Muhammad Ali, the silver-tongued boxer and civil rights champion who famously proclaimed himself "The Greatest" and then spent a lifetime living up to the billing, is dead.

Ali died Friday at a Phoenix-area hospital, where he had spent the past few days being treated for respiratory complications, a family spokesman confirmed to NBC News. He was 74.

"After a 32-year battle with Parkinson's disease, Muhammad Ali has passed away at the age of 74. The three-time World Heavyweight Champion boxer died this evening," Bob Gunnell, a family spokesman, told NBC News.

An amazing man full of contradictions, talent. I was pretty young when he was still fighting, but his personality was larger than life. A truly global presence.

There are memorials at both his home and the Ali center here....the services will be held in our new massive sports arena due to expected crowds. I live in his hometown and he was always a big source of pride here. He will be missed and is greatly appreciated for being himself.

    He truly was the greatest.

In my top 5 of athletes. Most of us think of his fighting in the 2nd stage of his career (Foreman, Frazier, etc.) but his first stage (pre-banishment) was flat-out amazing.

As for the man, we will almost assuredly run into a couple ignorant losers here who will denigrate the man as a coward and race baiter. I am somewhat encouraged that we are half-way through the second page on this thread and have not encountered one.
