Racial/ethnic discrimination in housing, employment, transportation, business, are all illegal. so shoulw race or ethnic based "safe spaces" on college campuses. there should be no classes, clubs, rooms, etc....thay specifically seek to keep out others based on their race or ethnicity. sure, there can be an African club, but they must allow whites and other non-blacks to join. otherwise, its Jim Crow all over again
by that logic, race/ethnic discriminatory restaurants, stores, employers, buses, apartment buildings, should also be legal.
What should happen with Chinatowns, German Villages, and other ethnic enclaves? Discrimination is illegal, but people still work around it. People also naturally gravitate to those similar in interests and whatnot anyway.
No, but they still manage to keep their enclaves as Asian as possible. If the Asians could help it, they would probably be more protective. And sales? No, I don't believe they would not sell to others, but that's the extent of their outreach. Today’s Chinatown is a victim of a trendy and upscale contagion that has plagued other ethnic neighborhoods throughout New York City, like Harlem and Bedford-Stuyvesant. -Justin Chan
I think if it is a private club, no problem. If it is a college or university sponsored club or space, then no. I do not have any problem with the college or university allowing these private clubs to meet on campus or in class rooms or meeting rooms either. As long as the university allows all clubs to do so with no exclusions.
The "poor wittle compwaining, ~20 year old wusses" cant hack life without having "safe spaces." What a bunch of BS! there are many ~20 year olds that spent their birthdays in a combat zone- and volunteered for it. The ancestors of these b!tches would be so disappointed.
I agree with the line perotista is trying to draw. It matters whether the college is structuring the activity or students themselves. We have always allowed private citizens to segregate in their social activity. If the college chooses to allow a segregated club, I am okay. If a college decides not to ( on their property) I am okay.
if a college building says "sorry white people, this place is chocolate only", I have a big problem with that.
So do I. If a group of students decide to have a party in Dorm room 107-B and refuses to let any women in. I'll leave that between the college and the students who live in 107-A. If Black students want to organize a Blacks only club and meet each Tuesday in the Commons next to the caferteria, again I will leave that between the black students and the owner of the commons ( presumably the College.)
It is illegal. No one has the balls to enforce it unless whites are the ones discriminating. It's what happens when people are, and taught to be, guilty for no reason. .
College uses discrimination all the time, its called affirmative action which is legal. They use it in admissions.
Racial/ethnic discrimination is not currently illegal in business or employment. There are some issues with large companies or even small ones if their policies spill into the public area, unless those companies have specific business requirements. The line between public and private there can be difficult to determine. But I can hire Joe rather than Jeff for any reason I like, even if it's just that I'm more comfortable with someone of his race/ethnicity. That's not illegal. You are suggesting a pretty big step here banning that level of personal choice. I understand your argument, but it would be a fundamental change in our laws. All those white only country clubs would become illegal overnight. Ebony magazine would have some serious issues when hiring models (and Playboy might be concerned about the precedent). I think it's OK to require open doors on the shared space of main street or classes in public colleges, but I'm not sure we should demand it in private spaces like clubs seems like asking too much for folks to give up the right of free association entirely. It's a big step towards socialism in this country that I'm not sure I'm comfortable with it. Then again, this country is headed there. *shrug* Maybe you're right. And I guess I need to get used to that unisex bathroom model too.
I don't think safe spaces should be banned, everyone should be able to use their first ammendment rights and not be physically harmed for it. BUT the way these so called safe spaces are used is a straight up showing of cowardice. The safe spaces should be a place where all can gather to address their opinion, but instead these spaces are made up to keep ANY opposite opinion out because they fear challenge of looking stupid or having to think outside their little box. In other words these safe spaces are simply "only my opinion, and others who share it, is allowed because I don't want to be proven wrong on any account" .
