    https://beta.theglobeandmail.com/ne...apology-compensation-package/article35538745/

The Trudeau government is poised to offer an apology and a $10-million compensation package to former child soldier Omar Khadr for abuses he suffered while detained in the U.S. military prison for captured and suspected terrorists at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The Supreme Court of Canada ruled in 2010 that the actions of federal officials who participated in U.S. interrogations of Mr. Khadr had offended "the most basic Canadian standards about the treatment of detained youth suspects."

The court said the action of the Canadian government had violated the former child soldier's rights under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and deprived him of fundamental principles of justice.

Looks like these values means nothing to Yanks, thought. Thanks anyway, guys - your barbarism (which you are still proud of) cost us, a civilised nation, millions.

Yeah I suppose this "serviceman" was just minding his own buziness somewhere in Utah...

The whole story is a journey into absurdity. Since when people resisting an invasion and defending themselves against the ennemy is a criminal offense, anyway? Soldiers are not criminals - that's not what I think, but it's the consensus, ain't it?

And that's just the start of the road. Nothing in there makes any sense, to this very day. You guys emprisonned and tortured a child. For years. Whitout any trial. It should have turned on some lights and klaxons, ain't it?

How come it came to this?

You would never had heard of this guy nor should we have to pay him one cent if your treatment of him had been minimally human, Merwen. He was underage, for crying out loud.

That your country still practice extra-judicial torture is the point here - this is only a stigmata of it. Many more to come.

I can't even begin to tell you what this has done to your country's perception wordlwide, and how much people it has recruited for your enemies. I can assure you that I don't look the US the same naive way I used to precisely because of it, and I hold the incapacity to close Gitmo as one of the greatest failures of the Obama administration, much more than overblown benghazi or her damn e-mails.

And Obama was unable to close Gitmo.....why? Because of America's rightwing lunatic fringe. Who think they're going to be beheaded on any given night.

From what I read, his father was a terrorist and friend of OBL. The kid was radicalized and convicted of 5 charges including killing a soldier. He was also interrogated at Gitmo by Canadians. If your country wants to REWARD terrorism, that's YOUR problem.

Today's reality is that our troops, after centuries, are now called "warriors." And the other guys defending their homes from white invaders from the other side of the world? They're criminal terrorists, a phrase coined from the Eagle's Nest in Germany. Thanks, Dubya Bush, for these changes. Oh wait, he never happened.

My understanding is that the Canadian government is paying him to compensate him for the actions of Canadian govt. officials.

"The court said the action of the Canadian government had violated the former child soldier's rights under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and deprived him of fundamental principles of justice."

Americans now love torture. They can't understand a humanitarian country. We crave war and death and making big money from it.

That's true. However it wouldn't be that way if his treatment wasn't so notoriously terrible. If he was detained and judged according to decency for an individual of that age, I doubt compensations would be as high - if at all.

    HE WAS A KID!!!!!!!

If he had sex with a woman the woman would be charged with RAPE. He couldn't get a drivers license. Yet he is to be villified as a terrorist because he was politically indocrinated by his family despite not being intellectually or emotionally mature enough to make his own legal decisions.

Seems morality and legality are entirely flexible when the subject turns to terrorism, political ideology, and other people's religion.

Rewarding terrorism..... what a completely stupid AND ignorant statement.

that is entirely correct. A fact completely lost on some Americans as it seems to be far too nuanced to comprehend.

OK--I looked up the article. He was 15 at the time he murdered a medic, and was severely wounded himself. If he hadn't been imprisoned he would probably have died of his wounds.

    Live and learn.

IMO anyone 12 or older is responsible for their actions, and some kids can be held accountable much younger than that. He certainly deserves no apology--nor any "compensation", either. This is an outrage.

It's a rip off for the average citizen. Just another Leftist ideology-driven money redistribution.

If you think we are fighting bakers and bankers in Afghanistan, that the locals are coming out of their huts with AK's to fight us, you're quite foolish.

BTW, the Germans we captured didn't get a trial, neither did the Japanese or Italians ... was that barbarism too?

What a farce ... 0bama could have closed GTMO anytime he wanted. The problem is where do you sent the inmates?

Their home countries don't want them and we can't send them back to the battlefield.

Closing GTMO was always a hoax 0bama used to fool his supporters.

Yeah, and the current Trudeau govt there seems to enjoy their tax schemes, I.e. current "carbon tax", tax grab.
