Erm, that is not exactly made up story. She was born and grew up in german Pommern province, in Shtettin. But after her marriage and life in Russia, and her rule, she was identifying herself as Russian. After all, being Russian is more than just being born in Russia, or to russian parents - it is about culture, and feeling, and identifying oneself as part of the nation, and it is even more so nowadays, when Russia is not just some unitary state, but a federation, where coexist many ethnics, cultures and beliefs.

So saying she was not russian - is half truth, she wasn't born as one, but she became one. She had all rights to identify herself as whoever she wanted, but she chose to consider herself Russian. And I find it being a great decidion.
