Tell you what. I'll ditch the Battle Flag if African American ditch Kwanza.

There are three races. Caucasoid, Negroid, and Mongoloid. An anthropologist can identify you years after you're dead because the races are distinct. Are you really naïve enough to believe that the ONLY difference that evolved between differing races was the color of their skin?

It's always amusing when some white liberal who isn't even from the south thinks he/she speaks for all black people in the south.

    Please read through the following;

Correlation does not equal causation. If you want a good book to read about this flag I suggest

    http://www.amazon.com/The-Confederate-Battle-Flag-Embattled/dp/0674019830

This book is recognized pretty much as the authority on the flag and indicates its origins of the St. Andrew's cross has nothing to do with Scotland and everything to do with avoiding outright religious symbology and has everything to do with the heraldic saltier.

You're obviously not going to accept that your position in #1 is exceedingly hypocritical... so for the sake of argument i'll ignore it.

But they had already made the constitution null and void. The north had chosen to unilaterally ignore provisions of the constitution simply because they didn't want to enforce them. They forced war because that was the only way to stop them.

I understand that you don't care because you disagree with the provision of the constitution that the North was also in disagreement with. However, you must recognize the precedent that sets. Now, if the federal government comes back and says well we feel that the freedom of speech and the right to bear arms are too dangerous to continue to allow to exist so they're not going to enforce them, you have no grounds upon which to reject it.

And if they do, let's say they just start seizing guns and no longer passing out gun permits and no longer recognizing the right to bear arms or if they shut down news outlets and websites which espouse opinions outside of the establishment bulletpoints ... what's the option?

Either you ignore it and effectively terminate your freedom of speech and right to bear arms while empowering the government to take more rights away from you.... or you have to fight back. If you fight back, it's not your fault. You're fighting not as traitors, but as people who are trying to defend the constitution that they signed.

I never understood the fascination folks had for flying the Confederate flag.

Seems to me it represents a mentality long gone and belongs to a country that barely existed.

Because the principal they were fighting against is that the federal government has no right to come in and unilaterally ignore or change the constitution simply because they don't like it.

    Jefferson Davis predicted it:

“The principle for which we contend is bound to reassert it’s self, though it may be at another time and in another form.”
    President Jefferson Davis, C.S.A.

I am a white Jewish woman and I really do not care which flag you personally fly or display, but I am a person of empathy and can understand how blacks could take offense at a symbol that has taken on a really negative connotation in light of some of the crazies that have used it to represent their racism and insidious agendas.

The swastika was used at least 5,000 years before Adolf Hitler, but if I saw one displayed in my neighborhood, I would not be associating it to those 5,000 years prior to Hitler.
That is really all there is to it

I have to ask...who does Kwanza insult?

Yes, if it means defending against racism and bigotry, I do think we can make our own rules despite what people thought centuries before. We are not a cult, we do not have to live by rules other people created for us, we can adjust those rules as society progressing, your thinking is like how ISIS thinks.

Not really. It's all about symbolism. The US flag might have been used during those horrific times, but it is now a symbol that everyone can look to as a symbol of freedom and tolerance. Whereas the confederate flag is a symbol of people looking to bring us back to their times of bigotry and hatred. So, this argument about what people did centuries ago while the US flag flew based on what the flag means now is kind of meaningless. Confederates got beat pretty badly and lost their efforts to be racists and bigots... it's time we put that effort to bed.

People's biology is still more similar to the biology of our earliest human ancestors than it is different; the evolution of humans has been a very short amount of time on the evolutionary radar.

At most the differences between races are like the differences between a Siamese cat and a Tabby cat. The idea that it's anywhere on the level of difference between humans and chimps is baloney.

If you study constitutional law a bit, you'll find that when states signed on to the Constitution, they ceded some of their former powers to the national government. There were no game resets or "I had my fingers crossed so it doesn't count" allowed. There is a legal way out of that agreement, but proclaiming "self-determination" isn't one of them.

So no matter how many times you're referenced to facts that the North-Southern war was about a lot more than slavery, your still going to tie a flag to a concept of slavery and racism? And no, it's "not" kind of meaningless if that's your argument against the Confederate Flag.then atrocities committed under this flag is also worthy of consideration. If you want recent ones, how about the chemical poisoning of 500,000 Iraqi children to which Madaline Albright said "it's worth it".

You don't see Liberals railing against the Patriot Act. Where did the ideas of Free Speech Zones come from? The idea that Liberalism, or even that the North is some beacon for peace and enlightment or "progress" is flat out wrong and a lie. The North can be, and in fact is more oppressive than the South ever was.

See the Reconstruction Era, as a gotcha era

The North believed it would successfully dictate terms to the South, and in so doing the Radical Democrats set the stage for the Civil Rights moverment to come and the modern day divide. To this day, Northerners have a holier-than-thou attitude towards their neighbors geographically, making this entire union an utter farce.

We're not a union, or even a country. We're four very distinct regions telling the other how to live, in the most laughable crude manner imaginable. To the rest of the world, this is an opportunity. The rest of the world's licking its chops while Liberals "lead from behind". But we're not "leading from behind". We're losing Liberals.

Was that radical Dems in the 19th and early 20th century, or those who sprang up starting in the 60's? Also, have you heard of a fellow named Lee Atwood or a president named Nixon who had something called a "Southern strategy"? Just wondering.

Being opposed to bigotry is despicable. Its saying that you want your race dead which is also very racist.

If the US flag represents diversity and tolerance then I hate it.

There was no hatred. That is just a liberal talking point. Liberals are paranoid.

Why? Because racial diversity is so right?

And slavery and was a favorite of the KKK. In fact the Confederate battleflag only flew for a very brief period in which slavery existed and slavery still existed, legally, in the United States after the civil war. The Stars and Stripes flew EVERY year of slavery and even after the Confederacy was defeated a slave in the United States would see the Stars and Stripes flying over his oppression.

And what would be different tomorrow if all Confederate battle flags were banned for state buildings?

And can you prove to me that crimes against blacks only occur in states that fly it?

Are you really this ignorant of history? The South did not try to take over the United States.

What sad tradition is being carried on?

While I agree that it is perhaps distasteful, I think people have to be very wary of trying to cover up history. And what is even more concerning about your comment would be that you imply that the federal government should dictate state functions whether decorative or not. The states should have more power than they have and the feds should have less.
