NICS checks prevent tens of thousands of people every year from illegally buying guns from gun dealers. And you think this is a waste of time.

Yet less than 0.02% of them are ever put in prison for attempting that purchase, leaving free to acquire guns easily and illegally through straw purchases, corrupt FFLs, illegal street sellers and theft.

If the law was actually enforced and those who lied on the Form 4473 were actually arrested and convicted, tens of thousand of criminals would be in jail, unable to buy a gun through any means.

That's what we want. Without enforcement, background checks are merely security theater.

No arrests need be made. They are preventative in nature. Make them universal and apply registration

 

I've done a background check on every firearm I've purchased from an FFL, and never felt it was harassment even when one took 10 days to get through NICS post-Sandy Hook.

Harassment is requiring a background check that costs up to $50 for a private sale. Harassment is requiring every member of a trust to get a background check when a firearm is added to the trust. Harassment is requiring a background check for a transfer between family members. Harassment is requiring a background check to load a firearm to a friend, and another to take the gun back. Harassment is requiring CCWs to pass a background check to get another firearm. Harassment is requiring a background check for two gun owners to simply exchange firearms for any length of time while legally shooting in a National Forest.

 

When that happens, then you can claim that background checks are effective. Until then, it's simply not true.
