I'm a fairly new member here but have been on a variety of political and general message boards since 1997 when I got my first windows 95 Pc starting with AOL and then MSN , then Newsvine a negative experience and The NewsTalkers, a generally positive one. I am from the flyover part of California and was a Reagan democrat turned conservative and am generally conservative to this day. I like to seed interesting articles and comment on those from from others on both sides. I hope to have a good time here and engage in comity and have civil discussions even with those who disagree with me most of the time.

My father was very disappointed when I became a Reagan Democrat. When I explained I had to put 51% of my gross pay in a special savings acct to cover taxes, and was not making lots of money, he concurred that was a good reason. That 51% was to cover Fed and State Taxes, social security, etc. BTW do you bring a fresh opinion about our the longest unguarded border or just the usual laissez faire regarding I am in the O.C. by John Wayne Manifest Destiny Airport. I was born in fly over CA in the late 30s. I have seen our state go from a fine state to one filled with refugees and illegal aliens. Can't shop at COSTCO and not be impeded by all kinds of foreign people, and some probably are agents who are not here for our good. I had not seen Arabs up close until they came here. I thought we had our Chinese immigration during the gold rush. In my work environment, I am literally surrounded by Chinese. When they talk, they speak their language. I am too old to learn Chinese as my primary language.

Google, "over stay visa by nation". Don't take Moi's word for it. Hollywood Hills in the fifties - early sixties. Take a bus to Hollywood Blvd, see a movie. Hike the hills. Just off Barham Blvd before it descends into beautiful downtown Burbank. Now those hills and creeks that had tadpoles and crayfish are condos. No naked hills, I thank the Lord I have my corner lot on a bluff facing the ocean 1 mile away in the O.C. Whatever gets constructed around me, I have my piece of well placed ground.

I'm from Shasta County about 600 miles up I-5 from you. I live in the county's seat and biggest city, Redding. Pop. 90,000.
Redding, isn't that like the Bakersfield of the north? Valley country. Shasta, that of course brings to mind the grand mountains in the northern part of the Greatest State of California. Redding and Bakersfield are st opposite ends of the Central Valley. We are similar on politics but other wise different. Redding is literally at the very far north of the valley surrounded by hills then mountains on the west, north, and east. The Trinity alps and coastal range to the west, the Cascades and Mt. Shasta to the north and the Sierras and Mt. Larsen to the east. We are surrounded by forests, lakes, rivers, mountains and waterfalls on three sides and have a beautiful river flow through the middle of the city. We have miles of parks and trails, the Sundial bridge and not far away are Shasta Dam and Lake, Burney Falls, Lassen National Park, Shasta Caverns, and much more. Yes. Redding - surrounded by grandeur but on the Valley Floor. Isn't the air quality like the rest of The Big Valley? How about living upslope a ways? Above the inversion layer. The new valley population seems to be creating "Red Counties". Those counties are my faith that the Greatest State of California will be a Red State again. Oh, Okay. Welcome.Although you have no expressed thought about the laissez faire foreign policy & Moi Supports the Free State of Jefferson. Too bad about CalExit. Lord knows some State should know, "Freedom". The valley varies a lot. We get much more rain than the rest and have the most sunny days too. Most of the valley is around 100ft elevation, some much less, some more. Where we are it's 550-850 elevation. We do get pollution blown up here from the bay and Sacramento areas as well as agricultural burnings from Willows down to Woodland. E just had a solid week of 110-112 degree days. Two lakes less than 10 miles away and a river in town and no one minds.
I partner on some ranch land off the south fork of the Little Keweah River by Three Rivers, Calif. Tulare County. Before purchasing it I called Dr. George (Fishbeck) and asked him about the inversion layer. He advised being above 2,000 ft. elevation. How long a drive would it be to live in the foothills or mountains above that elevation? Just curious. Locally there is a high priced suburb on a plateau where the 55 north ends and one goes left or right on the 90. From the road one can look up and see they exist smack inside the inversion layer. Where the smog concentrates. Moi, I live in the O.C. on a bluff a mile inland with line of sight to the ocean. Due to childhood asthma, air quality is important to me. I choke up in pollution air. BTW does your thanks for the welcomes still count although my Welcome came after your thanks? Inquiring minds want to know.
15 miles east west and north will get you around 2000 ft on a major highway. Going due south one would start climbing the grapevine to reach that height. We have all the forests, rivers, waterfalls, mountains, lakes one can imagine a short drive away and some in town along with all the typical summer and winter sports associated with each. It's a great life here. Plus we have a city that's well planned, has most things other than professional sports that bigger cities have while maintaining a small town feel. There's not a city our size or bigger in the state to the west coast, north to Oregon or east to Nevada and south you go 160 miles to Sacramento to find a bigger city. Your area sounds nice. I live in Shasta County and only about 1/10th or less of it is in the Central Valley.
