Of course, I expected that answer.

If you must know: Deficits are never good, but they sometimes are an unfortunate necessity in times of economic recession, when government spending has to compensate for private sector spending, to prevent the economy from going into a depression.

On the other hand, government deficits in times when the economy is already in high gear only throw fuel on the raging fire, making it burn out more quickly. When the next recession comes, and it will, government has lost its ammunition to fight it, because the money was squandered in good times. This makes large deficits caused by tax cuts during good economic times the pinnacle of irresponsibility.

What's so hard to understand about it?

Stop accusing me (and others) of freeloading. I have never taken a single dime of assistance from the government. In contrast, when I came to the US as a legal immigrant, I paid payroll taxes from the beginning, while not being eligible for benefits for the first 10 years. If I had left again before the 10 years were over, I would have subsidized your system, as other legal immigrants do.

I'm hearing a possible growth rate of 5%. If these tax cuts stimulate the economy then higher tax receipts could allow the cuts to pay for themselves.

I'll tell you what will happen. This is a short-time economic boom caused by consumers and government going into debt. Once the debt overhang becomes too large, the next deep recession will follow, at which point government revenue will fall through the floor and deficits will explode. Of course, when that happens, your side will blame it on someone else, just like in 2008.

Yet, Reagan tripled the public debt.

 

But was that because spending increased so much and not so much related to tax cuts?

 

Then, why didn't he cut spending first, and then cut taxes? Actually, why didn't GWB and Trump do that either?
