Parts of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) will never fully recover from repeated bleaching of its corals, caused by spikes in the water temperature, scientists say.

    Key points:
    • Repeated bleaching means many corals do not have time to recover
    • Even pristine reefs are not immune
    • Researchers call for tough action on global warming to save Great Barrier Reef
Terry Hughes of James Cook University and colleagues analysed the impact of three major bleachings in the past two decades on Australia's reef.

The research confirmed last year's event, which also affected reefs in places like Japan and parts of the Caribbean, was the worst on record.

With even the most pristine areas affected by heat, the researchers warned tough action on global warming was needed to ensure the reef's future.

    "
Globally these events have become the new normal, and the time between them is getting shorter and shorter," Dr Hughes said.

A question to those who do not believe in global warming

What do you think is causing the death of the reefs is it

    A) conspiracy by scientists to make more money
    B) ABU. Anybody But US
    C) Obama did it
    D) Don't care because it will not affect me in any way
    E) What problems??

Likely it is too late to save coral reefs. Ocean temps will continue to rise even is we stop everything we are doing right now and go back to first century technology. Much of the ocean life will be adversely effected (already is) and we can only prepare at this point. Life on land faces similar difficulties but the atmosphere reacts far more quickly to inputs than water.

As soon as scientist announced that they had discovered a 600 mile coral reef in the Amazon that shocked them it even existed, they declared it dying from global warming :hmm:

The coral damage in the Caribbean is more likely due to damage from fishing.

There is also a study that indicates as long as the ocean temperatures do not rise by more than 3 1/2 degrees (ie atmospheric CO2 rising 60% higher than it is now) corals should be able to keep up even with rising sea levels.

So researches call for tough action. What action? Oh, carbon taxes which ends up in the pocket of the rich. That action? While science has also said that if you cut co2 from fossil fuel burning to 0, today, the warming would continue for a least a hundred years. Since carbon tax will not happen here, why in the hell is land management not being used, by the world, and putting a halt to rainforest deforestation. Have any of these researchers EVEN suggested it? If so, prove it. This land management suggestion has been out there from years, from not climatologists but a physicist. LOL Stopping deforestation is not even talked about. What is the tough action called for? Carbon taxes. LOl

I smell a pile of bull crap, still steaming, quite odoriferous. Who is telling these researches who demand tough action that carbon taxes, which will not stop the warming is the only thing worth talking about. WAKE UP FOLKS. This is a scheme to redistribute income, from the middle to the top. Nothing more than that, once again a opportunist conspiracy. Not that warming is not happening, but they will only address it in one way, which will not stop the warming. So, let us reduce co2 levels, by adding billions if not trillions of co2 loving flora and stop removing the earth's rain forest. Until they do that, it will remain a scheme of opportunists, to make billions for people who are already filthy rich.

China's militarization in South China Sea harms reefs, U.S. scientist says
March 30, 2017 -- China's reclamation and military buildup on the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea is doing lasting damage to the ecosystem, and coral reef cover has declined by more than half as a result of activities.

this is total crap.. every coral reef is built on... dead coral. This is what happens on coral reefs. big die offs and massive regrowth.

Scientists: Half of Hawaii’s Coral Reefs Bleached
November 03, 2017 — Nearly half of Hawaii’s coral reefs were bleached during heat waves in 2014 and 2015 and fisheries close to shore are declining, a group of scientists told state lawmakers.

Military Turns to Oyster Reefs to Protect Against Storms
December 26, 2017 — Earle Naval Weapons Station, where the Navy loads some of America's most sophisticated weapons onto warships, suffered $50 million worth of damage in Superstorm Sandy. Now the naval pier is fortifying itself with some decidedly low-tech protection: oysters.

Scientists have said that even if we stopped all co2 production today, instantly, the warming would continue into at least the next century. So how much economic suffering would you like to create in order to stop what cannot be stopped? And how much economic suffering would you like to endure? There is no way in hell to supply the world's growing energy needs without fossil fuels. And what has not a damned word been said about increase flora by worldwide land management. I never hear the alarmists mention a word about that. They seem to be under the illusion that we can replace the energy fossil fuel proves with other energy source, wind, solar. But that is not possible. I see the alarmists as men jousting at windmills. And I see fear mongering and the ones doing it are not people on the edge of survivial, but people with a means. Which means, they will not suffer much at all so they could not give a damn about everyone else. This is just a new cause for people who have too much time on their hands IMO.

You want to stop climate change? Move to mars.

Change. Everything keeps changing. The only thing constant is change.

You can't dive to the same coral reef twice.

Battered By Bleaching, Florida's Coral Reefs Now Face Mysterious Disease
May 15, 2018 • Florida's coral reefs are being decimated by a mysterious disease. It comes after years of warming waters have bleached coral reefs around the world, leaving them weakened.
