China sucking Arizona Aquifer dry

China isn't the only country doing this but is a major player and our so called friends the Saudis are also pilfering Arizona and treating it like a third world colony.

"Leaders of a rural Arizona county want help from the governor and other state officials to protect their water supply as companies from the Middle East move to the state to grow alfalfa they intend to ship overseas to feed their cattle.

Companies from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have bought thousands of acres of land in the Arizona desert for large-scale farm operations."

La Paz County leaders are upset about the trend, saying the companies are exploiting Arizona's groundwater law in a time of drought that allows farms to pump as much water as they want. County leaders are worried about the future water supply and believe the companies should pay more in property taxes and fees based on water depletion.

"We just want to make sure the people who have lived here, who have invested in La Paz County will not run out of water," said county Supervisor Holly Irwin.

The farming operations have also brought attention to the quirks of Arizona's 1980s groundwater law. The state's major population areas like Phoenix and Tucson have limits on how much water can be taken from the ground, but rural counties largely are without restrictions."

I stumbled on the situation while considering a winter home in the desert. Just about every town is running low on water and foreign agriculture is a big reason why. **** may hit the fan down there in a few years when the aquifer goes dry.

potable/fresh water will become the next 'gold rush'... the world's aquifers have been sold to private companies/individuals, a tell-tail sign to say the least ...

 

I truly have to wonder what will happen in AZ in the coming decade with water. Seems nearly every town down there is on it's last few feet of Aquifer and that's being depleted fast by these new mega farms that are mostly foreign owned. This could be the next big economic disaster as real estate in an entire state becomes worthless with no water and masses of economic refugees flee the dried up state.

Yet, no one seems to care about millions of gallons of water now used to grow alfalfa, the most wasteful crop that uses irrigation.

Nevada has more critical water issues than Arizona and yet Arizona will be the first state impacted when Lake Mead reaches the trigger level. That water level has been within one foot of the trigger level, including last year. Las Vegas has just completed an expensive expansion of the pipeline into Lake Mead required because the level went down so much that the intake to the city was no longer in the lake. The new water line does not give them more water. It just allows them to pump their allotment from Lake Mead.

Las Vegas has been in court for some time with Ely area ranchers where some water is available. Las Vegas wants to pipe water hundreds of miles to continue growth. They cannot get more water from the Colorado River. Arizona cannot either, The first place that will lose water from the river, as agreed in the current compact, is the state of Arizona.

State water experts warn that every county in Arizona would have to import a new water source to supply any major growth. That includes Maricopa County with the population and financial resources to outbid Mohave County in any fight over water."

@Josephwalker ... same can be said of cali, the 'water regulated' state, yet they squander the resource for grapes, of all things, guess alcohol is more important to them which might explain a few things ... they need to stop complaining that they don't have enough water, yet they 'thieve' it from bordering states that have to over-regulate their own water use just to appease cali... pure insanity aka assininity

In Arizona it's local county officials allowing this and in many ways their hands are tied due to arcane state laws passed long ago that they have no choice but to follow. It's a huge loophole that needs closed.

 

But now it is becoming known that 100% of Californias wines have roundup in them. Big Ag and foot shooting have not seen it so big for a while.

 

fyi, they only tested 10 samples for which all ten tested positive, ergo 100% of the tested wines were positive for glyphosate... please don't conflate that to mean 100% of all cali wines because they weren't all tested afaik...

Not a problem. Canada has as much as 20% ( depending how measured) of the worlds water supply. And not being that aware, they’re not builting a wall to keep us from taking it. Let Arizona do whatever it wants. But we’d better hurry. After all, once a wall goes up, everyone knows, nothing gets through.

Ahhh, yes. Surprise, you fill major storage aquifers, even into existing ground water natural ones that exist now... you don’t pump it to individual states. That becomes a state issue, like it is with California. Don’t forget the wall....that s the big worry. Canada might make us pay fir it,
