Why. You'd see cronyism and corruption like you only read about now. That's why it was changed in the first place. - - - Updated - - - Oh well. Civil Wars have consequences I guess.
They were not in the Union at that time. Thus, they could not vote yea or nay on the proposed amendment. And Congress did pass a law that before any of the succession states could rejoin the union that said state has to ratify the 14th amendment.
Why do you believe that? The doctrine of separation of powers was intelligently designed by our Founding Fathers.
Of course it will go nowhere .. same as 95% of lame-brained red state notions and legislation. These people need a hobby .. give them all Duncan YoYos or something.
I believe we have "learned our lesson" and need that separation of powers. Otherwise, our senators act like employees of FedGov.
I thought they had no right to leave. If so they were in the Union. Were they represented in passing these amendments? Sounds like a cheap trick to me.
They were insurrecting at the time. They should have been "harassing the Judicature" for equal protection of the law.
Nullification attempt from the state that had to give up polygamy to join us or be invaded. These people never give up.
It seems like their intention may be good, though doing the opposite and limiting the number of their terms and holding them accountable for the decisions made while in office is the key. Directly electing gives no incentive or accountability for improvement.
When they seceded, they left the union. The South made the fatal flaw of firing on Fort Sumpter, which caused the Civil War. They lost and had to deal with the consequences of leaving the union. But the Civil War still did not answer the Constitutional question whether or not a state can leave the Union. And that answer is still up in the air.
Firing on Ft Sumter was not the cause of the war. No one was killed there other than 1 Union soldier who was killed when the confederates allowed the Union soldiers to fire off a cannon when the flag was lowered which exploded killing the man. So you think its ok pass laws on states not in the union? According to the 10th amendment they have the right to leave.
Firing on Fort Sumpter allowed the battle cry to be issued on both sides of the fence and was an act of war committed by the Confederacy. If the firing on Fort Sumpter never happened, then the Confederacy would have had an good chance remaining out of the Union.
Good move. One of the biggest mistakes in our history. The Senate is not supposed to be a political body but a deliberative body representing the STATES, not the PEOPLE. This would take the money out of it which the left should just love. This would also stop the mandates on the STATES that the federal government just loves to pass on them. I have been advocating this for decades. - - - Updated - - - What specifically is your opposition to going back to how our government was originally designed?
You're suggesting that our government was originally designed to discriminate against gays and lesbians?
And I suppose you want to go back to the way it was when a black person counted 3/5 of a person for a census.
Since Puerto Rico, Guam, Northern Marianas, United States Virgin Islands and American Samoa don't get to vote on laws passed by Congress, I think it is safe to say that the Confederate States shouldn't be counted while their representatives were not seated.
It is more than that, it takes the politicking out of it, it takes the money out of it and yes their incentive is do as the STATE wants them to do else they get replaced after their term. - - - Updated - - - I don't believe peoples sexual behavior was much of a topic in the design of our government.
So are they suggesting that the state senators WON'T be beholden to special interest groups? In fact I think it would happen MORE because they would be able to hide it better since nationally people don't pay much attention to state senates.
It was an act of war committed by the North. No it would not. - - - Updated - - - They are not states
They are US territories, which is all the Confederate States were until they were readmitted by Congress between 1868 and 1870.
