Alex, I would agree with you in that I would have handled it differently. However, it may not have been an illegal action depending upon what state you live in. Michigan is on the far end of the scale. In my state, it's very different. You can defend yourself as well as your property if the perp is still on it.
Here's the other issue. Knock and rob is SOP for home invasion. It's not like the UPS truck is outside with a brown truck.

 

But it seems obvious the kid was not a home invader. If it was thought that he was a home invader it would have been stupid to leave the cover of your home and go out into the open where you become an easier target for the rest of the crew ready to pounce on you and yours.

This will be an interesting story as it unfolds.

 

You never really know. A lot of home invaders use women to gain entry. Plus this guy was a retired fireman whose wife was the first to encounter him and stated that he WAS a home invader. He might have just saw red and did something stupid.

 

I may be wrong in this but I think you have to do SOME sort of overt act before people can just blaze away. This seems particularly the case here where it seems there was one of these electronic doorbells that enables you to see and talk to the person before you open the door.

OTOH maybe the woman saw the guy, told him to leave and he didn't, that could be seen as scary to nervous people.

If you think that "the left" is orchestrating a conspiracy promoting hatred against white people, no wonder you are having a bizarre, visceral reaction. We can have conversations exploring the fairness of affirmative action and the existence of white privilege without hating people.

 

Depends upon the state. It's always good to be in fear of your life before using deadly force. In my state you can use deadly force for the defense of property and for trespassing, though in the latter those lines are somewhat blurred. It's probably not a very common even if it occurs at all. What hasn't been established was a shot fired in the first place ( probably ) and was it aimed at the kid or a warning shot.
A number of years ago I remember a perp was killed by shotgun by a neighbor who witnessed an ongoing burglary. I believe it was referred to the grand jury without charges because the guy followed state law.

I heard of something like that going on in Texas. What I can't understand is what prevented this guy from killing some guy who has just locked his keys inside.

He witnessed and saw the break in and knew his next door neighbor. There was also the case of a drunken Brit tourist who had way too many at a strip joint in Houston. I don't remember the specifics but the guy went wandering the neighborhood beating on doors to the point of breaking them down. He went to the back yard when he was shot through the door and killed. Once again referral without charges.

You have to look at in terms of context Alex. YBM's have a reputation for doing incredibly stupid things like Polar Bear Hunting. ANYBODY coming to my door is a reason for caution. If there is brown truck outside and the guy has a brown uniform on, I'm less inclined to be suspicious. Anyone else, then yes. When you consider that many if not the majority of home invasions are done by YBM's then yeah they rate high on a danger scale.
Case in point. In the Houston Meyerland area there was a home invasion gang that was eventually caught. The reason they choose Meyerland was because A) It was a predominately Jewish neighborhood whose residents would not look upon them with as much suspicion and B) It was a Jewish neighborhood whose residents were unlikely to be armed.

I won't open the door to just about any unknown person who isn't a cop. (I have a video doorbell and had a through the door viewer) but I won't shoot through the door either. (Bortan is quite vocal so most people won't knock hard anyway) The point is my cautions are all automatic and color-blind. You and most rightists seem to be promoting the idea that whites are in such danger from blacks that they should be able to gun them down on the sidewalks adjoining, so overwhelmingly dangerous are they.

That's not an absolute. Shooting a fleeing felon who you've just watched kill someone can be appropriate. Depending on the item stolen shooting a fleeing felon can be demanded.
