State Sen. Troy Balderson (R) is leading Franklin County Recorder Danny O'Connor (D) by just under 2,000 votes with 100% of precincts reporting in the special election in Ohio's 12th District, and it appears that Balderson has won.

But there is an asterisk to this Republican victory. Republican dominance in this district should have meant a no contest victory for the GOP.

The 12th district is not, by any traditional measure, a toss-up district. It has been held by a Republican member of Congress continuously for the past three decades. In 2012, even while losing the state to Barack Obama, Mitt Romney won the 12th by 10 points. Four years later, Trump carried it by 11 points. With twice as many registered Republicans as Democrats, this district should have been a slam dunk for the GOP, and the fact that they are still counting ballots is an ominous sign for GOP's prospects in November.

Former Rep. Pat Tiberi, R-Ohio, is one the 44 House Republicans who have quit -- including Speaker Paul Ryan --and he had long held the district. Prior to that, Ohio Gov. John Kasich represented the district in Washington.

Although O'Conner rarely, if ever, mentioned Trump, the Democrats tried to make this election a referendum on Trump. That nearly worked.

The problem for the Democrats was that the Republican voter saw this election for what it was, not for what it was not. Yes, Trump is a jerk, an incompetent President, and a vindictive braggart who characterized Lebron James as a fool. But Trump was not on the ballot. Balderson was and at stake was the Republican majority in the House.

Trump, a former New York Democrat, did his best to win this election for the Democrats with his comments about James and his dysfunctional speech on Saturday during which he misrepresented nearly every issue mentioned. It was a speech meant solely for his gullible base, and the educated Republicans in the district rejected it.

In the end, the Republican voter outwitted Trump.

The bottom line is dems don't have that seat. Close only counts in hand grenades and horseshoes.

Get over it, and don't act like a child about it.

My granddaughter is working on Beto O'Rourke's campaign in Austin Texas in his bid to unseat Ted Cruz.

According to her, illicit contributions from overseas donors keep flooding in, and need to be returned in order to remain within the parameters of ethical campaign practices. Workers are suspecting that desperate Republican campaigners may be involved, as Cruz has been continuously critical of O'Rourke's overwhelming financial support and its sources. . . . Cruz has swallowed his pride and asked for Trump's assistance in his campaign, despite the uneasy rift between them.

With the ever widening divide created by extreme partisan politics and the extent of our diminishing expectations in political candidates, can we expect dirty politics to be the norm in upcoming elections???

What is even more interesting is the fact a couple of hundred thousand Republicans didn't bother to vote because the real election is in three months. That coupled with the number of voters (highly unlikely to vote republican) put something over 1000 votes into the green candidate box.
Relax there Sandy, the fun hasn't even started yet.
You like research, study the poor whites that came into Ohio over the hillbilly highway who always voted democrat until the last election when they switched to Trump because they saw they were being screwed over by the democrats.

Oh, I think so. We need only look at our President.

This is absolutely amazing. One of Trump's lawyers, Jay Sekulow, has a radio show.

    https://www.oneplace.com/ministries/jay-sekulow-live/

Another Trump lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, is negotiating with himself. He talks and talks while the prosecutor, Robert Mueller, remains totally silent. Mueller will decide on the steps taken by his investigation team. Giuliani is talking to Trump's gullible base knowing they will believe that he is actually accomplishing something. The rest of the country is laughing at the former New York mayor, and wondering whatever happened to America's mayor.

Federal prosecutors on Wednesday charged New York Republican Rep. Chris Collins, his son and another man with 13 counts of securities fraud, wire fraud and false statements. Collins, who was the first sitting member of Congress to endorse Donald Trump's presidential bid, surrendered Wednesday morning at his attorney's office in Manhattan, according to the FBI.

Paul Manafort, Trump's former campaign manager is on trial in Arlington, VA. Prosecutors allege that Manafort worked as unregistered agents of the government of Ukraine and the Party of Regions, a pro-Russian political party led by Victor Yanukovych. While serving as president of the former Soviet republic from 2010 to 2014, Yanukovych was closely aligned with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The star witness against Manafort is Trump's former deputy campaign manager, Rick Gates. Turns out, Gates is as much a crook as Manafort, the only difference being he made a deal with Mueller.

George Papadopoulos, former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser, pleaded guilty in October to making false statements to the FBI.

Michael Flynn, Trump’s former national security adviser, pleaded guilty in December to making false statements to the FBI.

Richard Pinedo: This California man pleaded guilty to an identity theft charge in connection with the Russian indictments, and has agreed to cooperate with Mueller.

Alex van der Zwaan: This London lawyer pleaded guilty to making false statements to the FBI about his contacts with Rick Gates and another unnamed person based in Ukraine.

The Trump administration is a joke. Trump is a joke. He has surrounded himself with crooks, bag men for the Russians, and shysters.

"Couple of hundred thousand" in 12th District? All Republicans? That's great news, but do you have any source or did that little tidbit come from your butt.

Balderson should have been beaten handily due to his "deplorable" type gaffe against 1/3 of his constituents.

"We don't want someone from Franklin County representing us." REALLY? and he still won?

That's one of the worst political gaffes I've ever heard.

BTW, OP you are terrible at concern trolling, give it up, no one's buying. "But...but... GUYS... I really am a Republican I PROMISE!"

Say whatever you want, but your words for months have been against republicans, conservatism, and President Trump. I've even pointed out your obvious brainwashing by the lying liberal media multiple times.

You will believe what you wish to believe, but reality will continue to bite you in the a$$.

The target to hit for the Republican is at least 7,600 of those 8,500 votes.(Or even as few as 7,200 would suffice.) Though 7,200 would be "too close to call"

It's just a dose of reality for you. Dems have been LOSING elections SINCE 2010, NET LOSSES, and I don't expect that to change since dems haven't changed. They think they and the lying liberal media can brainwash the people to vote dem again without changing, that is moving toward the center.

In reality, it's the sane center-left(whomever is left anyway) who has a chance of winning seats. These Trump resisters aren't going to do it. On the democratic side of the aisle, Tim Ryan is the democratic version of Jim Jordan. A Jordan-Ryan dominated House would actually get things done.

No, if they divided the remaining 8500 votes evenly, republicans win. 2001 MORE THAN HALF of those would have to be dem votes to win.

Either way, they have to go back and do it again in Nov.
Dems still have 1000+ seats to recover losses SINCE 2010.

I was of the impression that the Dem needs to win 1,501 more votes at least(IE: Overcome the 1,500 lead.)

I was going by the OP numbers, but he is quoting CNN, meaning it might just be BS anyway.

    But it's simple math. Dems need half of the remaining votes plus 2001 more, or whatever. 8500 - 2001 = 6499/2 = 3250 + 2001 = 5251 out of 8500. Doubtful.

But this is all distraction from the reality that dems haven't changed and lost elections since 2010. And therefore STILL have 1000+ seats to recover losses since 2010. That's NET LOSSES, and across the board at local, state, and federal levels of power.

That means the democrat party has serious problems with the American voters and haven't changed.

The Democratic Party has been declaring they win by losing for some years now. The more seats and offices they lose, the more they claim they are winning.
