"four uncommanded movements over the last three years.." - it is strong.

American sailors I can only advise to monitor the rats - the rats, sensing the threat, will leave before the first fall of the ammunition.

But in general, this aircraft carrier is an excellent illustration of how to plunder the military budget. At the expense of taxpayers of course.
Know-how from the Pentagon - the unfinished ship is taken into operation, which is supposedly combat-ready, and then not operated for several years due to deficiencies.. And on the modifications and finishing the amount is still doubled or tripled.
Approximately the same thing happens with the F-35 and with other military developments.

What do you think about it?

This is what happens when you allow accountants and non technical folks to write requirements demanding delivery of stuff that hasn't been tested or developed fully. Or worse, when accountants and non technical folks spend years rewriting requirements or adding additional functionality to existing SOWs and contracts.

Why mag/lev elevators? Because someone thought they were "cool" or "Star Trek" or some other ridiculously superficial reason. Or, more probably, they're connected financially to the startup trying to productize their little dreams... Happens way too often these days...

Steam catapults have worked reliably on bird farms for about 7 decades. We can only hope that the USS Ford was designed to be easily retrofitted with steam catapults -- just in case the new technology proves out to be unreliable at sea.

If a mag/lev elevator goes bad on a skyscraper a few people might be killed in a crazy scenario where all goes bad in the system at once. On a bird farm the damage might be almost unlimited.

Oh, how I love wire rope and large diameter sheaves.

Keeping in mind that man has never made the first thing without risk in it.

While I'm all for new technology I'm only for it if it's an improvement over old technology. Far too often we go with the new simply because it's new not because it's better

To late now, the low information voters went with Obama back in 2008 and Donald Trump wasn't running for POTUS unfortunately

Fine Huntington-Ingalls for every cent that it requires to fix these massive deficiencies. Let them make no profit off the construction of this ship. If this causes them to go bankrupt, nationalize them.

Do the same thing to Lockheed-Martin regarding the F-22 and F-35. Send the message to military contractors that they won’t be allowed to double dip by massively overcharging the government for lemons that don’t live up to their claims and then also massively oversharging to fix their broken products’ faults.

Thankfully our coast guard could beat Russia in a war so we don't have much to worry about

Nationalizing would exacerbate the problem. It's government bureaucrats that decided to require this unproven technology

And it’s corporate greed tha said “Yes we can deliver that. No problem.” while lying through their teeth and telling their shareholders how rich this will make them.

Question should be were the elevators ever in the plans and detailed drawings that the carrier was designed and built from??

The military provides a basic scope of work and specifications on every project. If it were specified that a carrier had to be painted fire engine red that could be questioned, but if they insist, it is going to be red. The military approves the final design, signs off on major purchased components, signs off on the final drawings, and signs off on any revisions and engineering change notes to the drawings.

An example of near total waste would be the B-58 Hustler aircraft. It never had a firm mission and did only one thing: set speed records, which the brass wanted. If that's what they want that's what you make. The customer is always right. All of the B-58's except museum pieces were melted for scrap.

If you build hydraulics, gates, pintles, or anything for the Corp of Engineers they tell you exactly how to build it with specs and drawings. You can question the design but in the end you're going to do exactly what you are told to do by the COE. The product you ship must conform to the specs and drawings. The customer is always right.

You need: 1) a more up to date source; 2) to read the sources you post.

    From your link:
Turns out he was pretty much correct:

    https://www.f35.com/news/detail/388th-fw-419th-fw-fly-10000th-f-35a-sortie

So, plenty of workinig F-35s by now.

The US Coast Guard has two small-sized ice-class polar vessels. Striking contrast with Russia (41 icebreaker). The Coast Guard, as soon as it sees the Russians, will immediately raise a white flag.
And by the way, the US carrier fleet in reality is a naked king. On the one hand, the eleven the US carriers available in the Navy. But in fact, at every moment in time, only three of them are in the ranks.
Two more are in minor maintenance after hikes and, if necessary, can return to service within 3-4 months. The remaining six are undergoing medium and major repairs, including those involving the dismantling of decks and even elements of the hull's power set. The minimum period for their return to service starts from a year. Thus, there are eleven on paper, and in fact only three.

I suspect it goes even deeper than that.

It seems to me the whole strategy if flawed. This aircraft carrier that costs $13 billion (a cost that doesn't include the notoriously expensive and unreliable F-35 air-wing btw) can be taken out by a few missiles that cost less than a few million dollars each.

Most of us would logically conclude from this that madness reigns.

But in the last analysis we are smart enough to realise that it is greed that reigns.

"Corporate greed" is the words communist use and how the rest of us tell who is probably a communist at heart.

Real Communists have never sought wealth for themselves. Lenin, Stalin, Dzerzhinsky ... or any real communist sought to create a just society for all. They could easily have become the richest people in the world, but you read the inventory of the property that remained after their death. And you will never up writing that nonsense you wrote.
For example, during the war, Communist Pesochnikov Kuzma Yakovlevich, chairman of the Murmansk Cheka, working as chief of food warehouses and food supplies, died in 1942 from starvation. Because his beliefs did not allow him to have benefits in front of ordinary people. Read the book "How the steel was tempered," by Nikolai Ostrovsky. This is an autobiography described by a literary language. The book is very interesting, dynamic plot. And you will understand who the Communists really are. But I do not know if there is such a book in English.

“We can’t do it. That technology won’t work. Feel free to go to our competitors...oh, that’s right, we don’t have any because we are the only company in the world that builds supercarriers, so I guess you can’t have your fancy EM catapults.”

Golly....good thing it wasn't almost sunk by a crane in its drydock or needed to be towed when it was deployed....that would be embarrassing, I'm sure glad we have a few spares.
