Homemade fully-automatic weapons are showing up on Perth, Australia streets.

Not semi-automatic. Not bolt-action. Not revolvers.

    FULLY-AUTOMATIC WEAPONS!

More proof that gun control does not work.

Just because a law isn't 100% effective doesn't mean it doesn't work at all. There are good arguments against gun control but they aren't found in your OP.

Nanny wants to outlaw "ghost guns." Ghost gun is the new often scare quoted term to describe home made and unserialized firearms.

Might as well outlaw thinking about guns while you're at it.

Because the more you attempt to control anything that man can make, not just guns, the more man will think of ways to circumvent your controls.

Gun control does not work just like prohibition didn't work and the drug war isn't working.

But gun laws in Europe and East Asia has worked. You have no evidence gun laws haven't worked.

I live in this city. It is relatively safe, except in rape statistics. Gun crime is there, like any city, but it's not frequent. Nobody I know has heard gunshots on the street.

I strongly support a middle ground between our gun laws and those of the US. I feel that mace and tazers should be legal for licensed, trained citizens to carry, and their use amongst women should be encouraged as a means to drop our rape rate.

I personally support concealed carry of handguns like the Czechs, but there is no conceivable chance of that happening in my lifetime.

I encourage you to come to our beautiful city for a shoot sometime, and there are plenty of awe inspiring 4 wheel driving locations within a few hours drive.

    No hunting though :(

States with existing high homicide rates may be more likely to enact tough gun control. We have seen many examples of gun control as being enacted as a reaction to violence. So it is no surprise that there is a lack of or even a negative correlation.

It's funny how easily you can muddy the water by giving numbers a name and calling them a statistic.

Homicide statistics, for example, can include murder, defensive homicide, negligent or accidental homicide, even suicide. Making a change to gun laws can not have a directly correlated effect on all of these types of homicide.

For every action there is an reaction. The entire system is never a simple as those who claim to be in control of things make it out to be. Gun control laws have consequences, some are inherently unintended and therefore difficult to directly observe and impossible to directly correlate.

Uh huh. John Lott, a leading researcher in the field of Gun violence statistics, whether you agree with him or not, is not utterly ignorant of a field of study. That’s who wrote the article you called fake news. Now to your question.

This is exactly what I’m talking about. What’s important? Is it the RATE at which shootings occur? Is it the rate at which gun related murder occurs? Is it the rate at which murder in general occurs?

Can you compare a country with a lower murder rate? What happens when you compare a country with a lower murder rate that saw an increase in murder after regulations were put in place, but still has a rate that’s lower than the U.S.? Would that make sense? Would you rather have 3 attacks like Anders Brevik, Nice, and the ‘15 Paris nightclub attack, only two checks in the gun violence column but 300 people dead and 1190 people injured? You can add up Parkland, Vegas, Orlando Night club, San Bernardino, Sandy Hook and get 5 in the gun violence column, but only get 166 deaths and 950 injured. That’s twice the rate of gun violence for half the consequences.

You can’t just push numbers together from difference sources and different conditions and conclude that you’ve isolated out all those differences by given them a new name.

The crackpot notion that society should not have the right to protect itself against crime via criminal laws because criminals are likely to violate them is a validation of the consensus that some folks should not be trusted with guns.

And in part, when they make the focus the gun instead of the criminal, they actually make matters worse. Criminals love it, and some of them look forward to the rules becoming so tight that a profitable black market in guns will emerge. Then of course, gun theft will become a priority target, and gun smuggling and unregistered manufacture will thrive- selling mostly to criminal customers. That's what happens when you can't see beyond your nose and make myopic decisions- things get worse for everyone except the crooks.

There is a man in Sweden that is always snapping his fingers, because as he explains, it keeps the elephants away. You have no evidence that doesn't work either.

My point is that the OP is claiming that gun laws haven't worked and I am saying there is no evidence of that and we have many examples of nations with gun laws with lower homicide rates.

Harvard is a pretty liberal institution and I am curious on the details of their study. When looking at homocide and murder, nationally and globally I don't see much of a correlation at all. Maybe in some places it does work because the people don't like guns but in the US 80% of gun deaths are gang-related and I have a hard time believing they are going to obey gun laws and drug laws have failed to keep drugs out of the US.

Yes, it is hard to find a correlation. If there any evidence they do or do not work? Is there anything that has a bigger impact on homicide than gun ownership rates that we should worry about more?

The thing that has the biggest correlation with homicide rate is your sex, then your age. We can’t outlaw that though. Crimes that are committed as a consequence of black market trading are high up there. The drug war being a key culprit. Domestic violence rates, suicide rates, single parent rates all correlate quite positively.

The gun is just an easy thing to target, it’s not the thing that has the biggest impact.
