There are many people who justify an anti-artistic stance by saying that the modern world, or America, does not have time for the arts. This argument is completely bogus. If America has the time for right-wing talk shows, for political correctness, for tele-evangelists and for psychiatry, then it most certainly has the time for the arts, which take less resources to create than the preceding and demand less time from the audience to view. Arts also happens to be a positive influence on society. The same needs that people fulfil through drugs and alcohol, can be fulfilled in a much more wholesome manner through art. Unlike things such as drugs, art does not destroy the brain; and unlike things such as SUVs it does not pollute the environment. With the exception of a few huge sculptures, the resources expended on producing art are minimal; whereas utility realized can in many cases be exceptionally high. Art gives expression to what people feel and helps them to understand themselves and be healthy emotionally. Art gives people an experience of beauty that shows what is possible and that vastly enriches people's lives. Art becomes a flower of civilization that lasts long after the present era is over and by which civilizations become known. Friedrich Schiller said that art possesses the beauty of nature but none of its cruelty. This makes art a valuable addition to any civilization and a valuable addition to people's lives. So if America has the time for - right-wing talk shows, political correctness, psychiatry and tele-evangelists - then it most certainly has the time for a pursuit that takes minimal resources to create and realizes vast utility to the viewer. The more art is produced and viewed, the less is the need for much more expensive things such as drug addiction treatment and psychotropic medication. And the more the civilization is beautified to make it the best place that it can be.
Can't say I have ever heard anyone say, "the modern world, or America, does not have time for the arts." Do you have perhaps a source we can ridicule, or are you strawmanning right out of the gates?
Why should America have time for the arts... Perhaps the following may be helpful. http://www.aasa.org/SchoolAdministratorArticle.aspx?id=7378 http://www.ascd.org/publications/ed...v98/vol56/num03/Art-for-the-Brain's-Sake.aspx http://www.dana.org/Cerebrum/2009/How_Arts_Training_Improves_Attention_and_Cognition/
Art is no luxury, it is the warp and weft of all human activity, indeed of existence itself. Without art there is no science or industry, no achievement, no improvement. Art is life, life is art.
And yet every time there is a shortage of funds in any school system the first thing to be cut is Art and Music. I think perhaps we as a society are not giving Art it's due.
While I do not dispute that art is a good thing, I don't think the gov't should support artists.I don't think that being a patron of the arts is a governmental function. There again, I think the gov't's functions should be primarily defense: things like the military, cops and the border patrol.
If you want to do art, you are free to do it. I'm all for art. I'm against publicly subsidized art, outside of art education in schools and the caretaking of art in museums. - - - Updated - - - Well, locally, they don't cut Music. Music has too much of an organized following (School orchestras and marching bands). I do feel sorry for the visual arts loving students locally.
Avatars: Airmail Europeans invest heavily in the arts, and America needs to keep pace to better promote the rich offerings that gifted American artists (musicians, painters, etc.) such as Andy Warhol, Jim Morrison, Billie Holiday, and Bob Kane have provided. When I think of the vigilantism fantasies hyped by the American comic book, a special form of pulp fiction, I think of how special super-villains such as Two-Face (DC Comics), a rogue mercenary who represents jurisprudence paranoia, offer complementary counterparts to European fiction-literature icons such as Fernand Mondego, the diabolical conspirator and rival of optimistic protagonist Edmond Dantes from Alexandre Dumas' brooding retribution-idealism novel "The Count of Monte Cristo" [1844]. Comparing Two-Face (DC Comics) to Fernand Mondego (Dumas) perhaps illuminates how America's brand of pedestrianism art highlights Western investments in avatar aesthetics. This Halloween 2015, as you notice alternative or creative renditions of carved-and-lit jack-o'-lanterns adorning the porches of American suburbia houses, consider the value of pedestrian pocketbooks.
