A true "mental illness" involves more than just believing things that aren't true and really should be part of an actual diagnosis, not pop science.

Is it allowable to ask if belief in Islam is a mental illness?

The psychology, psychiatry and mental health professions do not consider religious belief as delusional, unless other delusional (i.e., non-religious-based) behavior is present. I'll leave why the mental health profession makes (or is forced to invent) this distinction aside for the time being. Still, it is quite clear that the source of most religious belief is traced to childhood indoctrination from trusted adults, that continual religious indoctrination during childhood results in mild to severe underdevelopment of the brain's frontal cortex (including rational thinking, correct pattern recognition and evidence-based conclusions, among other skills) and that an increase of emotional brain activity occurs because of the related (religious) peer pressure.

Anecdotally, I observe that many theists exhibit stunted critical thinking skills, heightened emotional needs and an inability to think for themselves.

Such people are called "scientists"? Good grief. U-n-b-e-l-i-e-v-a-b-l-e. Poor world. And what is mathematics in their eyes? A kind of cancer? And arts or architecture? A psychopathological syndrome which allows to build unsinkable Titanics? What else do they find in human brains? A center for the english language directly besides the Chinese language so we have only to move a switch, if we like to speak a foreign language? ...

    OP

And this expert has only just cottoned on to that? I've been saying it's a form of insanity for years.

Every year this propaganda comes up in the forum. Its about equal to the Nazi "scientists" claiming the Jews were mentally ill and a blot on the German people.

You think this is "science" and then wonder why people don't believe you when you claim man caused global warming is scientifically proven.

Sure what's next? Football is a mental illness? Frankly, the stupid colleges brainwash people into believing the dumbest things nowadays. I bet the "scientists" probably thinks there's nothing mental about his desire to have a penis in his anus and does it regularly.

So 90% of the world's population is mentally ill? Methinks something's wrong with his theory if that's the result he gets.
Bullshit. I was the same person as a theist as I am now as an atheist. Did I get any smarter? No. Did I get any wiser? No. Did I change my critical thinking skills, reduce my emotional needs, or increase my ability to think for myself? No. All I did was change my belief, so your opinion is so much horseshit. "Anecdotally," I observe that 90% of all atheists have a "holier-than-thou" attitude toward theists, that they are so much smarter, wiser, and more logical than theists, but they aren't. All they really are is smug, condescending asšholes.
    LOL.

The exact samething could be said about atheists.....just change the words. The faith that we just arrived here by chance is a mental illness.

So you now sat that you are a "neuroscientist" claiming 99% of all people who have ever lived were all mentally ill?

He very clearly stated it "Should Not" be considered mental illness in and of itself.

No. Please read my post. I was criticizing the OP, not supporting it.

    My mistake. Sorry.

I agree the claim is absurd.
:truce:Sorry, my mistake. I agree with your criticism.

Hope I don't cause any heart attacks for this likely unprecedented forum admission of being in the wrong.

Hell, I've been saying that for over a decade now.

There's no question that a person has to be mentally ill to swallow this fantastical hypothesis that some invisible god is responsible for all creation when there is absolutely zero credible or compelling evidence to support such a fantastical claim.

Religion is very likely the biggest scam in human history...

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you didn't have all the answers? Well....if you ever do, I hope you can find "Faith".
