Trump says Jerusalem is the capital of Israel

People are going to die because of the decision made by Trump today.

Trump formally recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, reversing nearly seven decades of American foreign policy and setting in motion a plan to move the United States Embassy from Tel Aviv to the fiercely contested Holy City.

The Palestinian militant organization Hamas called for "day of rage" protests over the announcement and said that Trump had committed a "flagrant aggression against the Palestinian people."

Hamas was not alone. The New York Times reports, "Mr. Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem isolates the United States on one of the world’s most sensitive diplomatic issues. It has drawn a storm of criticism from Arab and European leaders, which swelled on Tuesday night after the White House confirmed Mr. Trump’s plans.

"Pope Francis and the Chinese foreign ministry joined the chorus of voices warning that the move could unleash a wave of violence across the region. At a meeting in Brussels, Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson was sternly reproached by European allies."

Trump cited the Jerusalem Embassy Act of 1995 as one reason for his decision. The law was passed by a Republican controlled Congress. Clinton had taken the unusual step of not signing the Embassy Act into law once Congress had presented it to him but rather let 10 days of inaction pass, allowing the bill to return to Congress and automatically become law. The law was never implemented because of opposition from Presidents Clinton, Bush, and Obama, who viewed it as a Congressional infringement on the executive branch's constitutional authority over foreign policy.

Trump said that for twenty years Presidents had promised to comply with the 1995 law. He apparently was confused by the difference between a promise and a goal. Middle East peace and the right of Israel to declare Jerusalem as its capital has been the goal of every American President for sixty years.

Using tortured logic, Trump declared “It would be folly to assume that repeating the exact same formula would now produce a different or better result.” The decision regarding Israel's capital is a major issue in the peace negotiations. Trump assumed that putting the cart before the horse would achieve a better result.

"This decision is not intended in any way to reflect a departure from our strong commitment to facilitate a lasting peace agreement," Trump said, adding, "The United States remains deeply committed to helping facilitate a peace agreement that is acceptable to both sides. I intend to do everything in my power to help forge such an agreement."

That is tantamount to Hitler declaring after he captured Paris, "Germany has strong a commitment to facilitate lasting peace in France."

In other words, Trump is fully aware of the damage his decision will cause. He even issued this warning, “There will of course, be disagreement and dissent regarding this announcement.” He appealed for “calm, for moderation, and for the voices of tolerance to prevail over the purveyors of hate.” As is his custom, he thinks he can overcome the consequences of his decision with rhetoric.

The fact remains, his decision causes the removal of the United States as a broker for Middle East peace. Notwithstanding the leadership in Israel, every party to the peace talks can no longer trust the United States because of Trump's unilateral decision.

Trump's decision should hasten his removal from office. To preserve his power he is now endangering lives and property.

Agreed. I see a lot of articles whine about how Trump has upset the peace process of the last several decades and all I can see is "the last several decades". Time to try something new...even if it's just to threaten to move the Embassy and recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital.

Trump never made the choice. The choice was made in 1950 by the Israelis. They declared it their capital. What right does the USA have to select countries capitals? There was no Palestine until it formed under Reagan, to wit in 1988.

It was in 1950 that Israel declared it's capital city to be Jerusalem. There was no Palestinian government. They formed a government in 1988, well past the Israelis declaring their own government capital city.

America never should have held out on the Israelis.

Another decision meant strictly for his base.
