We know a college senior who recently interviewed with a company at a job fair on campus. One of the interview questions the recruiter asked was, "Are you proud to be an American?"

He said his answer was "no" and he didn't get an offer for the job although he said he was otherwise highly qualified for the job and had excellent academic credentials.

I related the story to my neighbor and she screeches, "that's an illegal question, they can't ask that, it's discrimination." To which I respond you're confusing valid discrimination issues such as race, religion, etc. with "opinion." I think her backyard is a permanent safe space...

If an employer asks that question they must have valid reason. My answer is an emphatic "yes, I am proud to be an American." Then I would elaborate substantially so the recruiter would understand my reasoning why.

"Are you proud to be an American?"

As opposed to being proud to be.... -what? Everyone is proud of something. But a question like that implies more than it asks.

I am not proud that we have an emotional child in the White House who is filling his cabinet with extremist nationalist white supremacists, corporatists, and right wing extremists who undermine the working class (90%). They all claim to be proud to be Americans, and that manifests as dismissal of other countries, distrust, disregard for them, vilification of them, and willingness to offend even our best allies. If that is the required flipside of being proud to be an American, then I am not.

I am proud of my Senators. But I am not proud of the Senate. Does that count for anything in your balance book?

I would agree with your neighbor that is a personal question, its subjective, not objective. It's simply not any better than asking a woman her weight, or for measurements, if she's going to be working in the lingerie section at Kohl's. It is discrimination, just to turn someone away for a subjective response.

If I'm to be brutally honest, Trump has put a dark cloud over my pride to be a American. I openly feel the obligation to apologize for Trump with every foreigner I come in contact with. It has made me rethink whether to purchase something made in America or not, where before Trump, it wouldn't even warrant a second thought.

You're drowning in a half cup of tea. You don't like the president. I don't like Justice Sotomayor. Nothing's perfect and the OP obviously wants to know if, on Balance you are proud to be an American. Your opinion is clear enough, despite the hedging.

I am proud to be me. Never really think about being proud of being an American. When I go overseas, the last thing I want people to know is that I am American.

It's a question every HR department in the country would tell you not to ask, but it's a legit question, there's nothing discriminatory about it.

Yeah, unlike race and religion, political views aren't a protected class.

Don't think I'd go so far as to say every HR department...

If it's a yes or no answer, I'll regrettably say "yes".

But the America of WW II is dead. I no longer fly my flag. The left in America is sick, demented, and dangerous. They hate traditional American values. To think that a huge group of Americans think like that saddens me.

    Patriotism in 2017 ... meh

I am no longer proud to be an American. I see nothing to be proud of given the state of things. I was proud when we stood for something. Now we have guys who get hard ons over the flag instead of the principles for which we stood. That is a sure sign that we have gone down the gutter. Nationalism is not patriotism - it is in fact the root of almost all war. Nationalism has been a plague on society since the renaissance.

What are you talking about? The left didn't drive us to use torture or invade the wrong country. The left doesn't tell you how to live or how to die. The left didn't put a pig who lies 20 times per hour in the WH.

If I was the job applicant, I'd be glad I didn't get the job.
I might have asked - "What does that have to do with the job"?
I can understand if the job was being offered by the CIA - but even then it wouldn't make sense because if someone was a spy, they would just lie.
I think it was an incredibly stupid, meaningless question.

Being part of a country that was politically unsophisicated enough to elect a buffoon like Trump as President sucks.

The USA has become a Worldwide laughing stock.

I am still "Proud to be an American".

I am a proud member of the 1%, I am a "Limousine Liberal", and I owe a lot to America.

But, I feel disgraced (by association), that our Electoral Process was hijacked by 26.7% of eligible voters who facilitated the election of an unqualified conspiratorial imbecile.

Can you name anything real? I doubt it.

Being proud of what we do and stand for is one thing. Being proud because of Nationalism is just brainwashing.
