I was discussing mobile phone data usage whilst not connected to WiFi at home with my 17 yr old kid.

I've used 0.1gb in the last 20 days, so not much by the end of the month. My lad has used 90gb!!!

I asked him what on earth he's doing. He showed me his phone, nearly every conceivable social media app running with masses of useless nonsense from his friends flying about.

Utterly gobsmacked at how much time kids waste of their lives. Are your kids the same?

Even if he ran every social app in existence it still wouldn’t come out to 90gb a month.

    He’s streaming videos. Probably porn.

I agree with the video streaming. I can't stream video because I have metered internet. I can access web sites until I'm blue in the face. Maintaining my own web site on a daily basis with a backup takes about 6gb per month. If I streamed video, I would use my monthly allowance in a couple of days.

The only thing that would take up 90GB of data in a month is if he's streaming a lot of video.

Voice over IP (Internet phone) takes roughly 0.75 mB per minute. An hour on the phone would be 45 mB. At 1000 MBs per Gig, if it was just half phone usage, he must be on the phone for about 1000 hours per month which is 33 hours per day. Unless it's video phone he's using to talk to his girlfriend, he's gotta be streaming a lot of video.

I've noticed the immatures bleating on about porn. His phone provider is O2 and inappropriate websites are blocked. As he's not 18, he can't have a contract in his name so it's in my name. For porn sites etc.. to work, I would have to get in touch with O2 to unblock that content.

So he's basically stuck with social media and YouTube, 90gb per month worth.

Just that I explained how content is blocked on O2, yet it went through your ear and out the other, that's why I asked. That's normally the behaviour of a Democrat/Socialist so I just wondered.

Yeah I said that because any 17yr old male can easily bypass blocked content on a cell phone or PC. Theres only about half a zillion ways it can be done. But did you find out what all the downloads were?

That can do it. Streaming video uses a lot of GB.

O2 is a British company, they have different controls at the ASP level.

Regardless of the subject matter, the problem of high data usage is video streaming. Doesn't matter if it's porn or rainbows/unicorn videos or netflix.

Do you stream video at millenial level?

Normal resolution netflix streams at about a GB per hour. Not hard to imagine 90 hours of netflix being streamed by a bored teen. That's 3 hours per day for a month.

Well, I know more and more people that are ditching internet, outside of their phone plan. I have contemplated it myself.

I hear bragging about what a simple hack it is to unblock those porn controls.
Many also upload homemade porn and use much bandwidth doing so.

It’s not bragging friend, it’s just a reality. The only parental control devised that hasn’t been cracked is not giving your child a phone at all.

Not to be rude but if you honestly believe that your 17 year old son can't figure out how to watch porn on his phone with your "inappropriate websites blocked" thing then I believe you severely underestimate how much better at technology kids are than well..."you".

I mean from you as a parents sake I hope not but I was a 17 year old boy around the time when the internet became more widespread for public use and my parents thought they could put porn blockers on our home computer too lol....
