It sickens me when I see pictures on social media of so called hiunters posing with their kill. Where is the honor, the satisfaction that comes from killing another living being? In modern day America, there is no need to hunt for food. So, the point being it is for gathering food is void. Then you have controlling and avoiding overpopulation. When nature takes its course, the overpopulation of rabbits and deer are killed off in the wild by neighboring predators. So, the point it is a form of pest control is also nullified. Those two crossed out, it comes down to a matter of fun. To find pleasure in killing, there must be something g wrong with the person in the head.

If the laws weren’t in place, would you kill your pestiy neighbor and stuff his body if you could? We are all part of the animal kingdom. We are related to chimps ffs. Humans are the only species that kill not for necessity, but for sport. All other animals do it because they have to, we do it because we WANT to. There must be a inbred desire for blood in the human psyche.

Hunters are killers, simply in legal form. One step away from murder, and that is only in what animal they kill.

Doesn't someone kill the food you eat? That is an ugly business. And there are people who feed their families with wild deer and elk. When you start to look at this as regular food, it is no different than buying hamburger. It just takes a lot more work. "The kill" is just a trip to the meat market.

For most hunters it is about the hunt and taking the shot. I used to hunt and personally found that I liked everything but the dead animals. But I can understand the sport. Hunting can be quite an art. It is about knowing the habitat. Knowing the behavior of the animals. Knowing what signs to look for and what they tell you. How to get close. How and when to take the shot. And knowing how to shoot.

Hunting also strikes up some primitive instincts. After all, we evolved as hunters. Some men get off on this the same way others get off on football. I don't think its sick so much as primal.

Becoming part of the food chain. Our ancestors were hunters. Our closest living relatives, the chimpanzees, are hunters.

I had a friend who only ate meat that had been caught in the wild. He felt that factory farming was cruel, and he wanted the animals he ate to have lived a normal life (and part of a normal life in nature is to sometimes be killed by predators). Also, wild caught meat doesn't have artificial additives, it's lower in fat, and many think it tastes better.

If you want deer in America to be poisoned and trapped by farmers, you will oppose hunting. The only reason farmers put up with the destruction of crops by deer is that they can hunt them. Otherwise they would trap and poison them. There is also the matter of car accidents. An overpopulation of deer results in more car accidents, which can occasionally kill people, but more likely cause thousands of dollars of damage. Deer are not controlled by predators anymore. We have killed off most of the predators that are large enough to kill deer, and we don't like them living in the suburbs (which is where we are having more and more deer problems).

Of course there is an inbred desire for blood in humanity. It's part of our nature. I presume by your posting that you are vegan and use no animal products at all, otherwise you are an incredible hypocrite. If you like beef hamburgers, you have the same hunger for flesh that hunters have. And you don't stop yourself.

My guess is that you eat meat, but have never watched a video of how the meat packing plants kill the meat, and you've never killed and eaten what you killed.

And, no, I have no desire to kill and eat a human. It's unnatural to kill and eat your own kind. Very few predators eat their own kind (and they also rarely kill their own kind).

Also, I have two cats. I feed them well. They do not need to kill lizards or birds or rabbits or frogs or rats or mice. They do it anyway. Why? They are predators. Predators like to hunt and kill. I worry about people who don't like to hunt. I feel you are repressing your nature, and you are more likely to snap and commit a mass shooting. I've never heard of a hunter doing so.

Well said. I agree. Currently, I don't hunt with a rifle, I hunt with a camera, but I don't delude myself that it's any different, other than the kill. As I said to my brother-in-law who introduced me to bird-watching--this is almost as good as hunting (and you can do it all year), however, the operative word is "almost." It's still not quite the same. The kill isn't fun, but its almost necessary.

It makes one more in touch with your humanity and with the natural world. When you are hunting, your senses come alive. You become part of nature.

Related to this, Balto, when was the last time you took a walk that didn't involved pavement or a sidewalk? What kind of animals did you see? What kind of plants?

I find steak disgusting, I find beef disgusting, the only meat if it can be classified as meat I eat is fish. In a sense, the deer overpopulation is the fault of the hunters for killing off the larger predators. The destruction of crops is a result. As a first world society, we should be abhorring hunting. The only real reason to hunt is if you are part of the tribes in the Amazon rain forest or one of the third world countries in Africa. Again, we are the only species that hunts out of pleasure. Your friend is an example of this. He finds wild meat more satisfying (pleasure), so he hunts for wild meat. He doesn't do it out of necessity, unlike other animals in the animal kingdom.

I couldn't tell you the type of plants, but I've seen many different types as well as trees. I don't live in a forest-like area, so when I've taken hikes, I haven't seen any animals.

The larger predators were killed out 100 years ago, and they aren't coming back. they weren't killed by hunters, they were killed by farmers, homeowners and governments. They are not coming back.

So you really didn't want to know why people hunt? You just wanted to tell us we are wrong....

We are not the only animals that hunt and kill for fun. Heck, dolphins do it in the wild. My house cats are fat, and always have food in their bowls, yet they hunt. Are they human?

Have you ever hunted? Why not? Do you have any idea how it feels? If not, then how can you say we should be abhorring hunting? You haven't done it.

Oh, for animals who hunt and kill for fun:

No, he doesn't care where the wild meat comes from. He eats wild-caught fish (caught by others), he will eat deer (killed by others). He doesn't hunt all of his own meat or catch all of his own fish. His point is that eating farmed raised meat is what is bad. He's against enslaving animals to eat them (or get their milk or their eggs). He doesn't mind hiring other people to kill animals for him. (I don't either).

I would never participate in a activity that is so morally bankrupt. Even Disney teaches us hunting is bad. We don't hunt to survive, so survival is out of the question. We and the dolphins hunt for fun, that leaves over half of the animal kingdom that hunts to survive, and doesn't hunt out of recreation. Your first sentence puts the fault on the hunter for why the animals don't exist. They were killed by "farmers, homeowners and governments" so effectively hunters. If a grizzly charges at you, and you shoot it, that is different than if you decide to go looking for grizzlies to shoot.. Fish repopulate at such a fast rate I don't consider them victims of being hunted.

Even Disney? It's movie studios and Amusement parks. Why would you take your moral guidance from a movie studio?

I told you some people do still feed their families this way out of economic need.

You do realize that at the core, your objection to hunting comes back to your own fear of death, right? There are more than enough deer and hunters are often needed to keep the populations under control. If not controlled you end up with large populations of deer starving to death

There can be no life without death. Another hog gave its life for me this morning, and another cow died for me last evening.

That's how it always has been and always will be.

A person can either hunt or indirectly pay a trained assassin at the slaughterhouse -- and pay a profit margin to the meat packing company for the privilege of paying the assassin.

Even before the eastern philosophers taught me of the joy of fishes I noticed that fishes bleed and die also.

If you think hunting is 'morally improper' go spend some time at a slaughter house.

But they don't have a highly developed brains.

You can't make friends with a fish.

A buddy of mine grew up on a small farm. They raised their own beef and ate it. His father always said he never let the kids give the animals names. Once they get a name, you can't eat it, :D

My dad worked at a slaughter house for a summer while in his late teens. He couldn't eat hamburger for years.

For the named one that gets the reprieve another unnamed one must die in its place.

There can be no life without death.

Man is the greatest predator on the face of the earth, the greatest life-taker.

Specialization of labor gives many the illusion that they are not predators.

    Ah, a VEGAN!

Strict Buddhists in India found themselves in a pickle when fire ants took over their monastery. What, or what were they to do?

There are no "predators" in nature to control wild hog, boa constrictors, deer or pythons. Your claim of that is just nonsense. Don't control/limit pests and we would not have enough food. A large herd of deer can strip a corn field in a night and out of control rabbits can take out any vegetable garden in a night.

Cats will kill virtually anything that moves "for sport." So will wild dogs and most other predators, but particularly cats. Even animals that don't eat meat will kill rivals from the upper mammals down to insects and micro organisms.

In short, every truism you assert is 100% exactly opposite from the truth.

Yeah, but hiking does the same thing. So does camping. Or growing your own vegetables.

Killing the nature you've just gotten in touch with, seems a trifle ... off?

No, almost all lower life forms are vastly greater killers. Top to bottom, humans are NOT the greatest killers. How many plankton do you think a blue whale murders each day?
