Some members feel that immigrants should always speak English.

And if they dont speak English, they should be penalized and maybe even deported.

What say you? Should it be illegal for American citizens and Permanent Residents to speak a language other than English when in public?

    Should multiple infractions bring deportation?

My position is neither of four : immigrants should be able to speak english, I don't think it should be illegal to speak something else than english in public, but it's rude. It's just a matter of politeness, unfortunately, no law can force people to be polite.

It's not a matter of right, it's a matter of politeness, but I don't think you can understand. Unfortunately, some people use their native language to ill speak of people around them, so yes, it is rude to use a foreign language in public, because people around you don't know if you're insulting them ore not.

no, I cannot fathom why anyone would consider it to be "rude" to speak Russian, or Spanish, or Chinese, or Polish in public.

I guess I just mind my own business.

Like I said, some people use their own language to insult people who don't speak their language just right in front of them. When someone speak their language and they didn't excepted that, those kind of people are often extremly confused because they can't assume their treacherousness.

The exclamation points in the poll options that you most disagree with are highly persuasive.

It is an odd poll in that what is normally debated is should immigrants have to know or learn rudimentary language, not whether it should be illegal to speak in any language but English in general. As such, it is a worthless poll in my opinion and accordingly I did not vote.

its a little paranoid to assume everyone speaking a language other than English is talking about your mamma.

I'm not even assuming that. I'm just saying that if I would be in a foreign country, and I could speak the local language, I would. When I'm on websites where everybody speak english, even when someone try to speak to me in french, I don't. Because I don't like to exclude people from conversations.

By the way, I'm not speaking of tourists who don't speak your language because they can't, I'm speaking of people who settle in, can speak english, and don't, just to not be understood. I can understand however that people want to speak in their native language sometimes to remember their fatherland/motherland. When you're in a foreign country, it's sometimes pleasant to speak your mothertongue.

But I think that when you're with people who don't speak your language, and you speak their language which is the local language, it's just simple politeness to speak in their language.

I live in NYC and always come across folks speaking other languages.

I NEVER assume they are talking about me.

    why would I?

My wife is a Nurse and one of her biggest problems (other than guys hitting on her) is the need to call up interpreters in order to treat patients. There have been times where an individual almost died due to the wait for language assistance or not understanding her orders of care. I feel this should be part of immigration reform and tested before citizenship is granted. Perhaps a five year period to learn the language or deportation would be effective.

this thread isn't about the ability to speak English, but the choice to speak another language outside of the home.

and until English is made the official language of this country, its bigotry to require folks learn English or get deported

It's not when you come across people, it's sometimes in stores or administration, when some people change their language instantly just to speak obviously of you, to insult you. It's not all people, it's some people who are rude, that use their language as a way to insult you in a public way. I never pretended it's everybody, it's some people.
Anyway, it's not a big concern.
I don't think it should be mandatory to speak english in public, I just consider it's more polite.

The English Test to Become a Naturalized U.S. Citizen
One of the most important requirements for becoming a U.S. citizen is that you are able to show U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) that you can read, speak, and write basic English. You'll do this during an in-person review of your application for naturalization, which usually takes place some months after you have submitted your Form N-400.

You will have to read one to three English sentences out loud to a USCIS examiner. You will also have to write down one to three English sentences after the USCIS officer reads them aloud to you. And, you will need to follow the examiner's instructions, and speak with him or her about the information you provided in your application for U.S. citizenship...
    https://www.lawyers.com/legal-info/...d-civics-requirements-for-naturalization.html

But on every election day in states like California there are hundreds of thousands of supposedly U.S. citizens showing up and the only English they know is "No **** engles...votación Español, gracias."

What the **** is going on ???

It's not a real problem, it's annoying, it's just funny when you're speaking their language and can confront them.

It's not hearing people in another language who is annoying, otherwise I wouldn't visit other countries or listening stuff in english, and considering my family, I would be in a very poor situation.
I just consider that you're with someone who don't speak your language, it is more polite to speak a language he can understand. It's simple as that.
Even in France, if I'm with only one person in a group who don't speak french and speak english, I prefer to speak in english, it's about staying understandable by everyone and not speaking in the back of people.

I think they should be able to speak english but not required to at all times... to be honest that last part is absurd, besides I like the sound of other languages on the ear

How about a choice stating, by what right. There are many members with English as their native language that should learn the language.

Even though English is the language of the land and it would behoove an immigrant to learn the language for better communication, by what right does one tell another what language they will speak in public or in private.

America is one of the most backward countries in the world. Most here can barely speak one language while many places in the world, the majority of the populace speak multiple languages.

It shouldn't be against the law to speak a foreign language in public.

Since English is the language spoken in the US, government business should only be in English.

Name a country that doesn't require it's immigrants to learn the official language.

A country you'd want to immigrate to, anyway.

when I am hanging out with a group of people, its rude for them to speak another language around me.

when I am at work and I am engaging in official business, I demand folks speak English around me. Specifically so that they cannot hide relevent information from my inspections.

but everyone else has every damn right to speak Martian if they like.

its none of my damn business if folks on the street speak Spanish, Chinese or Klingon
