http://earthsky.org/human-world/why...il&utm_term=0_c643945d79-10a630c190-395188697 In a strange turn of events, AURA has suddenly shut down its Sunspot Solar Observatory in New Mexico. The FBI is involved, and speculation is running wild. Mercury leak? Terrorism? Espionage? Aliens? Has any poster been to this site or known of this site?
Why in the hell would you need to shut down Observatory to catch one night janitor downloading CP!!!!!!!!!
Because it was a mahunt, and they caught him in the middle of doing it, in real time. Why it is closed now, I am not sure. I imagine they just found all sorts of nasty holes in their electronic security, and are patching them up.
Sorry it still made no sense to me to need to shut down such a facility to catch and made a case against a janitor over CP. An what holes in their security, as an employee or even a janitor who is a contractor using their internet connection seem hardly to be a hole in their security. There seems something very very strange about this story.
That makes sense to me...it was a manhunt, in real time... That kinda seems like a pretty huge hole, to me. Here, read the facts: http://earthsky.org/human-world/why-sunspot-solar-observatory-nm-closed-fbi Also, the observatory is back up and running.
Sorry you seize his computers and hard drives and take him to jail there is no need to have a manhunt an as having CP mean that he can be taken to jail at once how in the hell is he going to be threat to anyone?????? There something very very odd and missing about this story.
While he lobs death threats at the staff, and now the entire database and communications array has to be inspected.
All the more reason to just arrest him at once and take take him to jail without bond not to shut down the whole facility for a week or more. As I stated there is far more to this story then we are being told. Footnote this guy was hired as a janitor not an IT expert so where did he get the knowledge to do harm or hide harm to their data bases and so on and a sweep to look for bombs could be done within hours.
VP- The Solar Observatory in New Mexico has been taken offline in response to cyber infiltration which manipulated all solar disturbances to resemble Warner Bros. animation characters. After watching for eleven hours and seeing no indication of Marty Martian the forensics team issued by DHS recommended the system be debugged before return to service. OPC has begun fumigation but due to the size and shape of the Telescope dish must make a custom cover that may take months to produce. www.buIIshltnews/imjustf@ckingwithyou.com
Sunshine on the closing of the facility. https://www.cnn.com/2018/09/17/us/national-solar-observatory-reopens/index.html (CNN)The mystery behind the sudden closure of New Mexico's Sunspot Solar Observatory has been revealed -- sort of -- in a statement announcing that the facility will reopen soon. The September 6 evacuation of the solar research facility at Sacramento Peak had everyone talking, except authorities. Adding to the mystery was the additional evacuation of residents in the area without any explanation, CNN affiliate KOAT reported. Consequently, speculation mounted, including theories involving aliens and UFOs given the facility's location about 85 miles southwest of Roswell, where a mysterious object crashed in 1947. The brouhaha prompted the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA), which manages the observatory, to release a morsel of information: an unspecified "security issue" was to blame. Finally, on Monday, AURA elaborated on the security issue. AURA said it was cooperating with a law enforcement investigation of criminal activity that occurred at Sacramento Peak. "During this time, we became concerned that a suspect in the investigation potentially posed a threat to the safety of local staff and residents. For this reason, AURA temporarily vacated the facility and ceased science activities at this location," the statement said. Mysterious 'security issue' forces a solar observatory to be evacuated "The decision to vacate was based on the logistical challenges associated with protecting personnel at such a remote location, and the need for expeditious response to the potential threat. AURA determined that moving the small number of on-site staff and residents off the mountain was the most prudent and effective action to ensure their safety." Recent developments in the investigation have led to the determination that the threat is no more, and the facility is transitioning back to regular operations starting Monday, the statement said. "Given the significant amount of publicity the temporary closure has generated, and the consequent expectation of an unusual number of visitors to the site, we are temporarily engaging a security service while the facility returns to a normal working environment," AURA said. "We recognize that the lack of communications while the facility was vacated was concerning and frustrating for some. However, our desire to provide additional information had to be balanced against the risk that, if spread at the time, the news would alert the suspect and impede the law enforcement investigation. That was a risk we could not take." CNN's Andrea Diaz contributed to this report.
That doesn't make sense...that is not a reason not to inspect the communications and database, which certainly is a reason to close the facility ..
Yes indeed a week to check a janitor possible hacking and do it mostly in secret. Hell the very fact that he did not have his laptop or his home computers encrypted with CP on them that can send him to prison for decades tell you he is not some strange janitor super hacker. Once more there is something very strange about this story of a night janitor collecting CP that needed the week long shutting down of the whole facility
A poor assumption by you, if you are implying that they were working around the clock. Most of it, if it had to do with ensuring the integrity of data and communications, was just waiting. Furthermore, the science continued to work off site, but clearly there was some sort of threat to safety of which we are not yet fully aware . Of course, to some, this is an invitation to wedge into this gap in our understainding whatever nonsense they fancy...
