours.

What's stupid is the perpetual freebies and the people who promote it.
