The below article provides a good insight into the British Army's 77th Brigade of social media warriors who involve themselves in social media discussions - like this forum for example - to influence minds and, in my view, to distort factual reality in favour of authorised government propaganda machinations.

There is also at least one US Army unit that conducts a very similar role, but I can no longer find the article detailing it.

The question raised in the below article is a relevant one. Why are soldiers engaged in domestic propaganda and influence campaigns?

I will share my personal experience. I have posted on both sides of the aisle.... and no one, not a single person have treated me as badly as American and British trolls when i disagreed with their narrative. It was an eyeopener for sure.

And in view of this experience ^^^ when considering their statement about their existence (below), they have certainly failed in my case ito overseas engagement lol... suppose civilians doesn't matter.... this is fine with me :)

This thread was a bummer. Only one response for what is a very important subject - the military manipulation of social media.

    But:
    Sshhhhh! [IMG]

    And instead:

    :salute:

I'm inclined to say: courage mon amis. But come to think of it, the below evidently seems more appropriate:

Heh, I remember posting about US trolls but I was mocked. USAF with their personna impersonating software was a first usage on mass(millions from ME were 'affected')

Hell, a decade ago I made alot of money by creating e stores on mass, automated, by parsing Amazon API and for each sub category a store was generated with the data.
Like any Amazon affiliate, I relied on sales coming from social media.

I had made a 'community', thousand of fake persons, automated. The only thing that was not automated was the telephone activation: I had thousand of no credit only number SIMs from Orange that did the trick.

These 'persons' would post click bait articles leading to my product pages.

If I did it, almost 8 years ago, a rather unskilled dude, any gov can.

I have long suspected that there are a couple of British members of this forum whose posts are best explained as 'false flag' attempts to discredit the causes they claim to support and the narratives they push. It is certainly the most credible explanation for pushing transparently false conspiracy theories, outright lies and using arguments a ten year old would be ashamed to use. Their relentless apologies for some of the most vile regimes in the world cannot help but condemn such positions.

Of course, it may be that they are actually doing the best they can and genuinely believe what they say, though that seems unlikely.

Well, getting mocked by the same crew on this forum is what alerted me to this situation too.

And then there were a couple of cases that added a great deal more clarity. One member of what I like to call the mil /intel contingent on this forum posted my ISP address and a map of the local village where I lived. I alerted the forum staff who deleted it without my request and who confirmed (in answer to my question) that the poster was not a member of the forum staff and has zero access to the forum admin area.

More recently, another member of the same tribe of rah! rah! Amerika! military group-thinkers made a post that few would've have understood, but basically it was a message to me that he knew my actual identity (and he does). From an earlier complaint about this same member (who had been trolling and insulting a female member of this forum and posting here private photo's from off her social media account), I was told by the forum admin that he was also not a member of the forum staff and also has no access to the forum admin area.

Despite what are quite obvious examples of the very worst behaviour - that would see suspension and even banishment on almost any other forum - both members remain in situ unpunished. Go figure...

Of course the US Army equivalent of the Brit 77th Brigade are active here.

Of course they’re active here along with other countries doing the exact same thing. Is it wanted no, but social media in all its forms is the new battlefield.

So is a presence needed or required to both counter and initiate, sadly it probably is. Hearts and minds is nothing new, just the tools and methods have changed.

The OP was interesting, there was no data or evidence supplied to say it is happening domestically just suppositions. Maybe it is happening but if so it’s happening on both sides, UK and Scottish governments. The danger is only one of them maybe official.

What I do know is that the truth is one of the hardest things to know right now.

With machine learning it’s only going to get harder if not impossible to know. When you can’t tell a fake video from the real thing and pretty much anyone can do it add in the data you can collect about anyone legitimately without having to hack a single thing, it’s going to get scary unless something changes.

I thought this thread was going to be about the BBC UK's true propaganda machine.

That said all media is propaganda it's almost the definition of it.

I just wish they'd get over with it so the economy can stabilise I want free trade and free movement inside the EU as well as access to work for EU citizens here and for me in the EU. I hope that's the deal that gets cut.

I voted to remain if there was a second ref. I would abstain from voting because I consider it an affront to democracy.

I may disagree with the outcome but democracy has spoken.

I think that free movement of people is a deal breaker for most, if not all, of those who strongly support Brexit. I cannot see how any of them would approve any such deal.

Meh, paid Russian troll complains about paid British trolls.
Your credibility, if you ever had any, was destroyed when you posted ridiculous conspiracy theories about the Salisbury nerve gas attack.
I now consider every thing you post as anti-British propaganda.
Go home Ivan your cover has been broken.

It was funny watching his 'go to' source on that completely self destruct when photos of the Russian agents was released. Since then there has been a sudden drop off in posting on that conspiracy - a bit awkward trying to defend the grand conspiracy when photos of Russian agents wandering around Salisbury on the day of the attack turn up.

The great thing about being a conspiracy theorist is that you are never wrong. Just move on to the next conspiracy & pretend you didn't get busted pushing BS....yet again.

I agree to a certain extent. But this is not the first time the 77th Brigade has hit the headlines. I have no doubt that it does operate domestically as we know this happens in the US and Blighty follows the US lead in all manner of things

THis is what in fact I strongly object to: that 77th Brigade directly impacts domestic democracy, which is a bridge too far for me.

The follow on of these 'innovations' is that we now see the British (Conservative) government using tax-payers money in politically biased ways -- in this case to sway British voters against Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour Party:

And then he has the front to complain when no-one wants to discuss his latest attempt to spread propaganda.

In this debate from 5 years ago, nigel garage warned about the EU army and it was ridiculed, labeled a conspiracy theorist.

    One of countless examples.

I think it's stupid to dismiss everything as a conspiracy and also I think it's healthy to distrust any goverment.

I know for sure, 'my gov' lied to me more than SH. If yours did, which I am sure, has it distroyed their credibility and do you dismiss them like you do with the said poster?

Why do you think only Russian and China has troll armies and software but not western countries?

If true, it is and I agree, but generally we should tackle the message not the courier.

Let me call you out on this subject.

Clearly your preference is to engage in schoolyard braying and name calling - not unusual for a whole segment of members here - but can you debate the evidence in a grown up way?

So feel free to present, if you can, hard and incontrovertible facts proving that Russia was responsible for this incident.

I’ll start the ball rolling with this:

Quotes from The Guardian newspaper, Tuesday 3 April 2018 @ 19:52 BST

In other words there is no scientific or factual evidence that the Novichok deployed in Salisbury was manufactured in Russia or used by Russia.

Porton Down's Gary Aitkenhead makes it clear that it has been left to the British government using "information from other sources" - sources thus far unidentified or verifiable as far as we know - that resulted in Theresa May's formulation in Parliament that Russia was responsible because Novichok was a type of nerve agent developed by Russia.

Mercedes Benz is a car developed by Germany. But if one were involved in a hit and run car killing in Bosie, Idaho, would Germany be held responsible? No, of course they wouldn't. It's illogical and in a court of law this argument would be thrown out by a judge.

What this means is that it is left to your personal belief in the reliability and veracity of what Theresa May and other Brit politicians have said about Russia being culpable.

I'm rather longer in the tooth than you, it seems, because in my life I have learned to treat any claims by politicians with a large dose of cynicism.

And the form of wording they chose when making artful statements usually informs one to treat their statements with considerable care.

    See what I mean.
Do not trust this man, he is spreading Russian propaganda and conspiracy theories and trying to make us distrust the information of our own security service and divide us like he trys to divide Americans with election interference.
The Russian nerve gas attack on Britain has already been proven in the relevant threads and I'm not going to give you another chance to spread your lies here as well.

    See what I mean?

Do not trust this man as he can't even offer one single fact to support his argument and instead engages in deflection and name calling and relies on blind faith.

In regard to the relevant threads on the Salisbury and Skripal affairs, since I believe I started most threads on this forum (all apart from one I believe) and saw each through to conclusion (and I don't recall you making any significant post - if indeed you even posted once?) by posting expert opinion and newspaper article after newspaper article highlighting the ever changing and ridiculous narratives of the British government.

What we have with you is someone who admittedly and automatically believes everything the "security services" says - which is ridiculously irresponsible in this day and age. There are children who can do what you can't: think for themselves.

    Now be off with you!
