Both, in their respectful communities and positions, have put holes in the glass ceiling. Both have worked to rise to the status they are at today. Both from middle class or poor families who breathed only passion, and followed every breath along the way. These are the people both millennials, and the next generation should be looking up to. Much like Hillary Clinton, who worked her way up from the daughter of a small businessman to be one of the most powerful, inspiring politician, these individuals do not come from wealth, or name recognition in Hollywood. Much like Obama's inspiring farewell address last night, or Streep's noteworthy performance at the Golden Globe awards, these are the last, intimate moments to know what it means to be American. We've gone through a period before of where it was meaningless to be a American, that period was from 2000 to 2008.

But this thread isn't about the inevitable lack of value in being American for the next 4 years, its about looking up to inspiring, role models like Streep and Obama. Not to hate, or ridicule these elites, but to cherish and work to become like them. Their passion, and activism should be a inspiring jolt to all of us in these dark times, and work to become like them.

This is only true for people who haven't gotten over the fact Hillary lost the election.

Do you copy and paste what you like to read, or derail threads for a living?

This is about Streep and Obama. Stay on topic.

I fully addressed the quote I cited.
    Fully.

Ok. Streep and Obama can ASPIRE as much as they want, BUT they will never INSPIRE. Nothing inspirational about a woman who pretends to be other people for a living and gets paid outrageously for it and a man who has divided this nation terribly and caused more harm than good...

In the OP's defense, they are both very good actors.

Obama's tissue moment really tore at my heart strings. Oh man I made myself laugh again.

I just find it interesting that she could go from being one of his favorite actresses to "overrated" in less than two years. Wait, she did badmouth the messiah, right? Can't do that. Guess she learned.

    You didn't answer the question.

I can like a movie Deniro is in while still loathing him as a human being.

    It's not mutually exclusive.

    Actually, you're missing the point.

He could have bashed her personally, criticized her politics, etc. But he called her "overrated"...less than two years after calling her one of his favorite actresses. It's a contradiction, something the orange messiah does pretty much daily.

May I enquire as to what qualifies Ms Streep for role model, apart from rising from a working or middle class childhood? Because you know, MANY people have done considerably more remarkable and inspiring things. Could it possibly be because she bleated to the poor and the coloured folk about how they should feel about stuff - from her extremely privileged ivory tower? Is it because she showed her absolute contempt for the working class interest in football? Is it because of her overt deification of the arts? Is it because she played directly to the ego of the virtue signaller?

As for Barry - from my distant perspective, he seems like a good guy, out of his depth. Sadly, I think his position is all about race .. both why he got there, and how he's now being perceived.

Indeed. But she is overrated. And now disliked broadly, after that appalling speech.

Who dislikes her? A bunch of frothing at the mouth Trump supporters? Nobody, not even Donald Trump, cares about what they think.

He got elected because he is an excellent orator and displayed an incredible amount of insight as to the problems with this country. Unfortunately, Candidate Obama did not show up to run the country and President Obama never followed through on Campaign Obama's promises. I have no idea how he got elected to a second term.

Meryl Streep gave a standing ovation to a man who drugged, raped, and sodomized a 13 year old girl.

That's a "role model", to you?

Or he never really liked her and was just being nice during an interview.

She's the one that decided she wanted to take to the mic and proceed to go bat**** crazy.

Maybe she should have stuck to crying on que.

    You're welcome to show otherwise.

There's probably a lot of football and MMA fans who used to think she was a good actress too.

Opinions change on someone based on that persons behavior, and clearly Streep is getting plowed over her comments by many.

Trump is just one of the people bashing her.

Anyone who thinks about what she said beyond the initial tickling of Virtue Signaller pleasure centres. Anyone who listened with a critical ear to what she was really saying, instead of leaving it at the confirmation bias level of consideration (ie, none).

PS: I'm neither a Trump supporter, nor a conservative. I'm an ordinary leftie, who believes that rich white celebrities who tell the downtrodden how to feel, are (*)(*)(*)(*)ing morons.

I think there is a quiet embarrassment brewing, at having devoured her idiotic speech without filter or critique. I'm seeing it in RL, too.
