Walmart’s low-wage workers cost U.S. taxpayers an estimated $6.2 billion in public assistance including food stamps, Medicaid and subsidized housing, according to a report published to coincide with Tax Day, April 15.

Americans for Tax Fairness, a coalition of 400 national and state-level progressive groups, made this estimate using data from a 2013 study by Democratic Staff of the U.S. Committee on Education and the Workforce.

When did Walmart start setting guidelines for welfare distribution? If GOVERNMENT keeps increasing the poverty levels, Costco managers will be on some form of welfare. Yes, there are tens of thousands of smaller or other like business that pay less...why Walmart???

How many Mon and pop's do you think there are paying wages, often making less themselves and then not even qualified for welfare? Up to 90% of Restaurants fail with in five years, depending on the area and no telling how many people have lost jobs, while Government regulation choke them out of business.

Then, who is forcing people to work for any of these business, established or start ups, even knowing they might not last very long?

$15 billion or so in net profit but they pay their employees so little they have to get welfare to eat. A sad example of corporate greed and a good reason for mandated minimum wage.

So cut off their welfare and they won't cost us a dime.

    - - - Updated - - -

Their employees pay more in that to taxes every week. We have a minimum wage. And higher unemployment and lower pay than Switzerland that does not.

That's because of the tax regulations that discourage people from working for themselves. I'm in sales, working for myself. It's tough at times. There are times when subtracting my expenses, I would qualify for government aid. But they go by your gross income. That right there shows that socialists don't want people working for themselves.

“The study estimated the cost to Wisconsin’s taxpayers of Walmart’s low wages and benefits, which often force workers to rely on various public assistance programs,” reads the report

And that's where the "report" is absolutely ludicrous. Walmart does not FORCE anyone to rely on public assistance. Walmart is providing these people a PART-TIME job (in most cases) and you CANNOT expect to be able to live off of one part-time job. If you want to be able to live and work part-time jobs then you're going to need AT LEAST two part-time jobs and possibly even three to be able to keep up with the same rate of living as someone who is working a full-time job.

Walmart doesn't force anyone to take public assistance. Those losers are taking public assistance because they're too (*)(*)(*)(*)ing lazy to get off of their ass and get a second job and expect the REST of society to make up for their (*)(*)(*)(*)-poor decisions.

It might be because Walmart is the second largest employer (government is first) in the U.S. that could easily afford to pay for their employees coverage.

Labor is what percentage of their costs? Multiply that by 13.5%.

The owners if Walmart are the same people that founded ALEC who is working for an Aticke V convention. Recently they doinsered a conference and Mark Levin was brought in to speak by COS, another organization working for Article V.

Do you think I have any reason for concern?

See how simple everything is when you're a right winger!

Not thoughts need disturb this simple scenario.

While right wingers continually defend driving wages downward, they turn right around and blame the people on the payroll for taking the low wage jobs!

It's not Wal Mart's fault that they drive wages down, because there is enough of a surplus of low skilled disposable people to take those jobs. And right wing philosphy dictates that those people are evil incarnate if they dare stand up for themselves.

I worked a Christmas job at Macy's a couple of years ago, and I met quite a lot of these people. Many of them had two jobs, and many more had households that strung together their income with a series of these jobs. They all worked hard, showed up every day, and often went above and beyond.

But in wingnut world, they are villians. (in the real world, you'll discover that many of them are your neighbors).

There is a silver lining though.

If Wal Mart and big retail continue pushing their employees to go to government programs as a way of subsidizing their payrolls (which is what Wal Mart does when they consul employees on how to sing up for food stamps and subsidized Obamacare), then one day they'll be factoring these subsidies into their cost projections.

When that happens, they'll be telling their lobbyists that they really want government provided healh care and the other benefits that taxpayers recieve in other developed countries.

So, be not upset when Wal Mart passes its employee overhead costs off on the taxpayer. Pretty soon, they, and their Wall Street friends will begin liking the idea enough to make them advocates for single payer health insurance and an adequate safety net!

Leftards seem to think that no one ever worked two jobs or tried to better themselves
in life. They think that the gubmint is their salvation and others need to carry them. Walmart pays the legal wage. Now if you don't like it, do not work there.

The "noble poor" leftist lie narrative is in abundance in this thread. Many large company unskilled employees are merely biding their time in part time work until they can go back on unemployment. It's a cottage industry in my area, and my business clients are subject to it. It's just another hidden tax and cost of nannystatism because business has to pay for the massive unemployment insurance scam. 1. Max out all government benefits possible. 2. Work only enough so as not to endanger any of the benefits or their amounts. 3. Mess up at work, perform marginally but not egregiously incompetently until fired, get back on unemployment. Rinse repeat. Oh but of course they all want to work HARD! My ass.

I have acquaintances who date women who are professional benefit scammers and this is exactly what they do. They know exactly how to game the system, how little hours they must work to get on unemployment again down to the hour, because there are hordes of self-interested bureaucrats down at the DFACS (which is crowded all day) extracting their own form of gubmint job welfare that depends on signing up more and more freeriders... erm "clients in need" for more and more benefits telling them how to game the system. We have large modern Section 8 apartment complexes (with pools and every luxury, not slums) FULL of these types, disproportionately women in my small town. They will flat out tell you that the convenience store or big box 15 hour a week job they are doing is just until they qualify for unemployment again. It is a GIGANTIC scam with tens of millions of scammers nationwide.

That leftists go on and on about these "noble, blameless poor" as if they all just woke up one day with a meth pipe in their mouth surrounded by cheap wine bottles is the height of hilarity that every reasonable person in this country sees right through. Are ALL people on these programs scamming in this way? Of course not, but a huge chunk of them are, and the left's steadfast refusal to acknowledge this is one reason people are getting fed up with leftism generally. We know why you all preach these fallacies over and over, because YOU benefit from them in one way or another. The patina of "it's for the chiiiiiillllllldrrrreeennnnnn! it's for all the hunnnnnngggggry!" has worn thin in the net age and is wearing right the F off.

Reasonable safety nets should be mostly local, not central, or this kind of game perpetuates and grows every year, strangling productivity in so many ways, breeding whole generations of unhealthy, dependent, inferior human beings. That's what we live in now, and that's the whirlwind that we will reap one day not too far down the road. Thanks for that, lefties, it's entirely at your govt-edu-union-contractor-grantee-lawyer-MSM Complex door.

It is an extension of your point. IF the Koch bros. are the owners of wallmart, and prefer part time employment because then they do not have to provide benefits, THEN how are they going to manage their control over Article V through ALEC?

AND, if they do have that control, which it appears by the video of Mark Levin, which has inconsistent statements, could extend to a massive scam on America, what are we all going to loose by sitting on our butts and letting ALEC and COS control the convention preemptively?

From Forbes: "Americans for Tax Fairness, a coalition of 400 national and state-level progressive groups, made this estimate using data from a 2013 study by Democratic Staff of the U.S. Committee on Education and the Workforce."

Vanishing Point was unable to comment because he was laughing so hard. An estimate--otherwise known as a guess or a lie--concocted by the Democrat Staff of the U.S. Committee on Education and the Workforce. That's laughable.

The goal for liberals is the destruction of Walmart so all their employees can go on welfare and poor people can eat less and buy less shopping in Democrat shops.

    This terribly not funny!

The company that boasts of "Always Low Prices" might have been better off heeding another slogan: Buyer beware.

As part of an increasingly aggressive campaign to burnish its image, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. decided in August to sponsor an academic conference to explore the retailer's effects on the U.S. economy and local communities.

And to make sure the findings were credible, the company turned over management of the conference to independent consultant Global Insight, which pledged to select papers only for their academic rigor, not for their pro-Wal-Mart bent.

When the scholars delivered, some of their findings didn't exactly cut in the company's favor. At the conference Friday in Washington, billed as "An In-Depth Look at Wal-Mart and Society," the retailer will be stuck with them anyway.

"To us it's worth the risk to have a real healthy discussion," said Robert McAdam, vice president of corporate affairs for the Bentonville, Ark., retailer. "We start out with a bias because we think we have a positive economic impact. If the results come back and they show that we don't have a positive economic impact, that will be a disappointment, but at least it's an honest look."

Wal-Mart critics say the company's willingness to hear dissent at the conference will be meaningful only if its executives decide to make changes.

"There's a lot here that requires legitimate listening" by Wal-Mart and actions based on the study findings, said Tracy Sefl, a spokeswoman for advocacy group Wal-Mart Watch. "There is a compelling empirical case being made about the scope of their problems."

The 10 papers are to be presented by economists, urban planners and other experts.
