Does this mean tariffs are having no affect on Chinese imports?

It would indicate they definitely are not having the desired effect.

Yeah. They are also curtailing the sales of US autos made in China for sale in the US.
FORD has announced it will not try to bring the Focus crossover into the US due to tariffs. They also announce layoffs of about 24,000 mostly white collar workers due, they say, to the steel and aluminum tariffs. In the midst of all this their bonds that they need to restructure have been downgraded even as the rates rise. They may be lucky to survive.

So basically what the Chinese trade surplus does is subsidize cheap goods for the average American by raising the national debt.

How does the trade surplus raise the national debt? You mean the Chinese national debt? Nothing about our trade deficit increases our national debt, but China may be fueling their trade surplus by subsidizing their goods and incurring a debt.

Not really. Government spending and lack of revenue raise the deficit, The money from trade comes back to us in investments or loans to finance that debt.

Money from trade goes to the bottom line of the companies that participate in the trading!

If you think the trade deficit is a monetary deficit, I don't think you should be criticizing anyone else on their economic learnings. Trade creates wealth. Econ 101.

Yep. Unlike trade deficits, tariffs are an actual net monetary cost. Trump needs to learn that, as do his supporters.

Like I said: trade creates wealth. Tariffs discourage that wealth creation, resulting in what economists call dead weight loss.

Ford is saying the import tariff on aluminum and steel cost them $1 Billion from their bottom line.

What it means is that Dirty Donalds punitive actions against the Chinese are not having the desired effect thus far.

Are you guys some kind of free traders are just anti-trump. YOu understand that this is a left response and the same that bernie Sanders proposed. Also, as far as the uptick in imports is to get the product on this shore before teh tariffs kick in. I started my career for 12 years or about I was a Union laborer, I never in a million years would I have thought that the left would abandon the working man and support trade with countries that don't allow us free acces to their markets as they have to ours.

It is the abandonment of the lower rung of workers that caused Trump to become President. Oh and by the way lets let 10 mill of illegal aliens come into our country to further depress wages of the lower rung of our workers.

Everyone knows there is a cost to the trade war, that is why Obama did not want to fight it. But China is not going to give us access to their markets by saying pretty please as has been the case since 2000, they are resisting and fighting back as they should to maintain their advantage.
