Looks like our countries are going to take their distances now. I say good ridance - NAFTA just made the rich richer and the poor poorer. Even better, Canada won't have to indulge the USA no more on the international scene.

Congrats, Trumpists - you just got rid of another pesky ally.

 

Well, not so fast. Comments from Canada are a signal they won't be rolled, especially on the U.S. wanting to terminate the dispute resolution clause. We're at a crucial stage in negotiations.

Make no mistake, Canada will force Trump to cancel NAFTA. They do it for him and they won't cave into U.S. demands especially when they have a trade deficit with America.

There's about 25 state governors who aren't keen on Trump tearing up NAFTA either, considering the amount of trade that these states do with canada.

If they terminate NAFTA they had better reactivate the FTA - the trade deal between US and Canada before NAFTA, because about 30 US states benefit greatly from trade with Canada. Not that cancelling NAFTA would cut everything off, but it would do some damage. Trump has always said that Canada is not a problem trade-wise, which is an understatement. Canada imports more stuff from the US than any other country in the world.

 

we have a trade surplus with America of roughly 12 billion or 2%. That one helluva good balancing act. Gee what a crappy deal for america. Over time, NAFTA worked to bring the deficit down from a high of $80 billion in 2006 during the active parts of the american wars.

Canada just filed a series of complaints with the World Trade Organization on behalf of a bunch of nations including canada citing over 200 instances of American trade malpractice. Who knew other countries might know how to deal with bullies and ideological entrenchment. Trump sure as hell didn't.

 

There's no accusation of Canadians dumping dairy products. There is a claim, however, Canada is protecting high-cost producers in Canada from U.S. competition.

Five times we put tariffs on Canadian lumber and five times we lost in dispute hearings. They aren't dumping lumber and they aren't unfairly subsidizing production with low stumpage costs. It's about U.S. forest companies that bought up Canadian firms driving up prices in the U.S.

Yeah it would balloon the deficit. And cause the wasting of 100's of billions of US and Canadian taxpayer and business dollars and a big chunk of those tax savings US biz just got, spent on bureaucratic process changes associated with both trade and border transactions and the security that entails. A lot of US biz and jobs are directly invested. This a half trillion dollar trade relationship afterall. The damage would be huge all over a $12 billion dollar deficit last year down from its peak of $80 bill in 06. Total boob zero sum nonsense from a nonsensical administration.

As a citizen of both countries, I'm well aware of how Canada views NAFTA. I would caution Americans who see the advantage of free trade with Canada there is some dirt Canadians won't eat, so don't try to bully them into a deal.

 

If we try to screw Canada, we'll have to give a lot more to get a bilateral deal with China or the EU.

Yeah the services deficit is to be expected when it comes to economic integration with the american behemoth. It don't take a rocket surgeon to be a realist. That was part of NAFTA in the first place dealing with the strategic nature of our relationship. WE gots the resources, you gots da goods, afterall.

Yeah my comment on the american system sucking had more to do with the current state of affairs but on balance at least our system provides a far broader and nuanced political spectrum to exist which I believe better informs public opinion especially when confronted with the numerous consensus compromises all governing systems require. jus sayin

 

Canada has not dismantled their supply management system that protects Canadian dairy farmers with high tariffs. Trump is pressing Canada to drop the system as part of a new NAFTA.
