Judges do this just to spite people, when they don't like what they did for political or social reasons.

Anyone else who assaulted someone during a protest would have been granted bail.

 

Anyway, I strongly suspect the assault was not unprovoked. Almost always in these fights the other side got physical first.

Maybe that doesn't make it all okay, but getting into a fight after someone comes up and attacks you is very different than coming up to someone else and assaulting before they even did anything physical to you.

I know this is a lot of presumptions here, but if that was the case, that would make the denial of bail all the more outrageous.

Not surprised the judge here is in California.

It's kind of a minor point, but I also see Constitutional issues. Shouldn't this be in the jurisdiction of state courts?
