Report: At least 9 dead in Oakland warehouse fire

At least nine people died in a fire that tore through an Oakland warehouse as people were having a party, fire officials said Saturday.

KTVU reported that another 25 people were unaccounted for.

The station reported that Oakland firefighters responded to the three-alarm fire at the warehouse about 11:30 p.m. local time Friday and were still on the scene Saturday morning.

Firefighters told the station there were about 50 people inside the two-story building in Oakland's Fruitvale district at the time.

Police told the station the building houses a group of artists and their studios.

The warehouse party featured musician Golden Donna’s 100% Silk West Coast tour.

Most of those who were killed were found on the second floor, the East Bay Times reported.

Fire Chief Teresa Deloach-Reed said firefighters saw no evidence that smoke detectors were activated during the fire and there was no sprinkler system in the building, according to the paper.

“We still have to do a more thorough search of the building and we don’t know the potential number of other victims,” Deloach-Reed said, according to the paper.

The blaze is already being called one of the deadliest single-structure fires in Oakland’s history, if not the deadliest, the East Bay Times reported.

“This is a true loss for the city, for the firefighters who responded, and the people who lost family and friend. It’s just tragic, a real tragedy,” the fire chief said.

Another it can't happen to us tragedy. That's why there are fire codes. When teenagers complain they can't have any fun this is why.

That's messed up. I hope they sort this out and find the guilty party, if there is one.

    Condolences to the families.

Gov. Jerry "Moonbeam" Brown formerly Mayor Moonbeam of the city of Oakland back when Oakland was the murder capital of America.

Another city run by liberals who don't enforce the laws of the land or enforce it's building codes.

Public assembly in an unsprinklered combustible structure can be a deadly mix.

In order to find all code violations in every building every day woukd take an awesome amount of inspections by an awesome amount of inspectors costing an awesome amount of money and disrupting an awesome number of personal and business lives. But don't let that stop you from turning every tragedy or crime into a political partisan attack because political partisan attacks are exactly the way we will make this country greater than it is.

So where were the city inspections? And it appears the smoke detectors weren't working along with no sprinkler system - again, where were the inspections? In a city that loves its regulations how could this happen? Aren't regular inspections of smoke/fire systems required?

Expect more regulations to pop up after this along with fines, lawsuits, criminal indictments, and yes, more regulations.

A commercial building with no fire sprinklers or smoke detectors. Something stinks and it's not smoke.

Yeah...but it would be impossibly costly and cumbersome to crack down on a building with absolutely NO fire protection and a staircase to the second floor (where most the deaths occurred) made of old pallets.

Some people just don't think before they post.

They'll probably focus on 5 round magazine legislation as the source of this problem.

People criticizing government by spinning a situation that highlights the need for additional government manpower.

the building codes were violated on this site and the city of Oakland knew about it..this site was being used to have illegal asian families living there..i would almost bet that the fire was set from burning pallets for heating the inside of the building..and the interior staircase was nothing more than stacked pallets..

Or having government manpower held responsible for their performance instead of lazy, impossible to fire civil service workers that have nothing to fear for not doing their jobs? I do realize that this would never occur to you.

Or an inspections bureau without enough personnel due to cutbacks in government services brought on by businesses campaigning for lower taxes and fewer regulations. This would never occur to you as government doesn't really need money to function, regulations have no purpose but to undermine businesses anyway and besides, Asians/blacks/Hispanics were involved somehow. I'm surprised no conservative has suggested Muslim terrorists did this yet

SF Officials Seek $5 Million To Protect Undocumented Immigrants From Deportation

    http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/20...ing-undocumented-immigrants-from-deportation/

That's in addition to what they already spend, cuddling up Illegal Aliens, which is close to $40mln/year. Do you know how many (*)(*)(*)(*)ing code inspectors can be had for these kind of money? Would you like me to tell yea? :wall:

People complained about people living in the building illegally, plus there were complaints about the garbage piling up. It's reasonable to believe these complaints would have prioritized an inspection ahead of other non urgent health/safety inspections. Now, if there were illegals in the building, or other liberal protectees, political correctness may have caused them to look the other way like they do when illegals are stopped with no driver's license, insurance or registration - they just let them go.

if you can think of a better reason why the complaints were ignored, I'm all ears.

I'm not really sure how to tell you this, but if you're looking for some kind of political answer (to a clearly non-political disaster) the prez is a Democrat, California Governor Moonbeam is a Democrat, and Oakland itself has been pretty heavily Democrat for as long as I can remember. So any political blame to be passed about can be laid solely at the feet of - yeah, you guessed it - Democrats.

If it means anything, I'm sure George Stephanopolous has already blamed the Tea Party for all this.

Either you are unfamiliar with satire, or you actually agree with the post I was satirizing
and think it would be too difficult for Oakland to shut down clear glaring fire traps like this old warehouse.

    Which is it?
