One can only assume that a person playing offensive rap music will now be in trouble, right? Not.

College student leading racist sing-along (Screencapture)

The University of Oklahoma is investigating one of their on-campus fraternities after a video of members of the frat singing a racist song was posted online and went viral.

According to Tulsa World, the national president of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity said Sunday evening that the OU SAE chapter has been given an immediate cease and desist order just hours after the video appeared online.

In the brief video, posted on Twitter by a group of black students called OU_Unheard, the frat brothers can be heard singing and clapping along to a song with the repeated lyrics of “There will never be a n****r SAE,” along with a line about lynching, “You can hang them from a tree (inaudible)”.

The cease and desist order comes hours after OU President David Boren opened an investigation into the fraternity after seeing the video.

Playing a song and singing it are two different things, most people know that.

Two questions pop to mind: What kind of loser joins a social fraternity. I get business and professional fraterinities because they can provide networking and practice with meeting people in that field. But what kind of idiot has to join a frat or sorority just to hang out and drink. I can do that with my friends all by myself because I am an adult and don't need my hand held.

Second, it takes a special kind of moron to stand up and chant this stuff in the day of cell phone cameras.

Kudos to the person that blew the whistle (I am assuming it was a chapter member) and considering that SAE was founded in Alabama maybe people should think long and hard about joining it anywhere in the country.

What would they be arrested for?

Were the New Black Panthers arrested for voter intimidation, that is a crime.
And if you have to ask about the first amendment, you are truly lost in this discussion.

Saying what you want doesn't mean you can't get called out for it.

They are not that smart, racism is based on ignorance, stupidity and fear, there is a cure for he first and last ones, but the middle one is not curable, hence they simply are what they are.

Really, where have I done that? I will wait while you get your "stuff" together. Leave to a rightie to open their mouth and stick their foot in it, stop it, that is Palins trick and she may have a patent on it.

This is disgusting. The frat has been suspended which I think is the right move.

When the university is public, then yes it is potentially an issue of free speech. Private schools may restrict speech however they want, but not public ones, or those recieving public money. In such universities, even racist students have a right to study, as long as they are not overly disruptive. Whether that is the case here is open to interpretation.

......Their comments, which is what happens in countries where free speech isn't all the rage.

I see no reason why they shouldn't have been arrested, but this thread isn't about them. Focus.

No, just that no one is forcing you to obey PC'ness but that if you think you can say anything you want and not get some treatment for it, you're wrong.

People have a habit of thinking that freedom of speech is simply that with no reprecussions.

It's legal to remove the flag and it's also legal to say bigoted chants. But that doesn't mean the chapter leadership can't do what they want with specific houses.

EXACTLY!!!!!

The university is a STATE university. The chanting/singing was done on a CHARTERED BUS (private) encompassing a PRIVATE party. This incident was not disruptive because it was basically on PRIVATE property (chartered bus).

They're free to say, sing, and chant what they wish.

Edit to add: I'm watching the news conference, delayed because of rain. It's fun watching them backtrack and admit the students were practicing their right to free speech and "probably can't be dismissed", blah blah blah. It's hilarious! They've nowhere to go with this. As I said, it's a NON-ISSUE. Everyone is using the word "DISPICABLE" but it's all they can say. They know what the kids on the bus did was just have fun.

The 1st Amendment bars the United States govt. from punishing you for your speech, i.e. being detained, arrested, convicted, incarcerated, etc.. While it is not absolute, you're free to express your racially inflammatory filth without fearing grand govt. punishment. This is not a free speech issue.

and we're talking about a private fraternity, which has every right to remove these characters from their group.

For the millionth time, just because you CAN chant something like that doesn't mean you SHOULD.
