    http://www.thedailybeast.com/trump-s-afghanistan-war-plan-fight-forever-and-call-it-victory

I will start by noting that Trump is in the unenviable position of trying to "win" in a situation that is nearly unwinnable. And that situation was to try and find a method of announcing a military strategy in Afghanistan which is desired by the generals - like John Kelly, Jim Mattis, Joe Dunford and HR McMaster, but palatable to his base. Fresh off the reacquisition of Steve Bannon, Breitbart appears to have rejected Trump's effort at splitting the baby with a headline (now deleted) that told its readers to brace for the "Forever War."

Part of the reason that Trump's base will have a difficult time accepting his flip flop is that Trump's "clear definition" of victory is, "attacking our enemies, obliterating ISIS, crushing al Qaeda, preventing the Taliban from taking over Afghanistan, and stopping mass terror attacks against American before they emerge." It does not take a rocket scientist to recognize that victory, as defined by Trump, will be a rather lengthy process. A process that was not accomplished by a 100,000 troop surge under Obama, but supposedly can be accomplished with a much more modest troop increase (estimated at around 5000).

I am reminded of George W. Bush's decision on stem cell research. He also attempted to split the metaphorical baby with that plan of allowing ongoing stem cell lines to continue, but preventing the creation of new lines. Neither aisle of the political spectrum was particularly happy with that decision and I imagine the result will be the same here.

    OP

There's some Pentagon talking head being interviewed on Today right now - he just said Trump is doing the right thing, and it's good to know he has some 'competent advisers'; around him. FFS!!!!!! WTF is going on over there????????

The Daily Beast is babbling stupidity

Trump "took ownership" of the war the day he was sworn in.

So the lib policy of sticking their heads in the sand as if there were no war will not work

Like the man said, "Lead, follow, or get out of the way"

    and trump is leading

I think Afghanistan is a 'Forever War' because the Talibs will never allow you to leave; but your administration is too dumb to realise it. Well they must be, because instead of facing up to the fact the Taliban are consistently winning and running rings around the US, your admin keeps going back for more of the same? How ****ing stupid is that!!!

    Ahhrgh!

These 2 sub forum of "Latest US & World News" and this here "Current events" are to close together for the same things to post... what is at least the difference between both?

Anyway, I still opened "Latest US & World News" a new thread about same issue a few minutes ago...

    http://www.politicalforum.com/index...hat-did-he-tell-during-election-again.512848/

So I quote my opinion written there into here...

Hmm. I came away from his speech with the impression that there would be clear objectives, durations, and goals set, there would be adjustments made to ROE to make those objectives achievable, and that none of the details of those would be made public. All that seems like the right approach to me.

The Pentagon is what it is. Defense contractors need money, weapon manufacturers need money, etc. Just when we thought we got rid of the neoconservative warring machine of death, they've somehow made a comeback.

If one thought we were voting against the establishment, we were deceived.

Duration now, will be solely based off of military assessment of success.

    Destroyed Targets.

Our Vietnam vets remember the operations as "Search & Destroy".

Now, let's see how much longer, until we're ******* deep in cluster-**** again.

Hopefully Trump showing Kim Jong that he's not screwing around will make Kim Jong think twice of any provocations. He should look to ending his dictatorship and feeding the North Korean people.

Wait a moment ... The USA asked the complete NATO after 9/11 for help and to go into Afghanistan to fight Al Qaida and Taliban and to support the re-building of the country ... what they did and loose also soldiers there and now your reaction is this?

And you agree also with the flip flop of Trump about Afghanistan?

Just look at the numbers of refugees those NATO countries ended up with as well, & how that's working out!

Further participation in any escalation would ensure devastation from the Islamic Nations.
