Jun. 4, 2014 The last of the 29 Navajos who developed a code that stumped the Japanese during World War II has died.

Chester Nez, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, died Wednesday morning of kidney failure, said Judy Avila, who helped Nez write his memoirs. He was 93. Before hundreds of men from the Navajo Nation became Code Talkers, 29 Navajos were recruited to develop the code based on the then-unwritten Navajo language. Nez was in 10th grade when he enlisted, keeping his decision a secret from his family and lying about his age, as did many others. "It's one of the greatest parts of history that we used our own native language during World War II," Nez told The Associated Press in 2009. "We're very proud of it." Of the 250 Navajos who showed up at Fort Defiance then a U.S. Army base 29 were selected to join the first all-Native American unit of Marines.

They were inducted in May 1942. Nez became part of the 382nd Platoon. Using Navajo words for red soil, war chief, clan, braided hair, beads, ant and hummingbird, for example, they came up with a glossary of more than 200 terms that later was expanded and an alphabet. Nez has said he was concerned the code wouldn't work. At the time, few non-Navajos spoke the language. Even Navajos who did couldn't understand the code. It proved impenetrable. The Navajos trained in radio communications were walking copies of the code. Each message read aloud by a Code Talker was immediately destroyed. "The Japanese did everything in their power to break the code but they never did," Nez said in 2010.

Nez was in the 10th grade when a Marine recruiter went to the Navajo reservation looking for young men who were fluent in Navajo and English. After World War II, Nez volunteered to serve two more years during the Korean War. He retired in 1974 after a 25-year career as a painter at the Veterans Affairs hospital in Albuquerque. Nez was eager to tell his family about his role as a Code Talker, Avila said, but he couldn't. The mission wasn't declassified until 1968. The accolades came much later, and the Code Talkers now are widely celebrated. The original group received Congressional Gold Medals in 2001, and a movie based on the Code Talkers was released the following year. They have appeared on television and in parades and routinely are asked to speak to veterans groups and students.

Nez threw the opening pitch at a 2004 Major League Baseball game and offered a blessing for the presidential campaign of John Kerry. In 2012, he received a bachelor's degree from the University of Kansas, where he abandoned his studies in fine arts after money from his GI Bill ran out. Despite having both legs partially amputated due to diabetes and being confined to a wheelchair, Avila said Nez loved to travel and tell his story. "He always wanted to go, he loved meeting people," she said. "And with something like kidney failure, it comes really gradually. At the end, he was really tired." Funeral arrangements are pending.

May 07, 2016 -- A Navajo Code Talker has died in New Mexico at age 92.

Navajo Nation officials announced Friday that Bill Henry Toledo died Thursday in Grants. Toledo enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942, helping use the Navajo language to outsmart the Japanese in World War II.

He served in the Pacific corridor during the war and spent three years as a Code Talker. Toledo's daughter, Sharon Webb, says her father never disclosed he was a Code Talker until she and her mother discovered his honorary discharge papers in 1972.

Webb says her father was active in the Navajo Code Talker Association later in life. Toledo also is survived by two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Tribal officials say he will be buried Tuesday at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe.

Code talkers made an even bigger impact during World War II, when the U.S. government specifically recruited Comanche, Hopi, Meskwaki, Chippewa-Oneida and Navajo tribal members for such work. The Navajo developed the most complex code, with over 600 terms, for use in the Pacific Theater, compared with about 250 terms for the World War II-era Comanche and under 20 terms for the World War I-era Choctaw. Even the other tribe members back home didnt know what this coded vocabulary meant, Meadows said. It was all gibberish to them. In addition to the handful of intentionally coded Native American languages employed by the Allies, they used two dozen or so others on a more ad hoc basis. The opposition is not believed to have deciphered a single code talker message in either world war.

Only the Navajo, with more code talkers than all other tribes combined, have become relatively well known, in part due to the Hollywood film Windtalkers. They received congressional recognition for their exploits in 2000, whereas the remaining tribes had to wait eight more years until a bill passed praising them for their dedication and valor. Honoring Native American code talkers is long overdue, the bill admitted. Pursuant to the legislation, a medal ceremony took place in November 2013 in Washington, D.C., with 33 tribes known to have had code-talking members in attendance. Origin of code talking

Code talking, the practice of using complex Native American languages for use as military code by American armed forces, got its start during World War I. The German forces proved not only to speak excellent English, but also to have intercepted and broken American military codes.

An American officer, Colonel A. W. Bloor, noticed a number of American Indians serving with him in the 142nd Infantry in France. Overhearing two Choctaw Indians speaking with each another, he realized he could not understand them. He also realized that if he could not understand them, neither could the Germans, no matter how good their English skills, since many Native American languages have never been written down. With the active cooperation of his Choctaw soldiers, he tested and deployed a code, using the Choctaw language in place of regular military code.

The first combat test took place on October 26, 1918 when Colonel Bloor ordered a "delicate" withdrawal of two companies of the 2nd Battalion, from Chufilly to Chardeny. The movement was successful. "The enemy's complete surprise is evidence that he could not decipher the messages", Bloor observed. A captured German officer confirmed they were "completely confused by the Indian language and gained no benefit whatsoever" from their wiretaps.

Native Americans were already serving as messengers and runners between units. By placing Choctaws in each company, messages could be transmitted regardless if the radio was overheard or the telephone lines tapped.

In a post-war memo, Colonel Bloor expressed his pleasure and satisfaction. "We were confident the possibilities of the telephone had been obtained without its hazards."[2] He noted, however, that the Choctaw tongue, by itself, was unable to fully express the military terminology then in use. No Choctaw word or phrase existed to describe a "machine gun", for example. So the Choctaws improvised, using their words for "big gun" to describe "artillery" and "little gun shoot fast" for "machine gun". "The results were very gratifying," Bloor concluded.[1][3][4][5][6][7][8]
The code talkers

The men who made up the United States' first code talkers were either full-blood or mixed-blood Choctaw Indians. All were born in the Choctaw Nation of the Indian Territory, in what is now southeastern Oklahoma, during the time their nation was a self-governed republic. Later, other tribes would use their languages for the military in various units, most notably the Navajo in World War II.[1]

The nineteen known code talkers are as follows:

Albert Billy (1885195. Billy, a full blood Choctaw, was born at Howe, San Bois County, Choctaw Nation, in the Indian Territory. He was a member of the 36th Division, Company E.
Mitchell Bobb (January 7, 1895). Bobb's place of birth was Rufe, Indian Territory Rufe, Oklahoma in the Choctaw Nation, his date of death is unknown. He was a member of the 142nd Infantry, Company E.
Victor Brown (18961966). Brown was born at Goodwater, Kiamitia County, Choctaw Nation.
Ben Carterby (December 11, 1891 1953). Carterby was a full blood Choctaw roll number 2045 born in Ida, Choctaw County, Oklahoma.
Benjamin Franklin Colbert Born September 15, 1900 at Durant Indian Territory, died January 1964. He was the youngest Code Talker. His Father, Benjamin Colbert Sr, was a Rough Rider during the Spanish - American War.
George Edwin Davenport was born in Finley, Oklahoma, April 28, 1887. He enlisted into the armed services in his home town. George may also have been called James. George was the half brother to Joseph Davenport. Died April 17, 1950.
Joseph Harvey Davenport was from Finley, Oklahoma, Feb 22, 1892. Died April 23, 1923 and is buried at the Davenport Family Cemetery on the Tucker Ranch.
James (Jimpson) Morrison Edwards (October 6, 1898 October 13, 1962). Edwards was born at Golden, Nashoba County, Choctaw Nation in the Indian Territory. He was a member of the 142nd Infantry, Company E.
Tobias William Frazier (August 7, 1892 November 22, 1975). (A full blood Choctaw roll number 1823) Frazier was born in Cedar County, Choctaw Nation. He was a member of the 142nd Infantry, Company E.
Benjamin Wilburn Hampton (a full blood Choctaw roll number 10617) born May 31, 1892 in Bennington, Blue County, Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory, now Bryan County, Oklahoma. He was a member of the 142nd Infantry, Company E.
Noel Johnson Code Talker Noel Johnson, 142nd Infantry, Born August 25, 1894 at Smithville Indian Territory. He attended Dwight Indian Training School. His WWI draft registration stated he had weak eyes. Great Niece Christine Ludlow said he was killed in France and his body was not returned to the US.
Otis Wilson Leader (a Choctaw by blood roll number 13606) was born March 6, 1882 in what is today Atoka County, Oklahoma. He died March 26, 1961 and is buried in the Coalgate Cemetery.
Solomon Bond Louis (April 22, 1898 February 15, 1972). Louis, a full blood Choctaw, was born at Hochatown, Eagle County, Choctaw Nation, in the Indian Territory. He was a member of the 142nd Infantry, Company E. He died in Bennington, Bryan County, Oklahoma in 1972.
Pete Maytubby was born Peter P. Maytubby (a full blood Chickasaw roll number 4685) on September 26, 1892 in Reagan, Indian Territory now located in Johnston County, Oklahoma. Pete was a member of the 142nd Infantry, Company E. He died in 1964 and is buried at the Tishomingo City Cemetery in Tishomingo, Oklahoma.
Jeff Nelson (unknown). He was a member of the 142nd Infantry, Company E.
Joseph Oklahombi (May 1, 1895 April 13, 1960). Oklahombi whose surname in the Choctaw language means man killer was born at Bokchito, Nashoba County, Choctaw Nation in the Indian Territory. He was a member of the 143rd Infantry, Headquarters Company. Oklahombi is Oklahoma's most decorated war hero, and his medals are on display in the Oklahoma Historical Society in Oklahoma City.
Robert Taylor (a full blood Choctaw roll number 916) was born January 13, 1894 in Idabel, McCurtain County, Oklahoma (based on his registration for the military in 1917). He was a member of the 142nd Infantry, Company E.
Charles Walter Veach (May 18, 1884 October 13, 1966). (Choctaw by Blood roll #10021) Veach was from Durant, OK (Blue County I.T.)he served in the last Choctaw legislature and as Captain of the Oklahoma National Guard, 1st Oklahoma, Company H which served on the TX border against Pancho Villa and put down the Crazy Snake Rebellion. He remained Captain when Company H. 1st Oklahoma, was mustered into Company E. 142nd Infantry, 36th Division, U. S. Army at Ft. Bowie, TX in October 1917. After World War II he represented the Choctaw Nation on the Inter-tribal Council of the 5 Civilized Tribes. He is buried in Highland Cemetery, Durant, Oklahoma.
Calvin Wilson Calvin was born June 25, 1894 at Eagletown, Eagle County, Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory. He was a member of the 142nd Infantry, Company E. His date of death is unknown. Wilson's name is misspelled in military records as "Cabin."

Additional Choctaw soldiers may have contributed to the effort, although records in this regard do not explicitly confirm it. Tobias Frazier, as example, often referred to a Choctaw Code Talker whose surname was Simpson, from Moyers, Oklahoma.

Navajo Code Talkers and the Unbreakable Code

In the heat of battle, it is of the utmost importance that messages are delivered and received as quickly as possible. It is even more crucial that these messages are encoded so the enemy does not know about plans in advance. During World War II, the Marine Corps used one of the thousands of languages spoken in the world to create an unbreakable code: Navajo.

World War II wasn’t the first time a Native American language was used to create a code. During World War I, the Choctaw language was used in the transmission of secret tactical messages. It was instrumental in a successful surprise attack against the Germans.

Germany and Japan sent students to the United States after World War I to study Native American languages and cultures, such as Cherokee, Choctaw, and Comanche. Because of this, many members of the U.S. military services were uneasy about continuing to use Code Talkers during World War II. They were afraid the code would be easily cracked, but that was before they learned about the complexity of Navajo.

Philip Johnston’s Brainchild
In 1942, Philip Johnston was reading a newspaper article about an armored division in Louisiana that was attempting to come up with another code using Native American languages. Johnston knew the perfect Native American language to utilize in a new, unbreakable code.

As a child, Johnston spent most of his childhood on a Navajo reservation while his parents served there as missionaries. He grew up learning the Navajo language and customs. Johnston became so fluent in the Navajo language that he was asked at age 9 to serve as an interpreter for a Navajo delegation sent to Washington, D.C., to lobby for Indian rights.

In spite of concerns about the security of a code based on a Native American language, the U.S. Marine Corps decided to give Johnston’s idea a try. They approved a pilot project with 30 Navajos and allowed Johnston to enlist and participate in the program.

Getting Started

The first 29 recruited Navajos (one dropped out) arrived at Camp Elliott near San Diego in May 1942. One of the first tasks for these recruits was to develop a Navajo code. The Navajo language seemed to be the perfect option as a code because it is not written and very few people who aren’t of Navajo origin can speak it. However, the Marine Corps took the code to the next level and made it virtually unbreakable by further encoding the language with word substitution. During the course of the war, about 400 Navajos participated in the code talker program.

The Navajo recruits began developing the code by taking words from their language and applying to them to implements of war. For example, the names of different birds were used to stand for different kinds of planes. The initial code consisted of 211 vocabulary terms, which expanded to 411 over the course of the war.

Now this I didn't know. Never heard a thing about it, though in hindsight one would think that Hitler's admiration of American Indians and WW I it would be odd he wouldn't send intelligence people over before the wars started, I guess.

I don't believe that Hitler ever had any intentions of going to war against America just like he never intended going to war with France and England he always had his eyes on the east. It was France and England who declared war in Germany.

Now Japan is a different story, the fuse for war in the Pacific with America was lit in 1906. Japan started drawing up their war plans to defeat America before WW l.

The only reason Japan declared war on Germany in 1914 was they wanted the German colony in Tsingtao, China < http://www.firstworldwar.com/battles/tsingtao.htm > and then they had their eyes on the German Mandate Islands in the Central Pacific where most of the fighting took place during WW ll in the Pacific. Japan needed those atolls in the Central Pacific to fight the U.S. Navy in the future.

After WW l Japan was awarded the German Mandate Islands (Micronesia Islands)

The United States knew that Japan would be challenging America right after WW l and two Marine Corps field grade officers started drawing up America's war plans for fighting Japan in the Pacific. Those plans were adopted in 1924 and was known as "War Plan Orange."

It was "Plan Orange" that was used to defeat Japan during WW ll.

I read somewhere that during WW ll the Japanese had soldiers who were fluent in a number of American Indian languages but not in Navajo.

Navajo Nation officials announced Tuesday that Joe Hosteen Kellwood died Monday at age 95. Kellwood was a Navajo Code Talker in the 1st Marine Division who served in World War II.

He was trained at Navajo Code Talker's School at Camp Elliott in San Diego, California and was the recipient of the Congressional Silver Medal for his service. The code talkers used the Navajo language to outsmart the Japanese in World War II.

In a statement, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey noted that more than 430 code talkers "answered the call of duty following the Pearl Harbor attacks." There was no immediate word on funeral plans for Kellwood or a list of his survivors.

near the end of his life Adolf is said to have stated......"If I had two divisions of Canadians
I could have won the war........ and if I had two divisions from the 48 Tribes I could have sent my
army home!"

He mean the 48 North American tribes.....

Yes, history carries the legends of Native warriors that properly impel fantasy of amazing human performance in violence, but the spirit warrior is unknown, and worked with spirit towards peace, adaptation, cooperation. The mightiest of all.

Navajo Nation officials say George B. Willie Sr. died Tuesday at age 92. Tribal officials say Willie lived in the community of Leupp, Arizona. He served in the Marine Corps with the Second Marine Division from 1943 to 1946.

According to his family, Willie served in the Battle of Okinawa, delivering and receiving coded messages using the Navajo language. He and other Navajos followed in the footsteps of the original 29 who developed the code and received the Congressional Silver Medal in 2001.

Willie is survived by his wife Emma, 10 children and several grandchildren. A celebration of life is scheduled Dec. 8 at the Presbyterian Church in Leupp.

3. There were 29 original code talkers. By the end of the war, there were more than 400. Native Americans from at least 14 other nations and tribes were among those 400, working to keep the Axis from breaking encrypted, vitally important information.

4. During the time they served, Native Americans were subject to many racist and unconscionable policies in the United States. Some states actively worked to bar Native Americans from voting by using similar tactics that were used to keep African Americans from the polls. In fact, their right to vote wasn’t secured until the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

December 15, 2017 — A Navajo Code Talker who used his native language to outsmart the Japanese in World War II has died in Arizona.

Navajo Nation officials say Teddy Draper Sr. died Thursday at age 96 in the small city of Prescott. Tribal officials say Draper lived in Chinle, Arizona. Draper and other Navajos followed in the footsteps of the original 29 who developed the code.

He was part of the 5th Marine Division, fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima and received a Purple Heart as well as a Congressional Silver Medal. Funeral plans were pending and a list of Draper's survivors wasn't immediately available Thursday. Draper's death came nine days after another Navajo Code Talker, George B. Willie Sr., died in Arizona at age 92.

Navajo Filmmaker to Start Shooting WWII Code Talkers Movie
2 Jan 2018 — It's no secret that the Navajo code talkers played a significant role in the Allied powers' victory in World War II, said Kody Dayish, a Navajo storyteller of Shiprock.

Navajo servicemen's complex native tongue was critical in communicating crucial Allied messages that could not be deciphered by Japanese foes, The Daily Times reported earlier this month. Their story has been told before in films, but it's never been told from a Navajo point of view, Dayish said. Dayish has wanted to tell his own version of the code talkers' story for some time, but wanted to wait until he felt he had the skills and maturity as a filmmaker to tell it properly. "We wouldn't want to disrespect the code talkers by making a film that's (unworthy)," he said.

It's no secret that the Navajo code talkers played a significant role in the Allied powers' victory in World War II, said Dayish, a Navajo storyteller of Shiprock. Dayish's film of the code talkers' story will be shot entirely on the Navajo Nation and will feature mostly Navajo actors.

After producing a number of award-winning short films and features, Dayish feels his family's film production company, Kody Dayish Production, is ready to take on the task. With the help of his brother Kolin and sister Kolette, Dayish plans to make his movie "Unbroken Code" focus on two Navajo youths who leave their home behind to join the Marine Corps. It will explore their conflict over leaving their families behind, the sacrifices they make on behalf of a country that has relegated them to a reservation, and most importantly, the depth of their contribution to the war effort.

The film will be shot entirely on the Navajo Nation and will feature mostly Navajo actors. The siblings have already completed the script and are looking for actors who are fluent in the Dine language since the most of the dialogue will be presented in that tongue. With very few surviving code talkers left, Dayish believes it's the perfect time for the project. "Now is the time to get a little deeper to see where the Navajo code talkers came from," he said. They plan to begin shooting the film in 2018.

Native peoples contribution to modern American needs recognition. American needs to realize exactly what the 1st and 9th Amendments are, how to use them, how important they are.

Hopefully First Nations people can recover their ancestors wisdom and use it to assure the continuity of life on Mother Earth as the knowledge was intended by the creator. By Americans honoring their sacrifices and contributions, which were certainly made to see the Creators law prevail, which the framers had the common sense to integrate in the constitution, they can feel a sense of fairness returning.

Mother Earth is now turned into a prostitute for the rich johns who control us all.
I'm no Indian but my European ancestors were not treated any better thats why we rick the sea to escape. it is not the race it is the elite who rule over all the world.

Hmmm, did they have any real choice to gain some influence and affluence? It was eastern gambling mafia that brought the idea and technology etc.

Why haven't you mentioned the 1st and 9th Amendments? Do you know their origins?
