ABC News May Have to Pay Billions of Dollars Because of “Pink Slime”

"In 2012, Beef Products, Inc., the manufacturer of this substance, sued ABC News for its reporting, which it called defamatory and misleading. The report aired a few months after McDonald’s, Burger King, and a few major grocery chains stopped purchasing BPI’s product. A few years later, the company’s revenue had dropped by nearly 80 percent. BPI has since closed three of its four plants and laid off more than 700 employees. The case went to trial this week in South Dakota.


So what exactly is the stuff known as pink slime? And is it as gross as the media has claimed? The ground beef filler—technically called lean, finely textured beef (LFTB)—is made by putting leaner meat trimmings (think excess trim below the hide, or other non-choice scraps) in a centrifuge and treating it with ammonia to remove any bacteria. It’s then made into blocks, often flash frozen, and ends up in grocery store meat aisles, fast food burger patties, and school lunches." I'll preface this by saying I'm all for responsibility in journalism and holding journalist accountable.... BUT, in this case.... If the report aired after so many quit purchasing the product, did the report really have that much influence?

 

Journalists love to put legitimate businesses out of business. It gives them a hard-on.

Why would this have anything to do with GMOs? This is a processing issue and has nothing to do with genetic modification.

 

Because it is about manufacturing irrational fear in consumers which is exactly what the people want to happen by forcing foods with GMO's to state that on the label.

It's called Truth-in-Advertising, not Irrational Fear. I don't want GMO tomatoes that taste like a wet paper towel, and I should be warned before-hand what exactly it is that I'm buying.

No it is irrational fear. There is no health reason to eat GMO vs. Non-GMO food.

Did you read the article? Just curios since it mentions this is the same chemical used in cookies and cheese and is very low concentrations that have been approved by the FDA.

 

I dunno but after reading that article I will be grinding up my own beef for hamburgers thank you very much. Gross. I'm sure it's fine from a safety standpoint but Criminy that doesn't sound very savory

 

Doesn't the case against ABC have to show definitively that ABC knew the reports were false and ran them anyway?

Okay, so not specifically related to GMOs, but the culture of hysteria around them.

 

So do you care about all of the foods that have resulted from radiation gardening in the '50s, or when natural breeding methods result in potentially toxic foods? Can you cite a commercially available GMO tomato?

Plenty of foods have higher concentrations of ammonia in them than "pink slime." Have you eaten any cheddar cheese lately?

 

It doesn't take much for a judge with an ax to grind to hang his hat on something tangentially related and whip him up some new laws.

 

It sounds suitable for pet food. How it got into human foods, I don't really want to know.

 

Get a Cabela's carnivore meat grinder. I use this and grind my own beef, mostly from a blend of chuck and rump roasts. Once you taste that, you'll never go back to store bought ground beef again.

 

Pressed and formed chicken nuggets and really cheap hot dogs are pretty much the chicken and pork equivalents to pink slime. You'd be surprised how tasty something can be when prepared the right way.

I don't need to. The FDA signs off on these things and the FDA laughed at people wanting mandatory GMO labeling.

 

Okay, so you admit the FDA acted hastily, as it often does when approving new pharmaceuticals.

 

That isn't the point. Does the meat really qualify as food? How is the nutritional value affected; critical amino acids, proteins, trace minerals...

Beyond being disgusting, beyond the fact that they have to use ammonia because they use bacteria-infested meat. how is this affecting the quality of the food as food? Does anyone even know? And if not, then what are people eating? It is a pink gelatinous slime. Is that still meat? Has it been partially digested through chemical reactions?

Sugar is approved by the FDA and it is killing people by the millions. Some scientists now say it should be controlled like a drug.

 

I find myself rationally fearful of eating anything previously soaked in ammonia.
