300,000 Troops and 900 Tanks: Russia’s Biggest Military Drills Since Cold War

Russia is mobilizing for its biggest military exercise since the height of the Cold War, the Kremlin says, citing a tense international climate that is “frequently aggressive and unfriendly toward us.”

The exercises, which are set to involve nearly 300,000 Russian troops, 1,000 aircraft and 900 tanks, will also include units from China for the first time. They will start on Sept. 11.

In a separate display of military power, Russia was reported on Tuesday to have assembled a large flotilla of warships off the coast of Syria. Russian news media outlets, citing unnamed defense ministry officials, described it is as Russia’s largest naval deployment in the area since Moscow first intervened in Syria’s civil war in September 2015.

The move follows a flurry of claims by Russia, unsupported by evidence, that the West is preparing to stage a fake chemical weapons attack inside Syria as a pretext for an assault on the forces of the Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad.

Let's just look at the facts:

"Vostok 2018" takes place in the middle of Siberia between the Urals and the Pacific coast ... so far away from Europe and also Syria.
Of course, and rightly so, Russia is upset about the West due for these stupid statements and allegations and policies towards Russia, and the above-cited NYT article is a good example. There is an admittedly big maneuver at the butt of the world in Russia and already indirect and direct links and connections with Syria are made.

Surely our governmental jitters in the US and Europe in the whole see again a threat to Europe somehow and will express concern about the allegedly evil Russian aggressiveness.
That NATO in the Baltic States and in Poland ... so on the doorstep of Russia ... about two months ago made a major maneuver with about 20,000 soldiers and such maneuvers take place in this scale many times a year, we are more silent and concentrate rather, what the evil Russian Bear does!

No, I defend neither Russia nor Putin and certainly not I am "I hate the West Troll" ... but I see things more objectively from both angles with neutral eye!

I wonder why Russian terror troops need exercise. Isn't killing of Syrian people not exercise enough?

Now, if I were such a "I hate the US Troll," I could answer you with the counter question why the US military must do exercises when they have been doing enough practical exercise in many countries for 17 years, such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya ...?

So it would look like the other side of you ... and may be that you do not care, the way it does not matter what you think, but it's the way to make pointless and idiotic conflicts about absolute bullshit!

American and NATO armies are the good guys. They make the world a safer place by fighting rogue states and Terrorists like Putin.

I'm sure that you're an anti-US troll. Who else would open a thread about Russian gangsters?

I can only guess two reasons:

    1. They don't want to get rusty.

    2. They need to show other countries that they can have faith in them if they do business with them (BRICS?). They want to project that they have a force that can stand up to any type of aggression be it military, economic, or otherwise.

But they're economically weak as always. Although they have many resources.

I think the term is "saber rattling." It is akin to advertising but more expensive.

Except a strategic warm water port which is why they have no choice but to support Assad so Russia can use Syria's port.

Do good guys overthrow legitimate governments? Do good guys execute innocents by drone? Do good guys take their country to war based upon lies and deception?

Good guys can do 2 of the three and still be called good. Executing innocents though......that one is all bad and a terrible mark on our country.

The funny thing is that Germany does correctly not see any problem with this exercise which is thousands of miles away from Europe and accepts that every nation has the right to do siuch things on their own territory in any extend they want to do.

But really funny is ... if I take your hint on Northstream ... that Germany is smart enough not to rely on the treacherous and fraudulent US under Trump, where the extortion on the part of Washington to turn off the oil tap if Germany is not the idiotic will and demands of Trump prevents ... a danger that is many times higher than that of Russia to be treated this way!

Hard to argue with that. Trump absolutely loves trying to use leverage over other countries in his childish attempts at "negotiation."

China is kicking his butt for it. Kim Jong Un is laughing heartily at his "friend" from New York.

It may have been a good 20 years with me ... but if I remember back then, the US vehicles and tanks had collapsed the most during maneuvers in Germany.
Funny was back then ... and there I was personally there ... when the former large Air Base in Bitburg was closed and all the stuff had to be brought by truck to Bremerhaven. Two-thirds of the US trucks had not been able to drive. Already "great" when 500lbs bombs are to be transported on a truck with only one-sided functioning brakes ...

What I mean by that is simply that you should not put idiot chattering on here, which Russian military device automatically calls scrap and inferior just because it's Russian, etc.

Do you think the Russians have fought more for freedom and democracy throughout the world more than the Americans?

Now the Russians laughingly claim that others are “frequently aggressive and unfriendly toward us.” When was Russia ever friendly with anyone?

Perhaps but, as you say, 'every nation has the right to do such things on their own territory in any extend they want to do'.

How is Kim kicking anyone's butt? Are you cheering for the NoKo dictator?

China is having its own problems, with many claiming it's in decline, while the American economy is the strongest it's been in decades.

Where do you get your information?

I did not say that or claim ...

But let me think about when the US last fought for democracy, human rights and freedom of others .... mmmh ... somehow I can not think of anything. Can you think of an example?

    That's a wrong question ...
When was Russia the last time since the Cold War to act unfounded aggressively and hostile?
You will certainly come with Ukraine, Georgia and the Baltics, but if you exceptionally put off the "Russia is automatically evil because Russia" glasses and look at things objectively, then it is something different as far as the truth is concerned!

And so there is nothing to complain about doing the maneuver or making crazy speculations out of it, correct?
