What took the Democrats so long to make this change? And why did it take a new Muslim congresswoman to seek this change?

    https://edition.cnn.com/2018/11/19/...ear-minnesota-representative-trnd/index.html?

(CNN)Last week, Democrats announced a proposal to end a rule that bans headwear on the House floor. Rep.-elect Ilhan Omar, one of the first two Muslim congresswomen, vocally supported the move on social media this weekend.

"No one puts a scarf on my head but me. It's my choice -- one protected by the first amendment," the Minnesotan wrote on Twitter and Instagram.

Omar wears a religious headscarf, and under the current 181-year-old rule, a House member must be "uncovered" in order to address the floor, and cannot even enter the House "with his head covered."

If she gets to wear a hat, so does anyone else. If only she gets to wear a hat, that's 'respecting a religion'.

...and where do wigs fit in here? I know theres one or two women who aren't sporting their natural hair, prolly a few men too

Because she's a Muslim and not a Christian. I wonder if they'll allow yamulkes.

I assume she knew this policy when she ran for office.

No, and why would you want to wear a baseball cap in a government building? It is common practice that in courts, women can wear hats and men cannot.

Separation of Church and state only applies to Christians.

We're not talking about courts, but the US House, whose rules say no head coverings.

It is still a government building, here let me spell it out: G-O-V-E-R-N-M-E-N-T B-U-I-L-D-I-N-G. She is a woman, so that means that she can wear a hat or a head covering. This is also a religious a religious issue, and I can guarantee that she was a Hasidic Jew, there would be absolutely no rejection or opposition to her wearing head-covering. It is very telling, that the constitution of this nation protects religious freedom, but when it comes to we Muslim, all of the sudden there is a problem and disconnect with adhering to said constitution.

Right, a whole bunch of hypocritical BS. If this woman's beliefs include her wearing a head covering then that should not be a problem for us. This is the United States not some theocracy that punishes people for their nonviolent beliefs.

She should be allowed to based on freedom of religion. I'm a stickler on liberty (and a conservative Republican), and this is an example of freedom of religion. She should be allowed to observe her religion. I also support the FSM folks wearing their colanders in the House as well.

Probably because it's never been an issue before... I assume this will pass easily.

And for those trying to equate "ball caps" with a religious headscarf, well, I'd rethink my life thought processes just a smidge...

And no, to address your next thought, a MAGA hat will never qualify as religious headwear....

AMIN! It is telling that many of those who like to say how much more civilized that they are, display outright contempt and hypocrisy towards people who do not believe in their religious dogma.

I have a strong feeling that we have always allowed NUNS who wore the habit to sit in the congressional visitor observation seats to wear their nuns habit which for most included headcovering.
