But when have tariffs ever improved the global economy (that thing that US is a large “shareholder” of)
Not an answer to my question, and I don't think anyone has argued that tariffs improve the global economy.
Perhaps when a sanity left the White House? Trade has always been geared in favour of the 'rich North'. If anything should be moaning about free trade, its sub-Saharan Africa. The only subtantive evidence of the domestic populations being made worse off.
I’m just saying. The Republican Party i used to know was loyal to the principal of tree trade, yet those representing the party have bent over backwards for the most anti-free trade president in over a century. I’ve left the party entirely because there’s too much love for the color red than the principals that used to define republicanism
There's always been sneaky protectionism (e.g. EU with Airbus and US with Boeing, often throwing in underhand military subsidisation). But you're right. The Party has allowed a petulant child to dictate too much. Giving up basic principles should be a no-no.
Circumstances have changed. The "American Century" is over. Now you are on the "Chinese Century". Since you are no longer the foremost industrial power in the world, free trade is no longer to your predominant advantage. It is to theirs. Free trade vs protectionism is a fluid decision and it depends on circumstance which is preferred at any time and with whom. Because for so long in America Free Trade has been the preference for the circumstance, people have become dogmatic about it. Forgotten about the circumstance in which it is not preferred. But those circumstances are back. Time to re-learn when to apply free trade and when not to.
Nonsense effort. That historical super powers supported free trade is arguably a reference to the infant industry hypothesis (with trade used to stabilise the world economy and reduce the need for direct military interventionism). The change from the right wing has naff all to do with that.
we have not turned our back on free trade. Capitalism is free trade between individuals and countries. Trump is merely trying to help China see the logic of free trade. Do you understand?
Does this mean the USA should start growing its own bananas at $20/LBS rather than import them at $.05/LBS????
The parties and even the country those parties are in are constantly shifting as they compete each other. Would you support a Republican Congress that supports an American Benito Mussolini? Give me an example of where nationalist economics didn't delay and exacerbate trade disputes?
The infant industry hypothesis refers to dynamic comparative advantage. You're arguing with yourself again
you've missed the point. China opposes free trade. How would you encourage China to trade freely? Please don't dodge the question by rather learn from it.
Free trade is a good thing if it is fair trade. Neither China or Europe trades fairly with the U.S. Unbridled free trade results in closed factories and lower paying jobs. If other nations refuse to work with us to achieve balanced trade, then we have to take measures.
so you don't want unbridled free trade between NY and California because it will result in closed factories and low wages? Maybe instead of Americans buy the cheapest best quality in the world there be a law forcing them to buy highest price and lowest quality??
I would show them I’m not messing around. If the elites in China want to abuse the global community, that is not an excuse to stoop to their level. It means the elites in China need to be dealt with swiftly. Not make the poor suffer
We’ve tried these tactics before, and they’ve never end well. When a man with a gun holds people hostage for goods, you don’t bargain with him trying to get the best deal. You get rid of the supreme leader making a mockery of Chinese democracy
The average Chinese worker is like a slave that has no options but to be a good, happy worker, content with their lot in life. Racism in China is terrible. These aren’t the type of people we need to be negotiating with. This isn’t a time to appease world leaders and play economic games at the cost of the underclass around the world. This is a time for divisive action under consistent priciples
I’m sorry, but this just blew my mind. Tell me about this magic philosophy for free markets that involves interfering with international trade policy??? I guess it works if you only consider American citizens people and American businesses businesses
