More important for the media is that he was a reporter. They wouldn't have given this the time of the day otherwise.

 

The fact that he was a reporter and thus had the opportunity for his criticism of the crown prince to be heard around the world was why he was assassinated in the first place. To suggest reporters only care because he was "one of them" is ridiculous.

It is my understanding that he was not a resident of the US because he wanted to become a citizen. He chose the US as a place where he could be safe from the Saudis. It was not as if he had some loyalty to the US. It was just a matter of convenience and safety. He was a Saudi who happened to live in the US.
