New poll reveals how most Americans feel about Confederate statues

A new poll released Thursday shows a majority of Americans want to keep Confederate statues in place to “honor” fallen leaders of the South.

According to an NPR/PBS Newshour/Marist poll, which was conducted among 1,125 U.S. citizens by phone Aug. 14-15, the overwhelming majority — 62 percent — want the monuments to remain while a much smaller share of Americans — 27 percent — want them removed.

POLL: Most Black Americans Don’t Want Confederate Statues Removed

Most black Americans do not think Confederate statues should be removed because they are offensive, a Marist poll released Thursday found.

Forty-four percent of African Americans believe the Confederate statues should stay in place, while 11 percent said they’re unsure. The remaining 40 percent of African Americans polled said the statues should be removed.

    MY COMMENT:

Notice how few black anti-statue protesters there are in these protests? Nearly all are white people. That is because most blacks recognize just how petty this fake outrage is - and because there is NOTHING in it for blacks to devote energy towards battling forgotten statues. In a sense, it is the Democratic Party declaring they will continue to DO nothing for blacks other than try to manipulate and patronize them in the most trivial ways.

Nothing is more pathetic than white "progressives" who pretend they are black civil rights protesters in fake outrage because the MSM told them to go protest so they can get good film coverage for media ratings.

Virtually NO ONE cares about the Confederate statues, most people think they are just fine as historic artifacts, and even most black people say they don't care and leave the statues alone. The vast majority of Americans see the anti-statue protesters and ranting as just malcontent troublemakers trying to stir up hate and conflict, since that is all it is.

Ask 1000 people what they most care about politically in terms of government, and not 1 would say "Confederate statues." Yet that now is the #1 effort by the Democratic Party - something no one seriously cares about.

Once again, the Democratic Party in folding in on itself has picked an especially losing issue in their non-stop quest for racial segregation and racial social conflict. They are desperate to get black people to hate white people. But, then, that is how the Democratic Party was created and what they do in every election - race-baiting from one direction and then the opposite direction.

This also is why the Democrats are losing Democrat held offices by the hundreds, have lost most state governments and lost all branches of the Federal government. The Democratic Party is reducing itself to only localized power in some areas, nothing else.

Every one of Michelangelo's statues have been moved from their original locations. Hardly the end of the world.

You mean moved after all the protests, correct?

Actually, what you posted is false of course. They have not all been moved from their original locations. Many remain exactly in the cathedrals where they were placed originally.

We could really use some more statues/monuments of people who fought the United States and lost. Perhaps Hitler, Tojo, maybe a young Kamakazi pilot. The list could be endless.

Certainly more would not hurt if done properly. Such statues serve as a reminder of how totalitarian autocrats can take advantage when the sheep become passive and ignorant .... like now.

You probably hit the nail on the head. I surmise that any black people standing around probably recognized the wussy prog kid stomping the statue as the kid they'd known all through school as a racist ass.

You'd have a point if the South was not part of the United States and if the US government had ever recognized it as another country.

It is significant that the majority of Americans - vast majority - oppose this history-erasure triviality of the Democratic Party.

In keeping with the theme that these statues are being removed because of slavery, perhaps we should remove all statues of Native Americans because they owned slaves. On top of that, no more faces on stamps, no more tax free casinos, remove their names from sports teams because no one is going to support slave owners, and finally rename all states, counties and cities which were named using Indian jargon because no on wants to be associated with slave owners, right?

Oh, and how many more times does it need to be said that Mohammad owned slaves. Kiss that religion good bye.

The important issue here is not about statues. This is about hate groups - white nationalists, KKK, Nazis, white supremacists, or whatever else they want to call themselves at the moment.

In the locations where they rally around symbols of the old South to promote racial hate, those symbols might be caught up in the rejection of those ideas.

Let's remember that in 1956 Georgia, in a fit of racial hatred, added the stars and bars as the major element of their flag as an expression of their "ideals". Obviously, that is not consistent with America's fundamental beliefs, so it was removed.

If they want to make some statue, banner, or whatever a symbol and rallying point of their anti-American beliefs, they CAN succeed in causing those elements to be removed.

And, if they peacefully demonstrate, even on their own land, we open fire at them with rubber bullets - while letting these Nazis march carrying assault rifles.

That's because the Native Americans are the losers.

That is the proper way to treat losers.

I mean, I certainly disdain white supremacy as I disdain all hate groups, including bullies and shamers.

But your facts are fuzzy. The "ideals" of the South was not about racism. The South was about pursuing their wealth at any human cost, and without government interference. Had there never been a Civil War, I suspect the industrial revolution would have ended slavery on its own, just because it is so much more efficient. Actually we are facing the same threat from robotics today.

White supremicists are not only hateful, but deeply ignorant - by association, they sully everything they focus on. When they rally around a statue (even though if the statue of Gen Lee could come alive he would have shot them all dead) we all look at the statue and transfer the KKK hate onto Lee. It is really inappropriate. In a way, we give the white supremists the upper hand by reacting to every symbol they cling to.

That would come as a surprise to many Americans.

You could not possibly be more wrong about the formative basis for the CSA.

From the "cornerstone" speech by the VP of the Confederacy upon taking office:
"Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite ideas; its foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery, subordination to the superior race, is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth. This truth has been slow in the process of its development, like all other truths in the various departments of science."

And, I totally reject the idea that we should FAIL to address injustice until such time as it is economically expedient to do so. Where the heck did THAT idea come from, anyway???

As for symbols, this is nothing new. For example, the swastika was not original with the Nazis, nor does it's history include only evil such as was added by the Nazis.

Today, when I see the stars and bars I certainly do NOT think of valor or bravery. Sorry. Too many have used it for the very opposite of anything that an American should tolerate.

Georgia added it to their flag in 1956 for the purpose of demonstrating their white supremacist ideals. For decades it was flown by the KKK and other groups as they carried out their murderous intent - a longer period of time than the less than 5 years of the civil war itself - plus the fact that the secession that war was fought over was founded on slavery as per the documents of secession by several of the states.

Claiming today that it really is a symbol of brave soldiers fighting in service to their country is a difficult argument to make.

I don't think that. I am trying to get a principle out of you. If it was wrong to not attack in Charlottesville then is was right to attack the Native Americans.

    Do you agree?

Myself, I don't think we should attack losers. It indicates a lack of faith in ourselves. I suspect many on the Left do lack faith in their rightness.

Thanks to friend who found this:
A discussion of the idea that toppling statues has merit in advancing your cause. Short answer: it doesn't.

Why remember 1956? Why not1923, 1874 or 1803? The Democrats want the 1950s back?

    From the article above:

"Illegally pulling down statues of Confederate soldiers and taking videos of “brave” unemployed liberal arts major social justice warriors kicking the Confederate soldier is what passes for activism in today’s warped society. Liberal mayors and city councils across the south are falling all over themselves wasting time and taxpayer money to remove statues of Confederate generals to appease the left and make a display of how anti-racist they can be. Meanwhile, their cities are bankrupt, their infrastructure is decaying, black crime is rampant and their education systems matriculate functionally illiterate deranged snowflakes into society.

    [IMG][IMG]

These courageous left wing politicians, like the mayor of New Orleans, have statues removed in the middle of the night to avoid protests by those who understand you cannot erase history by removing statues and names. In a hysterical development, Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh on Monday said in a statement she intended to move forward in removing several city statutes, including those of Lee and Stonewall Jackson. I suppose the soaring murder rate, blacks rioting and burning down neighborhoods, crumbling infrastructure, failing schools, and white flight is due to a few Confederate statues. It’s good to see this diverse mayor has her priorities in order."

Yes - 1956 was before the racists moved to the Republican party in the realignment, which took place over a number of years - not that there aren't still some racists in the Democratic party, too, but they are an inconsequential minority, obviously.

Yes - one could mention other years where civil war icons were used to promote a racist direction. I just mentioned one as an example.

Interesting, this makes me even more frustrated about how badly people are pushing for this.

You gotta love how "But the polls say so!" only matters when it is an issue you support
